Belgium: Is Tintin racist? | European Journal

- Tintin is a national hero in Belgium, but he is about to have to answer to charges of racism, colonialism and arrogance. A Congolese man living in Belgium has filed suit, and wants the edition about Tintin's adventures in the Congo banned. The book, first published in 1931, is indeed full of racist clichés. Tintin's creator Hergé distanced himself from it in his later years. The controversial parts have been removed from more recent printings but you can still find them in collectors'editions. Tintin's defenders say the comic books do not contain anything more offensive that what you would find in most literature, and you cannot ban everything. The controversy stems from the fact that the Congolese people were treated brutally by their Belgian colonial rulers. It is still a very sensitive issue in Belgium.
It’s racist but it shouldn’t be banned.
YASSS🖤😩we need to have proof
ban the cogolese instead
@@icekng456 now that's racist!
I agree. I don't agree with banning books
There is a lot of historical context behind all this. It may had been racist but in later comics you can see that Tintin changes due to influential aspects in Herge's life. I personally don't feel offended by any of the portrayal about the Native American culture because it's not harming me in any psychology or physically matter. And once again the comics were influenced by how the times were back then.
hergé was not a racist man, if you do any kind of reading into his life you'd understand how pressured he was into writing these themes in and how afterwards he tried so hard to change it all as he disagreed with it. the first three comics have all been all but disowned by hergé as they don't reflect his own personal views. there is no victory in erasing the past.
Given the fact that the DRC was a colony of Belgium not too long ago, I can see how some portrayals of Congolese people in Belgium can be seen as problematic.
If you're going to share a peice of literature don't censor it... either completly ban it or show it
No need to ban anything, add a foreword that puts the book in its historical context.
really #racist? like Mein Kampf? shouldn't it be read publicly with explanatory notes?
we should know the mind of the racists, we should be exposed to it, but at the same time for one moment we shouldn't be tempted to pursue it!
fucko!
im sick of such puritanism... TT is a comic character with every right to be whatsoever!
Its unlike Tin Tin to be a racist in any way. In other books like 'Prisoners of the Sun' and 'Tin Tin in Tibet', he has friends from different races. I can see how this may offend some readers though.
"you cant be racist when you have friends from other races" 🤡
It was never the perpose of Herge! He just wanted to make nice comics!
i love herge, but maybe thats not true
@@encyclopediaofvideoseov.2902 nah it is true
@@weirdflex8158 probably yes
In Herge's defense, racism was considered normal and acceptable behavior back at his time
perhaps Herge would have acted like his character TinTin?!
A lot of this is historical and I don't think it should be banned.
I think there was little to no racism in the comic back when it was published for the first time (i mean in comparison with racism of its time)
just because it passed the checks back then, it doesn't mean that the filters don't improve with time! it was racist AF, it's TinTin who should have been put to work!
fucko!
Three years later i do agree
@@electromaniac03 🙃
@@icekng456 maybe you're right, maybe Congolese were too lazy to kill whites when they were enslaaving them. Here we agree, even if the price is your own life one shouldn't be too lazy to kill their oppressors
@@electromaniac03 here's to 5 years later
Why are white people so defensive of their racism? Tintin is legendary, great work by a great artists. But some of the shit in it is racist, just accept that, that's the problem, y'all just want to keep throwing blame and bringing up irrelevant shit. Just accept it, own up to it, and we can move on without having to alter the original works.
Its not racist, it was not only a thing of the time but also made to describe the world we live in. That's like saying we should ban roald Dahl became of his anti-Semitic beliefs.
Comedyteamz
I agree. It is clearly racist. Those who claim it is not are in denial.
Hey don't generalise us like that. I think tintin is very racist.
Tintin is 70 years old,it was normal back then
as person who actually experienced REAL racism .i find this guy offensive. The man is clearly behaving like a profession victim .When will people learn your race is not a disability.
That's terrible, people shouldn't bully you for being green.
It’s offensive, but shouldn’t be baned. It should be a learning experience with the disclaimer that it Imperialist views against the Congolese people were pervasive and even in children’s books.
I read the original black and white version . I expected it to be highly rascist, but it wasn't that racist. it did have some stereotypes, but it actually had more animal abuse than racism. The story wasn't that good, but it did have some amusing moments.
Ridiculous.
Tintin is not racist. Herge isn't racist either. Herge was just being one of those typical stereotypical artist back in the 30s that never did his research. But The Blue Lotus changes all that.
I think Tintin and Herge were racist, but pretty much every person in the racial majority of an imperial nation would have been racist, because otherwise there would be too much moral outrage for the country to invade and subjugate people in far away places, stopping the nation from being an empire.
Racism was pretty open in the past and it is only logical that racism would still exist for a time after it was deemed socially unacceptable.
From Japan. I agree with you. "Blue Lotus" surely criticizes Japanese Imperialism. And Tintin's friend is Chinese not Whites.
