I think that the RadCharger is a prime example of the Wetzel engineering process. I have been watching Matt do this for years. First you build something really cool, but you get rushed for reasons that are unforseen, you take it to the field, and something breaks. Then you fix it back better than before, and the process begins again. Rudy, you're a chip of the old block, but with a sharper edge.
There was a lot that was ridiculous about the challenge. The one handed shock swap was completely ridiculous but like many of the other “challenges” it was made easier or harder based on the competitors choices. Rudy’s choice to go with a full sized truck certainly made things more difficult on the tight trails. Overall I think the challenge was a fail on OnX.
Usually folks choose + build their rig based on the kind of trails they go on. Maybe the OnX folks should have told the competitors what trail they'd be going on, so the rigs could be built to spec. Although there's something to be said for a small vehicle fitting through a large passage, but a big vehicle vehicle not fitting through a narrow passage.
@@om617yota8it's supposed to be a affordable build, to spend thousands of dollars on a purpose built rig defeats the objective of encouraging other less forchanet (less money to use, ) people to afford to go Wheeling, all the best to you all
The whole series was really disappointing. The filming was horrible as well as the dialog. They made something that should have been fun, very 'meh.' It was kind of silly. Why not make the Challenge like what they would experience where they were going? Certainly didn't make me want to run out and buy OnX...not a bit. The absolute best videography was certainly Nate at Dirt Lifestyle. He's got an eye. He should give a master's class. Having owned a Ramcharger as a kid, I had high hopes, but the platform has some limitations. But Rudy did great work on it within the constraints of the "Challenge." What would be really cool would be a crossover with Fab Rats to see how much of a crawler they can make it. You can't "boat tail" the rear without removing the windows. But maybe make it like a pre-79 and just remove the whole roof. Then boat tail the nose and rear, lower it's stance, put in the Dodge 360 or maybe a newer Hemi and let 'er rip. that's my 2¢.
I live in the northeast rust belt and have been frustrated by the lack of corrosion protection on the builds by the other UA-cam channels. It made me very happy to see that shiny painted back axle. Keep building for the long term.
when you said that you deserved the hard work because you did it wrong the first time... thats some hard self reflection that shows what a good person you are. i cant see how but if i ever need a trail rig ill be asking you to build it.
For as wounded as the RADCharger looked limping off the trail, she really retained strong bones. Now that you finished welding on the rear axle she looks to be ready for a rinse and repeat. Yours was a real competitor and won the best looking rig hands down. I'm looking forward to more happy wheeling.
I'm so glad you are getting the Radcharger back in action .It' a great vehicle. Those tracks were too narrow ,no fun .It's too good to damage to that extent..
OnX did NOT plan their "Off Road Challenge" very well...that was OBVIOUS as thousands of us watched the whole thing on the different channels...they DID NOT do their homework well, OR know the trails and their hard to crazy spots well, OR plan the entire challenge well. The whole thing LACKED common sense, reason and consideration for the contestants nice rigs they built and all of the hard work, time and money they put into building them. The challenge, the course, the obstacles and OnX's LACK of due preparation and FAILURE to let everyone KNOW ahead of time about the crazy, narrow, steep spots was NOT cool. Most of us SERIOUSLY DOUBT the contestants WOULD have taken their vehicles through the ridiculous challenges in such insane places and torn up and broken them needlessly like that. If OnX does anything like their challenge in the future the WHOLE THING needs to be done REALISTICALLY and REASONABLY on trails that DON'T tear the hell out of them...that is not FUN, it's just STUPID.
Maybe ask Mr. Irish for some help setting up some good ladder bars to keep down your axle wrap issues, never hurts to ask someone whos got it down. Cheers 🍻
The Rad Charger is so cool I'm glad to see it being fixed up!! I'm glad you're doing the body work, those challenges were ridiculous. The Rad is for offroad but it's to awesome to look abused. It's a very worthy steed and a great investment. Colt did do a great job, no questions asked!

I always learn quite a bit when I watch Rudy’s videos. That is one of several reasons why I subscribed, To his channel. Plus, my wife and I love his attitude!
Still young and learning, saw things during the original first build that thought,,, oops, yup, he's gonna be redoing that, and you are but that's how ya learn what do & don't actually works, you're doing fine
Hey Rudy! such an impressive and satisfying watch! i gotta say, your skills and attitude are inspiring. you are the real deal, Bro. like so many other guys have posted, you attack every challenge and problem so confidently and logically that it's enjoyable to watch and cheer for you. so many youtubers are just plain posers, no real substance just out to get popular and ride the gravy chain if they get lucky. but your enjoyment and enthusiasm for what you are doing is contagious and just plain fun to watch. it really struck me today unlike the rest of the Utah guys, it's just you and Janelle! and you still get it all done like a boss and with authenticity, never any excuses or whining. good for you!

