I Can remember when my mum and sister came home from the shops with these new fangled plastic bags.
I remember saying that they will end up being a huge problem & stick to the ole brown paper bags ,
But remember how we thought that we were saving the trees back then .
    early 1970s.

Here in Australia. 1950s to 1990 ish the heavier gauged steel drums were for Super Petrol. the lighter gauge was diesel.
Petrol was $6 for 44 gals, and diesel was $3 a 44 gal drum .
We got 4 of each every month for the tractors and trucks/cars.
One day dad was cutting the top off a petrol drum and the lid fell and cut the top of his foot badly
Lucky that a nurse friend came up to buy some flowers at the right time and patched his foot up.
We used the old drums for a chemical spray unit , on the tractor with a pump attached

We spent Thanksgiving much like you and your family did, together. I’m 70 now and enjoy these times so much. You and your wife are a great team providing Godly examples of respect, love and support. Watching the youngest two help mom carry firewood reminded me of my own formative years. Cedar and Heath,
I watched this episode with much admiration as your older Kids came home for Thanksgiving; amind the hustle, bustle and mountains of good food was a loving, coheasive family who in their own way quite accurately reflect the best of the parents and ancestors who raised them.
Cedar, your adult daughters must be very accurate reflections of who you were as a young lady; wholesome, self-assured grounded people who silently affirm what you taught and daily demonstrated to them; you both most be very proud. Your older son also reflects your family's qualities that simple can't be mustered up for the cámara. All the best to you and yours as you savor the holiday season.

Burn barrels tend to Rust from the Inside out. Cause people do not cover them up when not in use. So Rain water goes inside and ends up rusting the bottom out and some of the sides.
So Might be worth either covering it up when not in use. Or perhaps even Building a Cover semi roof over it. Something like scrap metal roof that could at least keep the water from getting inside the barrel.
    Yes Oil Barrels are thicker.
But Crude Oil Barrels are even Thicker. where they can be Inch to 3 inches thick Depending on which Maker and oil company they come from.

You're right about plastics not being recycled much. There is no way to sort PP, PE, PPE, PET, etc., to make new plastics. They could be pelletized and used in road construction like glass. Cellophane is an interesting one to ask your local recycling office about: it's biodegradable but not recyclable. So do you throw it in with food waste?

My burn barrel is a Behrens galvanized steel trash can with a ring of 0.5" holes near the bottom, the bottom has a 1" layer of cast in place refractory to protect the thin steel from the intense heat and a 3/8" thick steel grate a few inches off the bottom for good air flow. I just added 10 feet of 4" stove pipe to the center of the lid and the huge draft makes this thing roar. The cross-sectional area of the stove pipe is 4X the area of all the 0.5" holes so there is tons of high speed, turbulent air being sucked under the fire. I use hardwood get a decent burn, but I am picking up two bags of anthracite coal tomorrow. I will get a hot bed of wood coals and then add the anthracite to the hot coals to light it off and I should get an all day burn. Coal requires a draft either forced or by having a long stack so I think this will give me a damn fine burn

Incinerators work far better when you have an outer cylinder of steel to heat the air and feed it back into an upper smoke chamber, this secondary combustion process removes much of the smoke. Hopefully people will do some research before copying this old design because it doesn't work very well.
Those venturi vent cuts are sort of the right idea, but you need a raised floor for them to work properly, otherwise ash just clogs them up.
Using a couple of stainless washing tubs welded into a tall column is another idea as there are holes already made, but again you need an outer skin to direct the preheated air to the upper chamber

    • @bobbob-jy5li

yep, the dual skin designs are way better, this is just his old burn barrel with a chimney? It's odd he's done it like this because I think his shop heater is kind of a secondary combustion type? I guess he has to call it "ultimate" so people will click on the video, but there are better ways of doing this

The next time you want to weld or cut a flammable tank you can run a pipe/ hose from your truck exhaust into the tank and let the exhaust run for some time to get rid of the oxygen need for a flame.
I braised a gas tank in that manner and in still here lol.
    3 things needed for a fire, fuel/ignition/oxygen this eliminates 1 .

You could use a mix of perlite and portland cement to line the barrel and that will make it last about forever. Put just enough portland into the perlite to make it turn gray all over and mix it almost dry so you can putty it into the barrel at about two or three inches thick. I've used this mix on several projects. Not good for something like a blacksmith forge but should be great for a burn barrel.

    • @honthirty_

Except Perlite & Portland cement is hydroscopic, and very alkali. The barrel sits outside in the weather. Lining it would accerate the metal barrel, rusting away.

If you make your chimney taller, the heat rising out of the pipe will form a better vacuum i the bottom. The taller the pipe/ the more time the heat has to rise in the pipe/ the more that heat and smoke will accelerate/ which causes it to pull in more air into the bottom. Add a chimney- at least 4ft or so. (plus it gets the smoke above your head and is more pleasant to be around).

