Alright, Jared, I dug my copy of X-Men out from storage purgatory, and the poster measures about 17" x 20.5" folded into quarters in both directions. It's the art from the cover surrounded by a black border, the Genesis logo is slightly proportionally larger as it appears on the box, the 3D text X-MEN™ logo that's red with purple sides on the bottom, a Marvel Comics logo in the upper left corner, and it actually says "SPECIAL EDITION POSTER" in a green splody bubble in the lower right corner.
EDIT: Oh, and on the back, there's maps of levels 3-6 with numbers corresponding to some text boxes that seem like they're supposed to be tips, but they seem more like basic observations like any captioned image from a magazine at that time, such as, "Be careful of these columns of flame - they take substantial health points and knock you back as well."

right? it did not stick rigidly to usual game tropes. wolverine's claws still worked with the power meter depleted because they (at the time) weren't a mutant power, that's really just his sanity meter and he goes apeshit feral once it runs out... and nightcrawler being included at all, but especially being able to cheese through walls. awesome.

I had discovered the X-Men reset trick by accident. I had gotten to that point, wasn't sure what to do, and thought I might have missed something earlier on. I hit restart to start over again and voila, I passed the level...lol
Nightcrawler was most definitely OP in that game as he could literally teleport through through most of three of the levels (Shi'ar Empire, Light House, Astroid M). I also remember Wolverine being able to 'heal' a second player on top of just himself if they stood next to each other. Also, on the hardest level, falling off a cliff meant instant death for your character; even with Jean trying to save you.
I honestly never found the game that hard, but I did play it a ton due to owning it.

@@scotshabalam2432 Interesting. First of those consoles we had was the N64 (eventually got both a PlayStation and Saturn, but those came near or after the end of their lifespan), and I can attest to it not having the best games. I think the N64 is the only console I ever had growing up in which I played more games on it I didn't really like that much, than those I did. Still, I managed to find the occasional gem, so overall had a lot of fun with it.
As for the Nomad, that makes sense. I'd never even heard of it until years later, and owned one for a short while. I eventually unloaded it though, because I found that I didn't really have enough use for a portable Genesis, when I already had my GBA or DS for handheld purposes.

I remember renting the X-Men game for Sega Genesis and I didn't understand why I couldn't make any progress. Then I realised you can change characters at will to avoid certain hazards with a proper character or even summon other mutants to defeat bosses or cleaning up the stage. I was very young and needless to say never ever got farther beyond the two first levers, so I never encountered the glitch that needed you to reset the game (although it was described in the videogame magazines of that time).
If I remember correctly also the stage select cheat code was kind of convoluted and weird to make it work.
I've only knew the characters from the Konami Arcade machine as the 90s Animated Series was not aired at that time in my country, nor the comic books were licensed here either. But Nightcrawler is my favorite mutant, from knowing him in those games and from watching him in a couple of episodes of the Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends cartoon series. Funny enough, his name was translated as ORUGA ("Caterpillar" in spanish, maybe to refer as the "crawler" part of the name) and later as NOCTÁMBULO ("Noctambulant" or "Night Owl" in spanish), and NOCTURNO ("Nocturne" in spanish) in the following 90s cartoons, probably to avoid the "bug" meaning that doesn't make sense in spanish, not for his appearance nor his mutant powers (except the way he can climb on walls). Being able to play as Nightcrawler always was a plus in my books, even if this game was not as great as the Arcade Game; nor the Genesis sequel, X-Men 2 Clone Wars.
    Awesome videos as always.

X-Men was the only reason this longtime, dedicated Nintendo fan finally bought a Sega Genesis. I was a huge fan of the comics and cartoon so after I got my first paycheck at a new job, I bought myself a Sega Genesis with Sonic 2 set. I later picked up the first Sonic the Hedgehog used and a friend gave me their copy of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker and that was all I ever got for my Genesis. I played X-Men a lot but it was very hard and I never finished it. I still played way more Supernintendo and Gameboy.
Pretty sure that pack in poster was just a mini poster of the box cover art.

I remember the *Equinox* ad... one of those that was seared in my head while I contemplated my future as a young gamer.....
    - Played first game of Equinox
    - After years of practice, still trying to conquer the third dungeon.
    - Had to skip graduation ceremony, but finally conquered the third dungeon.
    - Still living at home, no job, no friends, never kissed a girl, but finally defeated the green blobs in the fifth dungeon.
    - Having trouble seeing the screen, and need to take naps between dungeons, but you can now get to the sixth dungeon with ease.
    - Can't see the screen, can't hear the sound effects, can't work the joystick and having chest pains at the thought of the evil empress. Feeling the end is near, you vow to someday complete your quest as you bequeath your joystick to your grandson.
    - Had to miss your grandfather's funeral, but you finally conquered the evil empress. He would have wanted it that way.

This was my favorite childhood game, by far. I discovered the reset trick differently than most. Instead of getting frustrated and hitting the button, I encountered a panic-filled brain fart when I reached the end of Mojoworld for the first time. I let the timer count down until it said “Reset the computer now!” And in a flash of inspiration, I hit the reset button, and proceeded to Asteroid M.

I could be wrong on some details, but regarding the fmv situation on the Sega CD, I want to say it was a combination of a couple of critical factors. (1) the single speed CD-ROM of the add-on and (2) the severe bottleneck of the system expansion interface that the Genesis had for connecting to the Sega CD.
Video CDs were already bandwidth hungry, so the slow read speed of the optical drive plus the limited bandwidth to the overseer genesis that would eventually process the resulting video forced the decision to be either full motion, or full screen. Not both.
Early ps1 games still _letterboxed_ things, but the double speed of the drive it comes with and just less constraints meant it didn't take long for games on the ps1 to have enough video to fit a TV episode or two of a show, provided there was enough disk space for the endeavor.

I actually grew up with that X-Men game and I never played it because it was a chore just getting to stage 2. Even then, I only got to stage 3 like, twice in my entire childhood. If I'd actually made it to the point where you needed to reset the console, I might have actually smashed my copy in rage. at not knowing why the game wasn't working anymore. I think the Shi'ar empire theme was pretty banging though.