I can totally appreciate you not "repricing" or revaluing someone else's goods.👍🏼 Maybe it's just me but... It's something you want,(in this case, need) and a fair price. So why potentially "insult" by naming your value on the item you desire?
Fixed and improved. That's a win. I love your thoughts on not talking the truck seller down, when you know the value matched the asking price. Dang, I'm missing another car show. Have fun.
Hey Rudy: I amazed by the mechanical complexity of the things you do. I've been buying and selling cars for years (and doing most of the normal maintenance on them), but I've never tackled the things that both you snd your dad do, and I'm impressed! The work that you are currently doing on your Rad Charger is a perfect example of a guy who, no matter what sort of repair work is necessary... you just seem to "wade in" and do it. Good for you!!!
I think it is all for the best I don't know that a budget build would do well on the UA. That said, rad charger is going to be a great build when it is finished and you aren't limited by budget
Rudy I am glad to see the Rad Charger back on the road driving. I am hoping to see the Rad Charger in person. I love the paint scheme it definitely is one of a kind
Switch to Holley Sniper FI. Don’t forget to change the oil before you run it. All that fuel in the oil will spin a bearing. Love the way this thing turned out. Bring it over to the Rubicon. It’ll fit there.
@@mwagner_87 I'm not saying they don't, but it appears to happen at a much lower rate than with the Fitech. I have seen 1 successful Fitech install out of half a dozen or so attempts on channels I follow on youtube. I've seen at least twice as many Holley's installed, and can only recall 1 failure.
@@mwagner_87 I mean even brand new cars break down. Usually when the Holley system goes it’s because someone installed it wrong or did a crappy job on connections. Not saying the Holley never fails but I’ve not seen people have much success with FITech. It’s also much quicker to get the Holley parts if you break on the trail. I’d recommend doing old school tbi off a gm so you use all off the shelf parts but you need to know what your doing to make that work on a mopar.
Very inspiring, to get a bent up truck right again. Sometimes these things are overwhelming when they happen, and then you just go out one morning and say, "It's not that bad, I can fix this". And it's great to see this happen. It's even better and stronger than before. And by watching it I learned a few things about rear suspension. Good clear entertaining video. You're really making a decent channel into a good channel. Keep up the good work! Databyter p.s. I don't know who your cinematographer was, but they did a good job on this video. It was natural anc clear. p.p.s. Give it an oil change immediately if it was really full of unburnt fuel for days. The oil is probably bad, even if it looks like the gas has evaporated out of it. It hasn't. Not completely. Smell it to be sure. If it smells fuelly, it is. There is only a few things that can really screw up oil, and you did one of em.
Hi, to help your suspension blades work you should put Teflon strips between each blade. In Switzerland we did it in the garage of Volvo trucks, the blades had a longer lifespan and did not make noise while working better.
Those high spring perches are putting a lot of extra torque on the springs. Need to get regular saddles for the springs that are low to the axle and re-arch the springs or change whatever you need to eliminate those perches. You'll have a lot less bending of the springs.
Dig the RAD Charger and I'm happy to see it get some love! Bought a shirt today as my small contribution to help support your channel. Hope you get the carburation issue resolved. No love for the FI-Tech system in the comments!
I had the fuel pressure regulator go out on my Ford Bronco 2. So when the injectors opened it was spraying a firehose stream of fuel in instead of a garden hose. Hydraulic locked cylinders. When we took plugs out to unlock gas sprayed everywhere. There was a spark. Fire. Running and jumping. To busy to even cuss properly. Fire extinguisher made a mess. No big damage. Oil pressure line was plastic and burned like a fuse. Electronics were fine. Just had too much pressure in fuel rail. New regulator fixed that. Ah the memories. LOL
Better get a hold of Robby for that body damage, especially for the tailgate section of it! RADcharger is a beast! Really like the channel and the work you're doing!

