I actually contacted Bruce Broughton for the lyrics. He said they were simply "nonsense lyrics" with no translations. The actors in the movie were chanting "El Maltemal Tey Han De Brahn Mobbit" over and over. Bruce added the "Rame Tep" and "Etare Homentep, Etare Syristep" for the melody after the shots had already been filmed, which is why the actors aren't seen singing those parts.
It cannot be actual Egyptian, as Egyptians didn't write vowels, and, when two consonants sound "bad" an "e" is put between them, here many other vowels are put between consonants.
Hierglyphics, like most middle eastern abjads (e.g. Hebrew and Arabic) did not include the vowels. But a native speaker of ancient Egyptian wouldn't have put an "e" in between adjacent consonants. Rather, that's what Egyptologists do because the pronunciation is lost. A more concrete example would involve the 2's consonant glyph "PR" (meaning house). You would expect this to sound like "PeR" but in reality it was probably "PaR" ... which is where Pharaoh comes from ("great house"). We know the pronunciation of that one thanks to the story of the exodus.
The Lyrics could have actually made sense. I thought "Homen" (tep) Stands for Mankind, Syris (tep) could be Syria (the Levant) "Ehtar", the leader was Professor Rathe backwards (Etar means beyond). "Ethar rules over Syria, Mankind and the World"
My sister and I used to watch this movie when kids, like 20/22 years ago, and I loved this piece of the OST. I´ve been humming it many times to this day, thank you!
Apologies for someone getting back to you 5 years later... lol.. Bruce Broughton.. the original composer of this chant has stated in interviews that there is no translation because the lyrics are simply gibberish words they invented for the lyrics .. aside from the very obvious "Rame Tep"
Omg!!! Thank you so much! This is my childhood!!! My parents were afraid something's wrong with me because I was singing a piece related to the fanatic murder scene, but the truth is I was just amazed by this masterpiece and its unique style. I always loved this movie and I knew in the future I want to be a part of such things. And today... I am a proffesional actor :) See? If you love something, GO FOR IT! No matter What they say! This film, this soundtrack are very important to me!! Thank you!!
I've been listening to it for the past few hours. I'm starting to worry - I can't stop! :D I'm amazed that on TV they keep repeating the same stuff over and over again + they use one piece of music for absolutely everything when stuff like Waxing Elizabeth is sitting here and no one seems to realize it is just as powerful as some of the other stuff they use. In my opinion even more!! A thousand times! No question! Thanks again for sharing!! It made my day!
How powerful is this song, thank you very much for the upload. It amazes me how much it resembles Carl Orff's "O fortuna"; the notes in the background are the same (although with a slightly different rythm). I always liked to think Bruce Boughton was inspired by it. Also, a funny thought is that Carl Orff published Carmina Burana in 1936, which means, 49 years prior to Waxing Elizabeth, which again, was published with the film in 1985, implying that was released 38 years ago. In a decade, this will be almost the same time distance!
Vitor Camilo I agree. I had not seen your comment before I added mine above. It been a long time since I watch this movie and in my mind they sounded almost exactly the same until I listen to them side-by-side.
The menace of this is incredible. Particularly in the context of the second (near) sacrifice in the film (Elizabeth). This in the background with Holmes emotionally losing it -- 'I don't know what to do.' Off the hook.
Thank you, thank you, thank you Roman. This was a favorite piece of movie music of mine as a kid and I never could get the actual lyrics and/or music in order to enjoy it without watching the actual movie. You've made that possible!
This is a wonderful, wild, passionate, empowering, fetishistic, ritualistic and spiritual tune. It certainly explores all facets of the emotional realms. It is an intense force with a strong, pulsing beat. Sitting alone in this darkened room, it is very quite, as if the walls are holding they're breath and waiting ... It carries me along on its dark waves, and if feels as if I'm crossing a line, going to a dark place where there is no boundaries, where there is no normal. Even as if everything still appears normal, if there's no sun and no moon to be found, that's how I know I'm 'there'. Immediately upon that realization, I focus and go into meditation ... I close my eyes, drink-in the lyrics and beat and 'feelualise' (different to visualise) i.e. feel the music course through me, churning up my chakras, feeling it within me, and sensing it around me, I rise to my feet and dance, letting myself go, losing all my inhibitions; watching my dark silhouette perform as it moves through my body. Feeling it's energy enter my head and churn in my stomach, rush to my heart and float in my head, mixing with my own. Only then, there is no boundaries. There is no limit. Like anything can happen and probably will. I feel my insides expanding but there's also this ... this emptying out right at the very center of my being and I don't want it to stop, ever.
Brilliant piece! The film Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear used to be one of my favourites when I was a kid...and although it's very exciting all the way through this music is definitely the most memorable part of it! Thanks so much for sharing!
That honestly should be Khnum's (the Ram-Headed God) headpiece in SG-1. Khnum was a god like Ptah and Sobek that was never explored and all three were VERY important Egyptian Gods. Then again, SG-1 had shitty costume designs. The original movie was a masterpiece.
Duel of the Fates. Not Spielberg, but close enough. Also has ominous chanting. But Darth Maul would destroy Eh Tar in an instant. Not only is he a far better swordfighter, he has a lightsaber.
As a kid I use to try singing this classic, but since I did knew the lyrics I did a lot of humming to it.Ha-ha,cool thanks for the post.Hit the like for sure...
so they were basically doing all of this out of revenge against the men who were responsible for burning down their village. I'd like to see a movie made out of that backstory! :)
I haved loved this track ever since first seeing the film as a young lad, thankyou for this download as I have always wanted to know the lyrics to the chant, just to let people know the city of Prague philharmonic have actually re done this and its on an assorted film track album called "Apocalypse, cinema choral classics" you can buy this one track alone on amazon for about 80p I think :)
As others have said, the lyrics are essentially nonsense with some things thrown in to make is seem real like a real hymn like the the classic "Tep" and "Ra". Despite that, it is magnificent and sounds very authentic.
Actually, "The Ceremony" is part of the extended soundtrack. "Waxing Elizabeth" is the official version that was released on casette and LP when the move first came out. "The Ceremony" is part of a 2-cd set which was released in 2003 as a limited edition to attendees of a music convention. It is very hard to obtain, and has spawned many low-quality bootlegs on ebay.
Well, I did some research, and if I got it all right, Lovecraft mentions them in some stories as worshippers of the Black Pharaoh, AKA Nyarlatothep (both the cult and the Pharaoh were probably based on real historical figures). The filmmakers probably read about them in one of HPL's stories and thought they'd make cool villains for the movie.
I can't say I've ever come across anything that suggested that. But since creation of the movie wasn't well documented, it could very well be true. Please share if you find out! Now I'm curious :)
È pazzesco, fantastico e travolgente. Il credo nel culto è ciò che può creare una dipendenza mentale, la bellezza dell'Antico Egitto, e la venerazione di Anubis, completano la magia! " Et maltemal" io ci sono.
This was the first scene I saw from this movie as a child. Someone else was watching it, I saw this part, and it terrified me. Revisiting it as an adult showed me that it's actually a masterpiece.
I’m 46 years old and I have finally learned to lyrics to one of the greatest songs of my childhood! Thank you!
I'm past 41, but somehow I couldn't learn the lyrics😁
47 and exactly the same ! T H N X !
STOP SHE’S ALIVE !!!

