    The gun is to protect him against the North American Feral Liberal. They travel in packs, and spit at and attack humans who have opposing views. Usually attack when their victim is not looking or have you back to them. The Feral Liberal is easy to spot though. The female usually has green, pink or red hair. The male is usually skinny, and will appear to be female and have feminine traits and often confused for being the female by those not familiar with the Feral Liberal. Both the male and female have a bad odor. When the female does not get its way, it makes a loud screeching sound and yells "Not my president!". The male only says "Mom, can you heat me up a Hot Pocket?". Both male and female Feral Liberals won't leave the nest till they are in their 40's and it's rare for either to be employed.

    I have an earlier version of this same chipper that i bought used and these chippers are beasts. Don't forget to grease both of the flywheel bearings, inspect and adjust the knife gap every 10 hours. When the knife gap is out of adjustment the chipper won't self feed very well and it will start shredding some of the larger materal in stead of chipping it.When adjusting the knife gap the best rsults have been when i set the gap a little tight making it slightly difficult to move the guage otherwise the self feeding doesnt work very well.
    Make sure to get the knife sharpened if it gets nicked or chipped, if you continue to chip with a damaged knife it might break. i get my knife sharpened at a local machine shop for $10.00 and i have 2 of them.
    Mine has the High Discharge shoot and it is worth every penny, i can fill my full size pickup bed in 6 hours or less and thats bt myself and cutting the trees down as well.
    Good luck with your chipper, its an awesome machine!

      @petebeasttexashomesteading  7 років тому

      Thanks for the tips, I will definitely sharpen and adjust the knife as you said soon.

    • @andersonnettleship845
      @andersonnettleship845 7 років тому

      The knives don't need to be sharpened that often just keep checking the condition of the edges every 10 hours of operation, they don't have to be razor sharp to do the job your mainly looking for Knicks or chips to the blade. You can also get an idea of the blade condition by chipping a larger piece of wood (4" to 4 1/2") and then pulling it back and looking at the cut edge. The surface should be fairly flat if it isn't then you probably need to check the knife for damage. And I'm sure you have read the manual but it's worth mentioning that the knife must be sharpened my a machine shop and not with a grinder to maintain a 40 degree angle and to not overheat the tool steel.

    • @andersonnettleship845
      @andersonnettleship845 7 років тому

      Also this chipper will chip 4 3/4" wood but it does slow down a little and I have to pull the larger wood back sometimes so it can speed back up.
      At some point I am going to have to replace the motor on mine because the previous owner didn't take very good care of it and it is using quite a bit of oil. I pulled the head thinking that it might have a bad head gasket but the cylinder walls are scored pretty deep and it's cheaper to replace the motor than to rebuild it. I'm planning on getting a 420 CC Predator engine from Harbor Freight since they are on sale for $300.00 till the end of the year.

They probably have never seen and will never see a wild rattle snake, puma, brown or black bear in the wild. A gun is a tool! Their ignorance makes them tools. Keep up the great projects and please keep sharing them ,

    A very nice video and it was very helpful to me in determining what machine I will be purchasing. The machine does have a centrifugal clutch which makes it much easier to start manually. Do not be afraid of the larger diameter limbs, it will just eat them up. I will opt for a chipper/shredder when I make my purchase. All of those smaller branches you just put through the shredder and it will also allow you to do things like corn stalks, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts. Those fibrous stalks won't make it through the chipper but go through the shredder with ease. Great video, nice machine but I need the shredding capability for my yard. Thanks!

