This is literally THE best version of this song. The absolute chaotic passion in this knowing Cole was still hurting and using dope at the time, and it's even haunting almost thinking he was arrested 2 days after this was posted looking back now.

"A lot of the songs on the record do date back that far. The songs were written over a long period of time, and they’re kind of all over the place. But “Dust” is kind of an important part of the record for me because it’s kind of an outlier - you know, a lot of people were disappointed that I recorded it differently than I do live, that it’s more kind of mellow, and I’m not screaming like I do live. But for me, it’s always been important to have the live band be one thing, and the recorded band be kind of another thing. So to make the live version and the studio version of “Dust” the same wouldn’t allow there to be something that surprises people live." ZCS

Watched this 10+ times in the past 3 days. Cant get enough of DIIV!!
In my opinion both the album and this live version offer an interesting and rather obessessing version of the same song. This is energetic, raw and Zach clearly lashes out at the "Fucked to die" part, you can even see the guitarist looking at him impressed. But the album version actually offers a more droning, almost clostrophobic version of the song that I think works very well. This is very post-punk while the album one is much a more ethereal and drug-infused performance

I never listened to this song both with headphones and all the way through; consequently I wasn't thinking much of this. But now I have - it's AMAZING, I really hope this is their main sound on the new album cause it should be even better than Oshin.

This version is even much better than that on the album where this track in my opinion is not produced good enough.There the distorted guitar is too loud i think. But i also think the album is brillant, very intense and melancholic. I love healthy moon which has sth of Deerhunters' Desire Lines.Touches me very deep

Moonlight well at the time it was a new song and I guess people were just listening and not listening and dancing which would have been me because regardless of this being new or not, this song is a banger !
they should've just copy + pasted this recording onto the album. the album version's not as satisfying as this. I have to come back to this video a lot, a bit like self medicating
I agree with you and my personal opinion of course, but I feel the same about that record as a whole. A lot of the songs that were road tested in live performance were a lot more raw and aggressive. With regard to new material for a potential third album from them, the new tracks that have been teased also sound raw. Hopefully this next album they either keep the sound more live, or collaborate with a producer/recording engineer like Steve Albini or someone similar...

For what live performance lacks in effects for Coles voice he knows how to realy make up for in passion & fire wich makes this song much better than the album version because you feel & understand his pain more so.

what pedals do i need for that sound?
+nv delay chorus and the occasional boost/drive. A second delay pedal might be beneficial. The shorter delays work with solo better because the notes sound almost like tremolo picking.

the singer named the band after the nirvana song. they would have been "dive" spelled normally but there already is a group called that, a belgian industrial project, so they went with the wacky spelling out of respect for that act and to avoid any possible legal trouble.