I think Rudy should have made a 4 link setup for the rear for better articulation. I love the Radcharger and watching this channel it's interesting. I wonder what he's going to do next.
At the beginning of the video, that list seemed rather extensive and possible drawn out. You (or the editor...or both) did a great job covering the repairs! Loved it! Can't wait to see where you go from here.
FiTec is trash! I had one on my 85 Dodge W150 for 3 years and had nothing but trouble with it. Finally got rid of it and bought the Edelbrock Pro-Flo 4 and have been using it for 2 years with no problems. It cost more but it has never left me stranded on the trail.
I always look forward to a new video from you. Glad to see the RAD Charger getting repaired. It is too cool to let sit wounded. Maybe you can take us on a wheeling adventure in it before or after the car show. And Rudy, please stay away from challenges that are set up to intentionally destroy your rig.

I absolutely LOVE your channel. To the point that I want to start over landing. In order to do so, I ordered a lift kit from ROUGH COUNTRY. I AM POSTING THIS AS A WARNING TO EVERYONE..... I purchased a 4" lift kit for MY 84 RadCharger. I was told that it would have EVERYTHING that I needed. Well, the front sway bar links, the rear u bolts , and shackles all had to be repurchased due to the lift, being more of a 6" lift. So, it is a bit taller, but my husband is a double amputee, and this causes a problem.... Not including the $248 in parts that I had to purchase afterwards. OK, so I called RC directly and even though he agreed that the wrong parts were in the box, he REFUSED to help in any way! We live on a tight budget, and this f**ked me over , HARD! I just don't want any of you to have to go through the extra money, and crappy service!
put an anti-wrap bar/assembly onto that axle truss and up to the front about the same length as the driveshaft. They work quite well and eliminate the problems from axle wrap.
Good job Rudy. Dig it man. Cut the back off from the top to the bottom had a 45. Shorten the backup tailgate relieves slant. Maybe you will get the rocks in wrap it with steel plates it'll slide off.🤷🏽♂️😊😎✌🏽🙋🏽♂️.
I always struggle watching you weld around chrome stanchions. 😅 I’m sure Robbie would pull those quarter panels mostly back for you in a half hour. Get your shut lines sorted anyway.
All the damage to the Radcharger just showed you what needed to be fixed and modified....... Great job getting it fixed up thus far. I also LOVE the new tee shirt. Is Janelle okay?

Good to see you are getting it back on the road. Robby will have some good suggestions for the body work. I would go to a qjet. They are very capable on and off road when set up correctly. Have to laugh everytime you get on the ground to work on a vehicle that is in a hoist. Get comfortable using it.

Been driving with a broken leaf spring on my super duty because of the cost of a new one, thanks for the tip! I’m sure my wife won’t mind another pieced out truck in the driveway
Hey back in the day 1977 as a 20yr old i went to the local spring shop wanted to add a leaf or other. The guy there took them off through them in the furnace got hot hot .no bushing obv. Then stuck them in a big ass hydraulic press and rea arched them. I think there was some quenching and paint . Any way other thing was we refer to that anti rack bar as a anti lap bar. Back again in 82 ish i had bronco and when you got it going hit tge brakes there would be some twist or lapping. "And there's your dinner "
That asking lot out full size Blazer style truck on tight crawl . Sandhollow and Moab you use larger truck , Arizona and Colorado those tight washes are Brutal .
Yep Iv'e been in your position before Rudy with my 89DodgeW150. I'm following ATV's, Jeep's, Toyotas down narrow ass trails that they cut out. The pine tree's were kicking my Dodges ass.

How is Holly? The rad charger moves under own steam. Most of your issues were unfinished welds. Welding, improved bracing, modified brackets and painting are completed. Overall size vs narrow spaces. Any plans to redesign the taillights and rear gate hatch? Removable, caged, top mount led's. What about driver cabin locker id location(s)? I love all the CAD & plasma table fabrication. The cool thing about that is you can make two of anything, or even flip a part over if need be to go on the other side. Plus you can store anything for when you need to make another one after a destructive trail ride. A lot less cardboard and eye-chrometer stuff than in your dad's shop. That narrow trail and one-handed repair task were ridiculous. Lost a lot of respect for the sponsor for their poor choices. The whole point of X is to find safe trails that don't destroy your ride.