Eh Tar-e Homentep, Eh Tar Rame.... They are chanting Rathe's name in there at times.
Bruce should have told you this
Always wondered what they were saying. I figured it wasn't supposed to be real.
The Temple of Doom cerimonial theme in Indiana Jones is also very hipnotic.
My sister and I used to watch this movie when kids, like 20/22 years ago, and I loved this piece of the OST.
I´ve been humming it many times to this day, thank you!
Maravilhada pela música,presente raro.Uauuu!Vou compartilhar esse presente.❤❤❤❤😉😉😉
Roman, thanks SOOOO much for that! Brought back my childhood in seconds. 'Got me crying mate! ;-)
Frank S. So glad other people appreciate it as much as I do :)
Love this movie so much , remember when i saw it for the first time , i was a teenager ....
Great job. THis song has been playing in my mind for about 20 years now. Thank you a lot!
Is there any translation for this lyrics?
Apologies for someone getting back to you 5 years later... lol.. Bruce Broughton.. the original composer of this chant has stated in interviews that there is no translation because the lyrics are simply gibberish words they invented for the lyrics .. aside from the very obvious "Rame Tep"
Adoro essa música ela é simplismente perfeita com o filme gostaria de ver com andre rieu
The only part I understood was “Andre Rieu”, and yet I feel I got the gist.
1 people has gone completely tey han de brahn mobbit.
Old is 🏆 gold
Ok! Got the answer reading the previous posts. Sorry. And tons of thanks again!
Thanks for the lyrics - always wondered what the bloody hell they were saying.
Currently trying to join a cult because of this.
Lol.... u got it :)
Don’t do it. For the sake of your mind and your critical thinking skills...do NOT join a high control cult.
Eu acho essa música assustadora.
muito bom
Eh Tar-e Homentep, Eh Tar Rame.... They are chanting Rathe's name in there at times.
whaaa the HELL chant.... LUCYPHERE will appear if U repeat😈
O Enigma Da Pirâmide.
Wonder what it meant in English?
+sha11235 nothing at all. The syllables are just musical notes meant for the human voice. ;)
sadness. well Reme Tep at least was the name of the cult.
! B e S T S o N G e V e R !
I love this song. After many years without watching the movie, I still remembered this song. It reminds me of Carmina Burana.
It's got Carmina Burana all through it. But I too never forgot this tune.
Nunca esqueci. Essa música é muito boa. Queria um remake do filme
Wow! I used to rewind the VHS repeatedly just to hear this! Nice one ☝️
GoldenRatio Girl Me too!! My VHS got so messed up because of it, I had to get a second 🤣
This chant has stayed with me since aged 9 when I saw the film. It was so dramatic and furious. I love it. thank you for uploading.
This song might be the best relic of my childhood, thank you for bringing it back to life
Not the best relic, but it's a damn shiny piece, ain't it? 😁
It’s sound terible!
It's a bit scary, but otherwise quite good. Nominated for an Oscar in 1986
Omg!!! Thank you so much! This is my childhood!!! It's a chant worth shaving your head for
😂😂😂
@@TheDedlilithI don't need to shave it anymore lol 😂😂
@@suspensesmith good, very hygienic.
imagine if this song began to play in Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes.
It would make them better than the POS they are?

dark, gloomy, addictive, hypnotizing
Underrated film
How powerful is this song, thank you very much for the upload.

