This is so haunting. I have the all-too-brief original recording as a bonus track on one of the CDs, and listening to it is just heartbreaking, the way it fades out so early. This is a pretty good edit. I can be merciless about crude, ham-fisted edits, but this is very smooth, and it shows how complex (as ever) their vocal arrangement was. Man, the things the Beach Boys (especially Brian) just left in the vaults!
It's not that smooth, just listen to the added vocal on the 1:52 mark, it really ruins the wonderful flow. I made a better edit without the vocal which makes the song flow much better: ua-cam.com/video/IWcBudfni5M/v-deo.html
I was trying to come up with a word to describe it, and hauntingly is the most apt one there is. I kinda wish someone would use the AI craze to complete this song.
Staggeringly beautiful. If you listen to ten Beatles ballads 1965-9 and listen to Beach Boys ballads 1965-9 it is amazing how superior BB music was. Beatles were better lyricists but songs like this are beyond the reach musically, of most people.
I was about to challenge your statement that the Beatles were better lyricists, until I remembered that you'd specified 1965-69. "Surfer Girl", "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "In My Room", just to name a threesome, have better lyrics, by far, than anything Lennon-McCartney were vomiting in the early '60s. But, yes, I'd agree that the Beatles (mainly Lennon and Harrison) overtook the Beach Boys, lyrically, by '67.
Haunting rendition !! I wonder why some of the lyrics were left out?????? For anyone who has ever lost in love.....this rendition carves you to the core......
It was originally recorded by Dionne Warwick and written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This was recorded (and abandoned) in '68, and Issac's cut came out in '69. But Issac's version may well be the best cover I've ever heard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walk_On_By_(song)
One of, if not the best damn cover that The Beach Boys ever made. Certainly their best outtake in my opinion. Such a beautiful, ethereal cover. Brian’s lead is incredible. His “I break down and cry” line literally sounds like him crying and it just kinda floats over all the swirling harmonies of the chorus. So beautiful
I love Brian's voice. Actually, my favourite period is from 67-73. I know lots of people says his voice got thinner etc. But his timbre was awesome. Like his vocals on Good time! Just love it. And Busy doin nothing. He has such a smooth voice on that one. The way he sounds when he sings "..i write 'em all doooown". And yes.. I've had a few drinks. Cheers 😁
@@Paul-dw2cl yes, they have some great music, but they're from the period when Brian was not contributing as much. I just meant that it's tragic that he couldn't continue at his peak level, but that's a lot to expect from any artist.
Brian and the Boys always had the ability to take someone else's song and make it sound better than the original. Showing that, along with all the abilities they (primarily the three Wilson brothers and Bruce Johnston) had in songwriting, arranging and producing, the Beach Boys were master performers.
Great arrangement. For a split second I thought that was Neil Young singing. Lol. Brian’s voice was so great. Time and age robs artists from hitting those notes as they age but these recordings bare witness for future generations the genius of Brian Wilson.
Same thing for me in the last year or so. I've always been closer to the beatles, and I still love them, but Brian Wilson is blowing my mind. What an utter genius, on par with Bach, Mozart, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Bacharach and of course Lennon/McCartney
this band has somewhat been left out of the conversation when it comes to sixties rock. Everyone talks about the beatles, the rolling stones, the who, the doors…….where's the beach boys? They are by far the best harmonizing group of that time and they experimented just as hard as these other groups.
I had a chip on my shoulder for years regarding your point. Pissed me off ,really. I have heard the Beatles mentioned as a great harmony group. Huh? What? The Beach Boys were the kings, royalty of harmony. 3 part harmony. The Beatles were a great group but not a harmony group like the BB's. I read comments now on youtube of many people who are discovering or re-discovering the music of the BB's. When I read comments by younger people -from teens and older of how they love what they hear and realize that it is far superior to todays slop, it makes me feel good for Brian Wilson. He is finding out that his creations are much appreciated.
Larry, you couldn't have said it any better. The other day I had a debate with my friend on whether or not the beach boys were more talented than the beatles. He said I was utterly dumb for thinking the beach boys were better, so I asked him to name me at least two beach boys albums. Unsurprisingly, he could only think of Pet Sounds. In my opinion, people hold the beatles as the best ever and perhaps they are the best, however, most beatles fanatics do not have a clue about the groundbreaking and untouchable material that Brian Wilson and the boys put out. I hope people will listen to the beach boys before claiming the beatles are the best.
Not really... The other members of the band also composed a lot of great songs. Big Sur, how she boogalooed It, cuddle Up, all this is that, long promised Road... All great songs in which Brian didn't do a thing. And even if pet sounds and smile he had people who wrote the lyrics. So he didn't do all by his own.
God, what a voice Brian had! Man, such pain, such vulnerability. He wasn't afraid to show it. It is like he is crying the song. After hearing this, I listened to Dionne Warwick's Walk On By. What an incredible voice. One of the best ever, but i didn't hear the pain. With Brian it sounds like he is ready to fall apart.
I love the Beach Boys. But no wonder they went away. Nails on a chalkboard: that's an ethereal sound also Moutton Noir. And yes, Gary Esposito... it certainly makes you feel pain.
Interesting rehearsal idea that shows some fascinating potential -- but the original is Burt & Dionne at their undisputed A+ best! Unless Brian has a finished version somewhere in the vaults (which is doubtful) such a comparison is not practical.
Love the Beach Boys and Brian. This is a nice version but it is very hard to match the wonderful music Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick made during that period.
Hauntingly beautiful. Brian has the most gorgeous voice on the planet...and there were 6 who didn't like this, Oh my God, they should check their pulse. 😭

Burt Bacharach was such a gifted songwriter. For a professional singer, it was always a great honor to have him write a sing for them to sing. This hauntingly beautiful version of Bacharachs' "Walk on by" contains all that we who know Brian Wilsons' immense talent love about his music - it is full, melodic surprising, and beautiful. I love this version, and I'm sure Burt did as well.
I think Bach and Beethoven would have been BB fans. I think they would have not only gone to their concerts and bought their albums but have gotten into using "controlled substances" with them on occasion. At least that's what I think. It's just a guess. Only a guess