It's like the event planners did not understand the purpose of OnX at all. It's all about finding trails your vehicle and skill level are suited for. For example, never take a wider vehicle on a 50 inch trail. I'm pretty sure BLM and the parks don't allow that.
OnX did NOT plan their "Off Road Challenge" very well...that was OBVIOUS as thousands of us watched the whole thing on the different channels...they DID NOT do their homework well, OR know the trails and their hard to crazy spots well, OR plan the entire challenge well. The whole thing LACKED common sense, reason and consideration for the contestants' nice rigs they built and all of the hard work, time and money they put into building them. Loving the more consistent uploads. Your really starting to get in the groove. Your content is 🔥. The radcharger is so sweet. It makes your jeep look so tiny 😆 ❤❤🎉
Rudy, I can't see ow you had the traction bar mounted on the non axle end. If it's not, it needs to be mounted kinda like a spring shackle, so it will rotate back and forth. I asking because although I can't see how it's mounted, but the bent springs look very familiar, as in how mine used to look. The reason for the shackle type mount is so when you droop the spring, it get shorter(the area between the spring eye bolt and the spring end bolt, when it's compressed, the spring gets longer. If the anti wrap bar is hard mounted, it will not allow the spring to get longer and shorter, so it bends the springs, but at any point of droop or compression, you apply torque, it will pull up and keep it from torque wrap. It works a lot like the old school ladder bars that connect to the leaf springs to give them tension and not wrap, because they were not hard mounted at all just hung there, but, the ends would or could slide back and forth on the bottom of the main spring leaf.
Gotta say, that OnX challenge was just a bunch of balls. Whoever organized it should pay for the messed up BS damage. They may as well have just had a "drive off a cliff challenge" for all it's relevance.

U should take the lead spring shims and throw them away ..they always cause dirt and debris between the leaf's and I causes the leaf's to weaken and break
Some food for thought…relocate the tail lights and sheet metal the original location. Next time you hit the wall, replace the sheet metal skin and no broken light.
Yep. Pretty much, my thoughts as well.
lesson learned on the axles ??? well they b better now 😅.
yeah that shock swap thing was a last min act of empty mindedness 😂 !!
The part you forgot is once it breaks, they half ass fix it, then it breaks again several more times.
I agree that the shock swap was totally ridiculous.
But Rudy did great work on it within the constraints of the "Challenge."
What would be really cool would be a crossover with Fab Rats to see how much of a crawler they can make it.
Really glad to see this channel working out for Rudy. Next stop 300K subscribers!
when you said that you deserved the hard work because you did it wrong the first time... thats some hard self reflection that shows what a good person you are. i cant see how but if i ever need a trail rig ill be asking you to build it.
For as wounded as the RADCharger looked limping off the trail, she really retained strong bones. Now that you finished welding on the rear axle she looks to be ready for a rinse and repeat. Yours was a real competitor and won the best looking rig hands down. I'm looking forward to more happy wheeling.
Rudy, I'm sure you know but if there is that much fuel in the cylinders, best change the oil because there is that much fuel in the oil as well.
I'm so glad you are getting the Radcharger back in action .It' a great vehicle. Those tracks were too narrow ,no fun .It's too good to damage to that extent..
Yea good to know where it can go.. more room in the back camping with ya lady another big sunroof 'sleeping under the stars.

Getting it back in shape . Thanks for sharing !
Maybe ask Mr. Irish for some help setting up some good ladder bars to keep down your axle wrap issues, never hurts to ask someone whos got it down. Cheers 🍻
Rudy..... That RADCharger is awesome!!! Such an awesome project.

“A truck coming today with parts” wasn’t what I thought he meant at all.
Same. I thought he was waiting on UPS or FedEx to deliver parts he had ordered. Not a whole truck he was going to use for spare parts. 🤣
Yeah, it’s likevthe fedex guy arrived, left his truck and took an Uber.
It was hard to watch the rad charger get destroyed on the onx challenge! Glad to see it getting fixed. Can't wait to see it in action again