This music, certainly, was inspired in Carmina Burana. Carl Orff.
My thoughts as well!
Vitor Camilo I agree. I had not seen your comment before I added mine above. It been a long time since I watch this movie and in my mind they sounded almost exactly the same until I listen to them side-by-side.
¿Inspirado? Más bien copiado...
I was looking for that comment
J. Smith For me too
The menace of this is incredible. Particularly in the context of the second (near) sacrifice in the film (Elizabeth). This in the background with Holmes emotionally losing it -- 'I don't know what to do.' Off the hook.
Waxing Elizabeth was the first but of music specifically from a movie that really got to me, so powerful. Incredible work. Thank you Roman.
for anyone that really likes this music and would like something that sounds similar, look up Carmina Burana: O Fortuna
It really sounded like an “o fortuna” ripoff to me :/
Thank you, thank you, thank you Roman. This was a favorite piece of movie music of mine as a kid and I never could get the actual lyrics and/or music in order to enjoy it without watching the actual movie. You've made that possible!
I am so glad to hear that :) It's really nice to know other people enjoy this track as much as I do.
Sgtbigmike 👍
Exactly the same meaning and for me Sgtbigmike:)
such an awesome tune! i sing it real loud at 3am every day!
hahhahaha
One year later but,what?Ha-ha
In your front lawn... in your underwear... while eating from two cans of Easy Cheese...
Creepy at 3am in the morning
A masterpiece...

You high when you wrote this??? 😂😂😂
POWERFUL!! I LOVE IT! This definitely brings out my dark side. ;) Well done!
Brilliant piece! The film Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear used to be one of my favourites when I was a kid...and although it's very exciting all the way through this music is definitely the most memorable part of it! Thanks so much for sharing!
Muito boa essa música 2023 e eu aqui ouvindo.
I was looking for this chant for long time. I watched the movie when I was hardly 15 years, with my family. Its an outstanding performance.
Best recording of Rame Tep on UA-cam, thanks man!
I thought for years they were talking about 'hobbit'. Couldn't figure out how Tolkein played a part in Sherlock Holmes...
What memories ❤️ I'm back of my childhood thanks 🤗
Spielberg always loves this kind of Heretic ceremony/Musical chant like that of Temple of Doom. And I love it too of course!
Duel of the Fates. Not Spielberg, but close enough. Also has ominous chanting.
But Darth Maul would destroy Eh Tar in an instant. Not only is he a far better swordfighter, he has a lightsaber.
Yeah he made two whole movies using it in his decades long career of dozens and dozens of films. He sure loves it.
Just think - somewhere, hiding in that crowd of robed ascetic madmen, there was a full orchestra!
As a kid I use to try singing this classic, but since I did knew the lyrics I did a lot of humming to it.Ha-ha,cool thanks for the post.Hit the like for sure...
Vaya traca de canción, me encanta. Muy chula.
we also recommend temple of doom - the complete extended version (by john williams) indiana jones
Probably heavily inspired by Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana"
so they were basically doing all of this out of revenge against the men who were responsible for burning down their village. I'd like to see a movie made out of that backstory! :)
El mal... Te mal... Tiene sentido.
Tey Han De Mobbit!!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it inspired by HP Lovecraft somehow?
ah.so hard to find the CD for the soundtrack...
This scared the bejesus out of me when I was 8 years old watching it!
It was hypnotic!!
I haved loved this track ever since first seeing the film as a young lad, thankyou for this download as I have always wanted to know the lyrics to the chant, just to let people know the city of Prague philharmonic have actually re done this and its on an assorted film track album called "Apocalypse, cinema choral classics" you can buy this one track alone on amazon for about 80p I think :)
maravilhoso
I'm getting some serious temple of doom vibes right now
Love this song, is was really cool in the 80s.....and the movie is awesone too..
J'adore ce son, c'est un de mes films préférés ! 😍
Super wielkoduszny utwór, istna majestyka!!!
As others have said, the lyrics are essentially nonsense with some things thrown in to make is seem real like a real hymn like the the classic "Tep" and "Ra". Despite that, it is magnificent and sounds very authentic.
Scary. Egyptian stuff. Good movie though. Except Elizabeth dying.
One-Word: Epic!

145,666 views. 145 views. Coincidence?!
I've been singing this wrong my entire life.
No, it was called "Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear." Fear, not Doom.
It's interesting, that the actor who played Professor Rathe (Ehtar) played Sherlock Holmes himself a few years later.
A few years earlier you mean
I LOVE this song...if you guys know any similar ones lemme know. Thanks.
