Correct, Michael was a Green Beret in the Vietnam War, and does have an extensive background in martial arts as was mentioned in the pilot episode "Knight Of The Phoenix". The guy he fights before he investigates Mac Gifford is a Ninja, so it fits that he would prove to be a harder opponent for Michael than most of the typical thugs and criminals he usually encounters.
Everything seems to be retconned in the pilot or sloppy writing after S1

Still must've been a tricky sequence to shoot though, making sure they didn't stab the Hoff in the back of the head. Wouldn't be surprised if the sweat on his forehead was real rather than sweat makeup.

If Michael hadn't of dodged that last knife then that would of been a short episode and probably the end of the show unless they recast someone else as Michael Knight.

If you remember the pilot episode, Michael has a metal plate in his forehead from military surgery in Vietnam. So that knife would've conveniently bounced off, which would've been amusing.. lol! 🤣
@@AchtungBaby77 His upgrade could've been to his skin replaced with KITT's molecular armour - then we'd get to see bullets and explosives deflect off his face not to mention lock-picks becoming twisted when bumbling thieves try to gain entry to his mouth!
