I hate to see neglect. There are a lot of people in this universe who don’t seem to understand maintenance and needing an expense account If you can’t afford upkeep you can’t afford the boat. Keep breathing Q! 😊
What a great deal on this mature lady. It's not a huge interior, but I could see myself living aboard until I can't crawl on deck anymore. I missed any discussion about electronics, so I'm going to assume what's there may need some updating. That is a shame about that engine, there's no telling what damage could be done to the top without tearing it apart sadly, but it does look awesome for it's age. I could see putting this in the water and living aboard for a few years while working on it's cosmetics. A boat like this needs a full time resident so it can be kept after. You may need to spend a little time every day tinkering, cleaning up the bright work, but there's no lawn to mow, no hedges to trim, no gutters to keep clean, so it's not a bad trade off. You definitely would be showing her off in a short time to guests. A deep sigh and a wish for younger days for us all. Thank you Captain Q and Randay for yet another dreamy vision of what could be and the call of the sea.
When all is said and done I'm a wood boat guy .she is a real beauty .and she is almost as old as i am .I wish i was in as good condition as she is .I hope whom ever buys her will show her the love and attention she has been shown thru out her life so far .
Tony & Susan here, you did not give us much of a look at the end of the video. Always good to double check the items that may be questionable for safety .
Some motorboats have pitch adjustment on the prop for planing. Have you have heard of any kind of counterbalanced balast being used? I know sound silly. My happy place is in a Featherlite chestnut or maybe a dinghy that would fit me at this point, but I don't have either anymore. I'm curious to know if a racer cruiser actually planed like the 404 I had as a kid, maybe with a shoal keel and center board would that be hard on the standing rigging etc? Everything on that little boat seemed to hum when I had my brother standing on the side on a close reach before I threw him in the drink. I hope learning to say things correctly from the captain. I'll keep watching.
Beautiful boat. I recently purchased a similar conditioned 1962 John Alden sloop named Orca. My question is how much work, once you have a functioning engine, would this vessel need to get her in the water for a season or two? At that point you can determine exactly what's needed for long term enjoyment.
Lovely old girl you found there Captain and Randay. Needs a good scrub and some paint to get her in the water and then a daily maintenance schedule of cleaning for a few months and you would be the owner of a beautiful boat. Thank you as always. Take care and keep finding these gems.
I'm thinking the same thing. Not going to take much to get her wet for a season. At that point, one can decide exactly what is needed for long-term ownership.
Lovely looking boat. Kind of reminds me of another Hood design, the Bristol 40. I don't think wood is for me, though. Sounds like an intensive maintenance nightmare.
Very pretty boat. As a former wooden boat owner (sold in April 2022) all I can say to a prospective buyer is check VERY thoroughly for deck leaks. Leaks into the interior of the boat will lead to the hull rotting from the inside. The first sign of such rot is usually evident in the exterior paint. So check EVERY deck penetration for leaks (past and present) and the condition of bedding. The peeling paint on the overhead is not a concern since it is most likely due to winter condensation which froze/thawed. That said, inspect every penetration in the cabin top for signs of leaks Another caution is that a double planked hull is VERY expensive to repair and this boat will magnify that effect due to the expensive woods used in the hull. Teak and mahogany hull planking are great when the boat is new, but extremely costly when it comes time to make repairs. On top of that teak, in particular is hard to find. I live in a big boat building area and all teak has to be special ordered and you take what you can get. If I was interested in this boat I would take a screw driver with a plastic handle and tap the entire hull, deck and cabin house every 2-3" with the handle of the screw driver. Sound wood will give a nice sharp clean sounding tap, but bad wood will give a dull thud. Anyplace that doesn't give a sharp clean sound during tapping is a piece of wood that needs to be replaced. I would also open up every place I could inside the boat to inspect the frames. Again tap them with the handle of your screw driver. Do these inspections before going to survey. Finding much bad wood will be a reason not to buy the boat and will save you the cost of going to survey. If you do decide to go ahead, find a surveyor with lots of wooden boat experience and get a thorough survey to identify problem areas. I am not as enamored with the boat's design pedigree as Captain Q. The current condition of the boat is everything.
I think I might have found a new favorite. As always, I’m worried about headroom, but you seemed to have 6’5”, maybe 6’6”, down the middle (based on the Captain Q measuring stick) and seems like a good boat to build skills in. I wish I were back in the States to take advantage of this! Thanks for another great video!
The more of these I watch the more terrifying I find the prices of navigating the world in such a complex thing as a sailboat. I would never begin life in a boat totally dependent on an engine but I can’t imagine learning how to keep all this working together to make way. It looks like a stunning amount of multiprocessing.
That's how I feel when I see someone play a guitar or piano masterfully. Sailing my friend, takes a lot less practice. But it is always the unknown that poses a quandary. If you ever want to learn to sail, get on a small sailboat.