    I wouldn't recommend burning pine of any size if you're putting the smoke through a chimney. Open pit might be okay with a screen, but quite a few evergreens contribute to fast creosote buildup, and popping. It'll probably gum up your chipper too. I keep having to clean my chainsaw with Acetone to remove that sticky sap crud. Fortunately for you there didn't seem to be any evergreens in your pile. It was cool that your machine ate it all up so nicely.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading

    Thanks for the video. This might be the chipper I get. I'm sorry for the remarks you're getting about your sidearm. I live in the country myself and have killed wild hogs and coyotes just this week. I also have copperheads, cottonmouths and bobcats out here. I carry a sidearm nearly all the time and I don't know why anti-gun leftists feel like they have to get on your channel and give their two cents. I have made UA-cam videos myself and in pretty much all of them, my weapon is under my shirt. One of my "modern sporting rifles" is hanging on a rack next to my back door! I know one thing, when this economy collapses, and it will one day, I dare some leftist to come to me for help. He can flag down a policeman. Carry on!

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  7 років тому +3

      Thank you, it's hard to reason with an anti-gun lefty because they don't think before they shoot off their mouth. They don't understand logic and therefore in a serious situation they will most likely be a victim. As I said in an earlier comment "It's easier to reason with my dog than a far left anti-gun socialist. Thank you again my friend.

    • @GettingtheTruthOut
      @GettingtheTruthOut 6 років тому +1

      I'm a leftist. Stop being stupid and ignorant. I carry a 10mm Glock sidearm and a Mossberg on my RTV when I'm in the woods, unless I'm using heavy equipment like this because the sound keeps the predators away. I'm quite certain my place is far more remote than yours and we have bear, coyote, wolves, mountain lions etc. everywhere out here. You guys need to stop listening to Fox and talk radio because they are distorting you're view of who we are. A leftists is simply a person that favors the working man over the billionaire class and believes all people should be treated equally. That's it in a nutshell. When you are running a chipper, there is no reason to have that sidearm. Now, you may have been carrying while gathering and just didn't take it off, which I understand. But don't pretend you need it while that chipper is running, that's just moronic.

    • @perryjones8997
      @perryjones8997 6 років тому +2

      "A leftists is simply a person that favors the working man over the billionaire class and believes all people should be treated equally." Ummm...I don't THINK so. leftist wants to TAKE from the WORKING man...you know...the ones who BUILT this country and now give it to all those groups (illegals, CERTAIN minority groups (excluding Asians an Europeans) who feel ENTITLED and that WE (WHITEY of course) OWE them.
      Period. End of definition. Find me a leftie who wants closed borders and an end to the welfare state. Please. P.s. If he wants to wear a gun while running that machine, or taking a bath, or screwing, etc...that HIS business not YOURS. He aint breaking any LAWS. Leftist don't use logic...they just spout off like children without facts or reason or logic. Just like telling someone "he shouldn't be wearing that firearm while on the loader'. Geez. No wonder this country is going to hell soon as the leftists return to power.

    I think my only concern with this machine would be bearing wear. It isn't a direct drive chipper, which probably makes it a little quieter, and easier to service in some cases, but that thrust bearing would take a heck of a beating. Anyway, easy service if you know how to do it. Thanks for the video!

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  8 років тому +3

      The flange pillow block bearings are actually very durable and should outlast the life of the chipper, as long as you pump some fresh grease in them once in a while. I've been a machinist/toolmaker all my life and I can tell you that these type of bearings are used on a lot of heavy duty machines. Thanks for watching.

    I am torn between purchasing the 3.75 in. 7.0 HP DR Premier 375 Wood Chipper vs the new 4 in. 9.5 HP Detail K2 Gas Powered Kohler Engine Chipper Shredder with DOT Road Legal Tires, Extended Axles and Trailer Tow Hitch. Both are priced right around $1600 (Home Depot has a deal, 20% off the original price of the Detail K2 unit, which brings it to $1600). The reason I am torn between these two models is the following: DR Premier Weight (175 lbs) vs Detail K2 (375 lbs). I don't have an ATV and I'd rather not have to tow the Detail K2 around on my yard with my Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Detail K2 model is much more powerful and offers both automatic chipping or shredding depending on the size of the branches that are being placed into the single hopper. Do you think that mobility will be an issue with the 375 lbs Detail K2 if I am to not use an ATV or SUV, and move it around with just myself around the yard?

