- The JBL Charge 5 portable bluetooth speaker was just announced in 2021 but it's predecessor still has plenty of power. In fact, the main driver is fed with the same 30 watts as the new JBL Charge 5, which also has a separate 10 watt channel powering it's newly added high frequency driver.
Since we're all curious to see what's underneath, this video shows how to disassemble / remove the speaker's cover or grill to expose the new driver design. There's also a short bass test in the second part that shows really nice driver excursion. The speaker has it's DSP disabled / low frequency mode. The new JBL Charge 4 is part of JBL's 2018 lineup which consists of JBL Go 2, JBL Clip 3, JBL Xtreme 2 and JBL PartyBox.

It's kinda pointless having 2 small drivers in stereo since you wont get true stereo sound since they're close together so it's better off using a larger driver with more area to get better sound overall, maybe they could've added a tweeter to give it more range i guess

But here's the thing, it's bigger than the 3rd one, so you expect it to be louder, but sadly no. If they decided to go with one driver, it should at least have been smaller, but that will be disappointing also, but not like now. They could have least made it a 360 degree sound speaker or yes like you said, added a tweeter. Looks like I will be skipping this one.
@@fidelity5406 please shut he hell up, he charge four is f*cking amazing, don't say crap about it, it's good the way it is and I dont think it needs any more. That would only lead to a price difference, it is louder btw, and has more thunderous bass eith the larger passive radiators.

BigEarl 2000 I take sound quality over volume and charge 4 beats the 3 at that. I have two charge 3s so I just use the 4 as a sub with those in stereo and it does a much better job with bass than either if the charges did

im perplexed... i got my charge 4 at target so i know its real yet it has no screws holding it in place and no place even for screws
yeah that's because for some reason JBL decided it's alright to have two different models on the market.. weird
There shouldn't be any differences in sound and power but the speaker's drivers are not identical, on one seems like a paper cone and the other has some sort of coating over it. But both should be as equally waterproof. You might feel it's not as powerful as you thought because in many videos (this included) people use the speaker with it's DSP disabled which disables the bass filters and allows frequencies under 50hz to be passed to the driver. It won't make it sound better but you get a lot more excursion thus making you think its more powerful.

@ no but the GG model (the one shown in this video) has screws but the TL model doesnt, GG also has an orange gasket but TL has a gasket but its black and looks a bid different. also the driver of GG is more waterproofed than TL, i think they use different coats on the two. GG has the surround glued on the front of the cone but TL has its surround on the underside of the cone. also GG has wires soldered onto the terminals but TL has spade connectors.
The way to tell what model you have is look at the bottem of the box, you will see a serial code. if the two first letters start wit "TL" you have got the TL model. if the first letters are "GG" than you have the GG model.
also lots of people spread rumours like GG has a polly cone but TL has paper but they bother have papper.

Yes of course, even without the cover it's waterproof.

I bought the charge 4 but decided to return it for the charge 3. Didn't get as loud and the asymmetric design really bugged me for some reason.

@@phoenixyt124 no its slightly louder because 1 it's one driver instead of two so it's being pushed harder 2 its 30w, maybe charge 3 has 30w but just remember if you are sending 15 watts to each driver it's not as loud, but instead sending 30 watts to one speaker will be louder, but it depends on the power rating of the driver itself. In this case charge 4 is louder

If you don't have screws then it means it's only held by clips so gently pry it off, it will be fine. UA-camr Techder Audios has a video on how to do it, give it a search.

@Koen 145 not sure which one sounds better because I haven't compared both, but this one GG seems to have a coating on the driver that might make it more durable if you plan to use it in wet scenarios.

It really depends on the track and how long you play it, the speaker was not designed to receive that much low frequency so I don't recommend it