  • @Monsheri03

    No judgement, but FYI:
Burning plastics can be especially problematic, with PVC plastic in particular contributing to high emissions of dioxin. Dioxin is a persistent, bioaccumulative toxin which means it isn't broken down into safer chemicals, and it is concentrated in the food chain. As dioxin in burn barrel smoke drifts away to eventually settle on nearby fields, it can be eaten by animals where it is concentrated in their fat. Some is then excreted with the milk while the rest remains in the animal's fat. When humans consume dairy products and meat they end up with the long-lived dioxin in their own bodies. The US EPA now considers burn barrels a major source of dioxin. They also consider that current dioxin levels in Americans, due to consumption of dairy and meat, are high enough to add a significant cancer risk, as well as other serious health risks.

@@bonniemoritz4199 Please do not misunderstand. I think my sons are fine men. I am the one who failed them, not them me.
They were raised not to see color and to always reach out a helping hand. They were taught that there is nothing they can't build or make. If they want it badly enough. Both are honestly brilliant.
Also, there is not a day that goes by that I do not pray that God will send His angel to watch over them and keep them safe. I pray for them to be healthy and happy, kind and compassionate, decent and moral. I pray they always have a roof over their heads and food to eat and thay will build a strong bond of friendship and brotherhood between themselves because this old world is a tough row to hoe alone.
As for me I do a little project at Christmas called Christmas Magic. I get gift bags together for Vets, elderly and shut-ins with no one to remember them at Christmas.
This year there will be 120 bags and the bags are filled with really nice things.
That doesn't sound like many, but I am an old gal and I have to do it all from my home on the phone. I get the Scouts to deliver the bags.
That it all comes together each year is truly magical and every year I am as excited and as happy as a kid getting a new bike the day all those gaily decorated bags go out.
That is my Christmas gift each year and it is a truly wonderful one.
I wish you and yours a truly wonderful Christmas filled with love and laughter and a heavy dose of Christmas Magic.

@@Ducelick Thanks for your reply. Your yearly Christmas project sounds wonderful and I'm sure it is magical to those who receive one of your bags. We all need to show a little kindness to others in need. Thanks for doing your share. Merry Christmas!

Maybe use a dirt hole with the same tubes and a lid if you can later to see if it works then it stays clean outside

15:00 Tell Heath, instead of using a sanding disk on his grinder, use a poly disc. Its like going from dial up to 500 internets speed 🤣and tell him not to be a hero and put a guard when using the 1mm cutting disc, makes me gringe every time.

Could sure use one of those right now lol. Here in the UK if you can get one, we use old used oil drums with holes in the sides.

This is Heath in a nutshell.
    100% heart
    100% family
    100% hard work
about 65% in the homework department. I'm sure that it is good to have the improvement as it is.
I am a little surprised to see you go with the "ultimate" UA-cam buzz words lately. Seems a little different than your typical style. These are positive words coming from a good place. Don't let the text on UA-cam be negative. Best of luck. Looks like a very special holiday.

Growing up in rural PA in the 50's and 60's, we burned our trash in a wire basket. This really took me back in time.🙂

Excellent content, Heath and Crew! Remarkably presented, too! The only thing missing from your splendid Fall Festivities would be the outdoor/indoor temperatures! That made it a horrible experience that left me wanting! You ruined my moment!!!🤣 J/K 🤣 Thanks, most enjoyable!

Growing up south of Denver in the 60s every house had an incinerator in the backyard. Made of concrete. Amazing what used to be done.
Had a PhD student living with us who was focused on growing bacteria that were discovered in Japan that will break down some plastics and return them to their original petroleum components.
Don’t be breathing those fumes from plastics, of course, as they are highly carcinogenic.

My Grandpa always used various 55 gallon barrels that the oilfield guys would bring him. All of us grandkids were surprised that people in the city did not have burn barrels. The city folk just added to the landfills.

Would that help better if you make the chimney higher for more suction?

    • @neri0000
      @neri0000 2 роки тому +2

yes, it's the same idea as a hot air balloon, the more hot air the more it pulls upwards. Therefore a tall chimney with a lot of hot air inside it, pulls a harder draft

I miss the 80s . You could buy a man stone backyard incinerator, they were garbage incinerator rocket stoves. a door keep dumping garbage in, open air holes on bottom, ash door on side, never rusted out.
Now I use a $40 behrens trash incinerator, has holes everywhere and rarely needs a fan blower to burn clean. It has outlasted every 50 gal drum and chimney add on. And I don't have drill cut weld. Main thing is cover it up when not in use so no moisture rusts it out.