If we Japanese deny "Blue Lotus", it means admiring Japanese Imperialism and accelerates turning far rightest.
It's no more racist than the blackface/mammy imagery once prevalent in cartoons at the time. Hergé came to regret what he did with the Congo album and was actually quite progressive for his time. As they say, the racist imagery isn't something to be imitated by everyone, but to excise it from existing literature would be to shove things under the rug which is far more insulting than actually standing up for the marginalised.
I think they should just carry a warning so people can be educated. There is no need for censorship. It becomes too subjective.
Of course it’s a collector’s edition - not a book for kids
Don´t ban the history because some people doesn´t like it (mostly minorities or/and lefties without humorous sense) History is the best teacher we have!
Hopefully there is no cancel culture thing against Tintin, nor any series of comics created by Herge.
first he liked the books, then he came from Africa to Europe and it's racist!? Pethatic.
Getting upset about a 90 year book. Probably he was too often refused an apartment (as he mentioned).
haha someone didnt wanna live with him so he wants tintin banned
@Teranex I never said Disney or Anime don't have racism, all I said is the cartoons in Europe can't compare to Anime or Disney.
YOU ARE BEING RACIST BY DISCRIMINATING TINTIN!
You're telling the truth.
Why Belgium is so famous as a Racism Country?
Someone can explain?
I thought the people are educated ....or not?
LOL form their own image of Congo, hahaha
The "Democratic" republic of Congo
3:09 Yes, this man speaks the truth.
He seems to really enjoy carrying that book around. He must be using it as his race card.
A Congolese chap wants this book to be banned, so why he was roaming around with this book?
I have the book but find the non-white stereotypes and Tintin's treatment of African wildlife hard to stomach. It's both repugnant and silly at the same time. The only part I like is the parrot scene at the beginning of the story. Unlike The Seven Crystal Balls saga or Flight 714, it is not a Tintin I would read over and over.
Still, it was very early days for Tintin back then, and times were not very enlightened either. Nor was Herge at the time, and the limited and biased source material he had to work with didn't help. Moreover, Herge didn't produce Congo by choice (he wanted to send Tintin to the US). He was pushed into it by the editor, who wanted to encourage colonial and missionary readership and promote the Belgian Congolese administration. Maybe we could cut Tintin some slack for his early embarrassments? He made a vast improvement, becoming anti-racism and speaking out against racism.
In fact, Hergé probably wanted Tintin and Al Capone to face each other. So he made Tintin to go to the Congo, bust Capone's diamond smuggling gang and arrest his henchmen. And then to catch Capone himself and eliminate the crimes of other gangsters, he made Tintin to go to America. But sadly Capone, a Mexican bandit named Pedro Ramirez who blamed Tintin and another unnamed gangster who almost at the end of 'Tintin in America' threw Tintin and Snowy into lake Michigan, were never caught.
"hard to stomach. It's both repugnant and silly" so, like colonization really ?
If you ban it, you will make it more sought after.
People know it’s ridiculous.
It’s a part of literature history.
And not one to be forgotten.
It’s a lesson.
2:06 so was very other country under colonial rule. This case is only infamous because king Leopold II owned it, not the state. Gone honest the Congo was not a special case.
I suppose the king followed the principles of human dignity enshrined in the Belgian laws back then! No he didn't. He treated people in Congo like animals and the Belgian people did nothing. The Belgians should have acted against the king as if he was doing all those terrible things to them, but they did nothing. #Racists!
What he was sayin it true I I live in Belgium I am not black but white but from another country , they never wanna give THE appartement or à job they always find Some Reason to say No . Belgum is à very racist place
@Teranex I didn't say that none of the Disney or Amine cartoon didn't have racism. I was implying that those cartoons are better drawn then Belgium when I said, nothing can compare with Anime or Disney cartoons. I didn't mean how it sounded, sorry!
The content of tin tin in this case. Is wrong. For example, they wouldn't do this as this is distasteful. The context tin tin ordering the Congolese to get to work is wrong. That is wrong as that story shouldn't be created in the context of entertainment.
In the context of story telling of the past it's OK to show what has happened. But tin tin adventures which is telling the story of his current adventure implies it happening now and it's OK to command black people as slaves to go to work. It's very distasteful and bring acceptance of what happened as if it normal and OK to be ruled and control by Belgium.
Its not. For example when they mentioned the train scene the moral is that every man and woman ,of any race, should help. And when Hinton is carried around by the people it symbolizes colonialism but mostly the fact technologyand controls who is in charge. Plus the neckline rightfully own the Congo and technically still rule it as it was never officially taken from king Leopold II so the government have no right to trade it.
Good Comic 👍
They should ban this book not the entire franchise if they think it will negatively impact the children's imagination as bout Congo.
Banning things only causes more ignorance
I loved Tintin as a kid in the mid 90s, especially that one book where they steal a tank.
