- Before the advent of modern matchboxes and lighters, the Liangmai community (Haana/ Hamai/ Tenyimai/ Tenymi) employed a timeless technique to ignite flames. This ancient method, passed down through generations, utilized readily available natural materials. During the Chaga Ngee, the fire making is a significant ritual. The new fire kindled during this festival is considered auspicious and sacred and to be used throughout the year.
Preparation method:
1. A sliced rope, dried in fire, made from bamboo or cane, served as the starter.
2. Setup: A partly split firewood was positioned, with wood dust or shavings inserted between the gap.
3. Ignition: Repeated and rapid pulling of the rope generated friction, causing the wood dust to smolder.
4. Kindling: The smoldering dust was gently picked up and softly blown upon until flames emerged.
Tools Used
• Sliced rope (bamboo or cane)
• Partly split firewood
• Wood dust or shavings
This traditional method showcases the Liangmai community's resourcefulness, ingenuity and harmony with nature, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