    Thanks for the review. After using Vermeer chippers, I don't think the DR has enough torque to pull through large saplings and small trees with branches. I think it'd be frustrating. I guess its rental for me.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  6 років тому

      Thank you, it does have the torque but like I said in the video over 3 inches I'd just use as logs for my fire place. I cut down a 54 foot pine tree and this chipper mulched the branches up without even phasing it.

    • @GettingtheTruthOut
      @GettingtheTruthOut 6 років тому +1

      I have nearly all hardwoods, so that wouldn't work for me, unfortunately. I have found some used Vermeer's, but $7k for a small very used Vermeer, I just can't justify it at the moment.

    D2 steel knives? Interesting. I've made a few from A2 because it was what was available...they didn't work well, maybe need to be drawn back a little softer, but they break. I figured S7 would have been better do to shock resistance, but I wouldn't have expected D2. Most of available chipper knives on the market are A8 or A9 oil quenched tool steel.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  5 років тому +1

      Not sure what type of steel they use but as toolmaker and grinder for over 30 years I would make it out of M2 or M3 tool steel, but it would be difficult to heat treat properly.

    • @vclubamp
      @vclubamp 5 років тому

      I've never looked at the charpy test numbers for HSS, but I'm sure it would hold an edge better.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  5 років тому

      @@vclubamp Usually M2 and M3 HSS if heat treated properly will have a Rockwell hardness of around 62 and if it were Cobalt M42 it would be around 65. These tool steels cut regular steel like butter, but like I said it would be to difficult to heat treat without the proper oven and quenching technique.

    Thanks for the great video, Pete. Question for you: Does the DR ever jam up? I am looking at a Detail D2 that has a quick releases on the chutes to enable quick access to the blades. This supposedly helps with clearing jams. It looks like your chute is bolted on, so I wondered if that was ever an issue for you with your chipper. Thanks

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading

      I've never had an issue with it jamming up, but of course you shouldn't be running logs through it ether.

    So Pete almost 5 years in would you still recommend the DR chipper? How often to sharpen and I am sure that depends on usage, is it difficult to get to the blades and do you sharpen yourself?

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't used it enough in the five years but it works well and you can sharpen the blade yourself. Only thing I don't like with most any wood chipper of this type is some branches need to be cleaned up in order to fit through the bottle neck of the chipper.

      David Corbett The branches were about three to four months old in the video. But I recently cut down a 54 ft pine and the wood chipper chipped all the branches with no problem. As for the gun I only carry it on my property as I have over 20 acres that connect to other 75 to 100 acres of woods. I only worry about who comes up my driveway and wild boar :)

    Pete, I'm considering buying a used DR chipper that would run off my 39 hp tractors PTO. It appears, other than the engine the chipper looks the same. Could you comment on how the DR is working now that you have used it for some time? Also, how often do you need to sharpen the blades, and is this something you do yourself?
    I have found, too often equipment works well when it's new and all factory setting are optionalized but with extended use it's not up to a longterm task.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  7 років тому

      I've used it to chip the branches of a 54 foot pine tree and it had no problems. I haven't sharpened the blades yet because I haven't used it enough but I'm happy with the quality and power of the chipper. The blades are easy to get to, there's a plate you take off the side then rotate the flywheel until the blades show through the opening. You can sharpen the blades much like a lawn mower blade but you'll have to use a hand grinder. You should have plenty of power running off your PTO. Hope this helps.

  • @mattseymour8637
    @mattseymour8637 6 років тому

    Thanks for the info. How do you actually sharpen them?

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  6 років тому

      You can clamp it in a vise and use a hand held angle grinder and just lightly grind and follow the same angle that's on the blade. Don't grind the heck out of it or turn the blade blue from the heat or it will soften the cutting edge.

      Jeffrey Beyer The branches have to be fairly clean to go through the chipper. Pine is fairly soft and you'll be able to bend any branches that are Y shaped. In other words the opening at the bottom of the chute will only allow 4 and 3/4 inch to go through.