I don't remember ever reading the Congo book. My local library probably didn't have it due to the contents. How could the creator not realized how racist his drawings were? Was he a closet nazi?
Alica Ljungberg You have to realise, Herge was simply misinformed. Back in the 1930's there was very little information about black people and can you blame him for that? The image that black people are portrayed throughout this book is what everyone did, seriously. Pure black skin and puffy pink lips.
Besides, he has said that he wasn't intending to be racist, and doesn't have anything against black people, or anyone else.
@Alica Ljunberg You mind your language! You neither can blame nor insult Hergé for this. If you don't want to read Congo, then don't waste your time reading other Tintin comics if you find them racist, but I haven't found even a single racism in this book.
As if Belgium is the only colonial country.....
I has crush on tintin ❤❤❤
Haha how about South park
Simply put yes. Tintin was racist, he grew up in a time period where it was acceptable, his country Belgium enslaved the Congolese and in Tintin in the Congo he displays a patronising attitude towards the natives.
The early Tintin stories did have racist elements. Congo is the worst offender, but you also see it in Soviets, such as the stereotyped Chinese guys the Soviets bring in to torture Tintin. But to his credit, Tintin becomes anti-racist and raises cudgels against racists, such as the men who bully Zorrino in Prisoners of the Sun and the racist who attacks a rickshaw man in The Blue Lotus. Considering that he was growing up in a period where racism was par for the course, this was ahead of its time.
The only one thing I declare is that Tintin is not a racist character.
Tintin changed as the books went on. In herge's earlier works the racism (especially in the congo book) was pretty evident. It seems like the changes that were happening in herge's life therefore changed tintin's as well in the books.
You are right
ridiculous!
What do you mean?
Tin tin based
Nice username...
The whole lawsuit is frivolus and should never make it through court. This is about one man's poor self-image and attempt to gain vengence for a percieved wrong that does not affect him personally. That, or it's a shameless grab for attention.
And while colonialism is a touchy subject, but nearly every former European colony enjoyed a higher standard of living back then than they do now.
"nearly every former European colony enjoyed a higher standard of living back then than they do now"
tell that to the people who died of starvation in bengal, the slave miners in south africa, or the people whose arms and legs king leopold cut off
Lmao, this is typical stuff in the U.S., subtle racism is everywhere here. And not just blacks. Let me give you a heads up brother, it aint worth whining about it. Gonna force people to stop being racist even if they were? Adapt and move on. ; D
If he has an issue with the book, move somewhere ( like the Congo ) where the comic wouldn't be able to be found

Exactly
This is so funny but sounds very evil!
This is why everyone should live in their own countries.
If belgium will give back money from africa yes they will go them own country back.

I don't see you telling this to the colonisers
Congo was a victim of the King not the state.
it would be like if all of a sudden india, canada, australia, new zealand, anglo caribbean etc all belonged to queen victoria and she alone ruled the nation, that would be the same situtaion.
PLUS the fact that he lives in Belgum shows that he benefited
you know nothing about belgian congo. the belgians wasn't better than the king
Yes its sorta racist but no offence one immagrant should not be allowed to change a book that's been there for a while because he don't like maby more agree with but still.
This doesn't surprise me that Western Europe still have strong examples of Racism! I feel for the black people and most other people would agree that saying this isn't really racist that they are blinded by a simple cartoon (nothing can compare with Anime or Disney cartoons, sorry)!
Of course it's racist; it was written by a white, Catholic Belgian in what?--1929 or 1930. But why ban it? You'll just make it a collector's item.
I'm a massive Tintin fan but found the book hard to look at, so I stopped looking.

haahaaaaa ohh
If back then it was wrong to do that, it would of never existed.
Are you a fan of the Arabian slavers who sold slaves to the West and East for many centuries in Africa?? they made more atrocities then you could think of .
To bad it doesnt say on your channel wich country you are from , but im sure wichever it is i can give some facts like that from your country's history.
I am not a fan of the methods used by Belgium during its colonial times , the fact is that Congo still uses technology and infrastructure build by Belgians .
i am arabian...but maybe your right...maybe
black people have problem in is work God with us 😥😥😥
If you don't like it, don't read it, and stay OUT of Belgium.
Better yet, make your own comics.
I thought africa was full of kings and queens....Hahahahahahahaha!
I agree it's good that its banned
By the way, you shouldn't reply to a comment that was posted a year ago.:)
Yes I see what you're saying, it was made 80 years ago. But I wasn't whining, I was was just acknowledging the fact that many modern blacks are offended by this. And although things like this should be forgotten, it obviously isn't, so why not just ban this book so that people won't care to complain about this book? And are you sure you don't see any racist elements in this book at all?
If you don't mind me asking, but what do you mean "there was more animals getting killed than racism"?
Sorry I was gone for a while lol. But I see what you mean. It's still being published but in my honest opinion, it shouldn't. But again this is my opinion and mine only as I see others have different opinions.
