I was in middle school myself when this storyline aired. These young actors did an amazing job with the story, and I appreciated that they looked like kids and were young actors playing those roles.

I remember reading that the intial story was for Joey and Billy to be a couple.
I am torn because I thought the friendship angle played out well. But I knew that this meant that eventually the show would toss the character in the trash can. But I am glad Ryan is getting the praise he deserves. This was an epic story and it honestly changed my life.
I was a guy the exact same age going through the thing when this story came out. Ryan (Billy) and Wortham (Andrew) changed my life.

I like this clip. They show three different approaches to when people coming out as gay. There was Alana who was completely accepting of Billy. Then there is Kevin who was hostile for the most part (as I’ve never seen Kevin act like such a major dirtbag). Then there is Joey, who represented a gray area as he was confused about his friend coming out to him.
And then they showed that there was some self-righteousness on Alana’s part for not being more sympathetic to Joey’s confusion since he wasn’t presently able to quite process the homosexuality issue.
    Totally great writing.

Kevin was right to be hostile he understood the trouble that came with that lifestyle and wanted to protect his brother. Back in those days people would beat you to death just for hanging around a gay person add in the AIDS CRISIS and people had zero tolerance for the Gay Lifestyle.

@@mikevickphiit’s not a lifestyle. If you think it’s ok to ostracise someone for being gay you’re just as bad as the bigots

OLTL one of the best soaps ever and so under appreciated by the industry as far the show itself was concerned

Chris that played Joey was cute in that show. I wonder what would have happened if HE had played the gay character

That was actually the original plan. Michael Malone, who had taken over as head writer, has said in interviews that his original plan was for Joey to be gay, but the network wouldn’t allow it, so he had to settle for a new character who was Joey’s friend. I mean, it did introduce the world to Ryan Philippe, so I’d say it was worth it. 😃

I so totally forgot that that a young Chris McKenna played Joey Buchanan for awhile. I started watching One Life To Live for this particular storyline and watched it faithfully until its unfortunate cancellation. And now 25 years later, give or take a few years, he came back to daytime as Det. Mark Harding on Y&R. Well so much for that role to, since his character was killed off (literally) this past week. They sure dropped the ball on that one. Very ironic that alot of fans of Y&R, (Greg Rikkart who plays Kevin also wanted this, for his character to be gay, (he's gay in real life), and alot of the fans wanted Kevin & Harding to be a couple. So very disappointing. Can't wait to see though what Chris has lined up next.

I didn't watch oltl when Chris played Joey, I started watching in December of 1993 when he was already gone. Chris did an amazing job as Joey!

It's too bad they back tracked on making Joey gay. I get it though. I was 19 in 1992. I came out at 15. It was a much much different time and there were zero gays in any media. When I was 15 I had nothing to look to and I actually didn't meet another out gay person until 1992 when I went away to school. People say Will and Grace opened the door but it was MTV's Undressed that really changed everything.

Chris McKenna was such a good actor. Since Nathan Fillion is doing well in primetime I wish they could ask Chris to come back. It's interesting to see Kevin written in this way, although I guess that was the show's view, that the Buchanan men would be homophobic.
Does anyone know who is playing that girl Alana? She looks familiar to me. I guess she was only around for this story?

There was a great pushback against the lgbt community from the late 80s towards the early 2000s because of the aids epidemic that made people stigmatize gay people and a lot of instutions like the church and govenments around the world fueled this prejudice.
As a gay millennial I experienced this in a form of bullying growing up in a conservative and nonsectarian school in the Philippines in 1994. It is just now that people have been more open to acknowledge the rights of lgbt people. And the Gen zs and gen alphas are the ones who could freely express their sexuality without going through extreme mental and physical bullying that the previous generation went through and fought with their lives.
The gen zs should learn from the previous generations. They ought to take care of the older lgbt people (as most of them were not able to create their own families in the past and would be alone in their old age) as a way of giving back to the rights we once fought and died for which they now enjoy living.

Do they ever actually show Billy saying the words? All of the descriptions say he tells someone, but then it's just the aftermath.

Yes, he tells several people. Great storyline but I resent that they got rid of Billy after the storyline was over.