I can totally appreciate you not "repricing" or revaluing someone else's goods.👍🏼
Maybe it's just me but...
It's something you want,(in this case, need) and a fair price. So why potentially "insult" by naming your value on the item you desire?
Fair price means realistic seller. Reward their fairness with a quick sale.
Fixed and improved. That's a win.
I love your thoughts on not talking the truck seller down, when you know the value matched the asking price. Dang, I'm missing another car show. Have fun.
Ridicon and the RAD charger are both quite impressive. I’m truly still enjoying the paint scheme as well.
Great repair. $500 donor truck, $2000 worth of parts. God bless
Funny that sometimes (many times), the whole is worth less than the sum of the parts...
@@AndrewAMartin so true
I think it is all for the best I don't know that a budget build would do well on the UA. That said, rad charger is going to be a great build when it is finished and you aren't limited by budget
Rudy I am glad to see the Rad Charger back on the road driving. I am hoping to see the Rad Charger in person. I love the paint scheme it definitely is one of a kind
glad to see you back. would like to see what you work on daily, mite be interesting to all
Switch to Holley Sniper FI. Don’t forget to change the oil before you run it. All that fuel in the oil will spin a bearing. Love the way this thing turned out. Bring it over to the Rubicon. It’ll fit there.
Sniper does the same thing
Winter is coming, time to finish the tracks for the rudicon
Those high spring perches are putting a lot of extra torque on the springs. Need to get regular saddles for the springs that are low to the axle and re-arch the springs or change whatever you need to eliminate those perches. You'll have a lot less bending of the springs.
In Barnes we trussed
LOL
❤Team RAD ... getting close to 1/4 million subs! 👍😎✊

I think Rudy should have made a 4 link setup for the rear for better articulation. I love the Radcharger and watching this channel it's interesting. I wonder what he's going to do next.
Anti wrap bar (torque arm) front mounting on trail matter is great Perfectly matches U-fount geometry.
At the beginning of the video, that list seemed rather extensive and possible drawn out. You (or the editor...or both) did a great job covering the repairs! Loved it! Can't wait to see where you go from here.
Good work. Looking forward to seeing the Comanche sometime.
Rudy, this its one of your best videos yet. Great screen presence and video editing. Love the Radcharger. Great work!

When does Janelle get her own channel ? Great job Sir, you're going far. Those challenges were not thoughtful of your large sized vehicle. We all get that, you've learned from that experience too, it's nice to hear you comment positively about your experience. Keep up the great fab work, plus just be Rudy...
If you can't reasonably protect them, make those taillights removable when you approach close quarter rock crawling trails.

@moparman1962 They did seem to be making the vehicles punch above their weight class. Seemed more for dedicated rock crawler/buggy Vs jack of all trade street 4x4.
You should take the Radcharger to the Full size invasion next year!
Let Robby fix the body damage, it will look like new in no time 😉
I really like that truck, its been a great project for you!

@moparman1962 so go away and don't watch crybaby
Good to see you back!
Build it, Break it, Build it better.
Super cool rig, gonna be even better.

Very nice job. It's coming along nicely so far my friend.
Nice work! Glad to see the radcharger getting fixed up!

During the challenge, you mentioned that you did not have time to sort out which control operated which locker.

I am waiting for the leaf Spring delete video, ha. The rad charger is wicked
Man, Im so embarrassed. I feel "cool" for being able to change my oil, and brakes. You just disassembled an entire chassis and suspension. I need to up my game.
Awesome channel, and I love the RadCharger!

Couldn't agree more. If you are going to include 50 inch wide trails, tell contestants BEFORE they start building their vehicles. That's a whole different class of vehicle. It's like the event planners did not understand the purpose of OnX at all. It's all about finding trails your vehicle and skill level are suited for. For example, never take a wider vehicle on a 50 inch trail. I'm pretty sure BLM and the parks don't allow that.
@@BigGuy8059... EXACTLY!!!
The RAD Charger was to big for most of those trails you were on! But the major parts are fixed now!

The Rad charger is a Great rig hope it evolves into its full-grown mode
Loving the more consistent uploads. Your really starting to get in the groove. Your content is 🔥. The radcharger is so sweet. It makes your jeep look so tiny 😆 ❤❤🎉
I remove the oil fill plug before heating and welding on axles to prevent pressure and/or explosions.
Awesome glad to see radcharger back it’s awesome
“Passed the fast food test - what’s more American than that!”
Brilliant 😂
Keep up the good work, always good content on tge rudy channel
A rosebud tip for your torch will heat much better than the normal welding or cutting tips.
You are a hard worker, keep the faith.
Gotta say, that OnX challenge was just a bunch of balls. Whoever organized it should pay for the messed up BS damage. They may as well have just had a "drive off a cliff challenge" for all it's relevance.

U should take the lead spring shims and throw them away ..they always cause dirt and debris between the leaf's and I causes the leaf's to weaken and break
what kind of tires were on the radcharger at the end of the video?
So are you going to paint the Rudicon to match the Radcharger?
Some food for thought…relocate the tail lights and sheet metal the original location. Next time you hit the wall, replace the sheet metal skin and no broken light.
