This is literally THE best version of this song. The absolute chaotic passion in this knowing Cole was still hurting and using dope at the time, and it's even haunting almost thinking he was arrested 2 days after this was posted looking back now.
"A lot of the songs on the record do date back that far. The songs were written over a long period of time, and they’re kind of all over the place. But “Dust” is kind of an important part of the record for me because it’s kind of an outlier - you know, a lot of people were disappointed that I recorded it differently than I do live, that it’s more kind of mellow, and I’m not screaming like I do live. But for me, it’s always been important to have the live band be one thing, and the recorded band be kind of another thing. So to make the live version and the studio version of “Dust” the same wouldn’t allow there to be something that surprises people live." ZCS
In my opinion both the album and this live version offer an interesting and rather obessessing version of the same song. This is energetic, raw and Zach clearly lashes out at the "Fucked to die" part, you can even see the guitarist looking at him impressed. But the album version actually offers a more droning, almost clostrophobic version of the song that I think works very well. This is very post-punk while the album one is much a more ethereal and drug-infused performance
I love this song because it really encompasses that dreamy/surfy sound that we all love DIIV for but with a little more umph, I can't wait for the new record
This version is even much better than that on the album where this track in my opinion is not produced good enough. There the distorted guitar is too loud i think. But i also think the album is brillant, very intense and melancholic. I love healthy moon which has sth of Deerhunters' Desire Lines.Touches me very deep
I never listened to this song both with headphones and all the way through; consequently I wasn't thinking much of this. But now I have - it's AMAZING, I really hope this is their main sound on the new album cause it should be even better than Oshin.
they should've just copy + pasted this recording onto the album. the album version's not as satisfying as this. I have to come back to this video a lot, a bit like self medicating
I agree with you and my personal opinion of course, but I feel the same about that record as a whole. A lot of the songs that were road tested in live performance were a lot more raw and aggressive. With regard to new material for a potential third album from them, the new tracks that have been teased also sound raw. Hopefully this next album they either keep the sound more live, or collaborate with a producer/recording engineer like Steve Albini or someone similar...
Moonlight well at the time it was a new song and I guess people were just listening and not listening and dancing which would have been me because regardless of this being new or not, this song is a banger !
The only way to be quiet is to be quick A slow death rite like an innocent fight Left me choked and white in a patch of light Feeling like a wick wax drowned and bright Burned skin like a string black ashes slight I know I gotta kick but I can’t get sick I’ll hold you here tight, keep you overnight And it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick Keep outta sight while my watch just ticks I’m trying to keep quiet but I can’t move quick Drowning in air, light, floating up in flight Then it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick You fall I forced myself to be quiet just to be quick Lead a slow death rite like an innocent fight Left me choked and white in a patch of light Feeling like a wick wax drowned and bright Burned skin like a string black ashes slight I know I gotta kick but I can’t get sick I’ll hold you here tight, keep you overnight And it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick But now I’m fucked to die in a world of shit I’m trying to keep quiet but I can’t move quick Wings matted with death spilled oil slick Then it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick And you fall
You took time out of your day to formulate this response so you could leave feeling like you were a better person for defending a burnt out hipster on youtube, your such a good person.
For what live performance lacks in effects for Coles voice he knows how to realy make up for in passion & fire wich makes this song much better than the album version because you feel & understand his pain more so.
I tabbed this live version of the song. Maybe the solo is a bit off sometimes because of the delay. Just mess around that notes. tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/d/diiv/dust_live_tab.htm
+nv delay chorus and the occasional boost/drive. A second delay pedal might be beneficial. The shorter delays work with solo better because the notes sound almost like tremolo picking.
Its a shame how they butchered this song on the album... The live version has so much heart and emotion as you can almost feel as you are experiencing ZCS fighting addiction and depression while the studio version sounds like he's trapped in a fish bowl on ketamine.. Only flaw on the album besides the Sky turned Sonic Youth disaster..
+Robbie Broome its too sad but always in on concert performance it loose the essence , the feeling of the thing wich you cachted the song when you listened first time in studio version/ anyway its no the samething
Listen it with headphones. Remove the one where you hear the keyboard. Maybe you'll appreciate it more because, like someone else already said, the arrangement doesn't sound set in stone. It sounds hassled. I mean that in the nicest way because as a musician I know being in that situation can be tense. But yeah, the song is superb.
Not too sure if the keyboard arrangement is set in stone. I've heard so many versions of this song. The guitar work isn't bad at all. It's that dissonance clashing with the guitars that causes the unsettling feeling for me.
instead of their self-described sound being one part THC two parts MDMA or whatever they said - DIIV is one part MDMA, two parts diacetylmorphine (heroin).
Maaan what a great performance .. dust is a GREAT song p.s : Cole is kinda trying too hard with his style u.u .. hahaha at first it was cool but this is just exaggerated

Feyyaz Balıkçı wow ! Thanks for posting !! Great insight !!
I love it at 2:09 the way Andrew looks at ZCS when he sings "and i'm FUCKED TO DIE in a world of shit"
He reminds me of a younger Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth.
at first i hated the keys, now the song sounds naked with out them, they grow on you, i dig them

@L Alien same dude, same !!
This goes way harder than anything on Oshin. So stoked to see them next week.
How was it?
@@Skiz676 I remember they played this live. So good. They butchered the album version, though.
@@eSuaz nice. I like that, I saw them on the deceiver tour, super tight live, but it was all deceiver songs so yknow 🤷
I love this song because it really encompasses that dreamy/surfy sound that we all love DIIV for but with a little more umph, I can't wait for the new record
AND NOW IM FUCKED TO DIE IN A WORLD OF SHIT
+poetryjesus my exact reaction finding out the european tour has been canceled
I think it sounds perfect now
This song makes me want to mosh pit and stage dive at their next show
Would that be a stagediiv
I literally made that exact joke.
I deleted the comment you're good man

this is the best live performance ever
I never listened to this song both with headphones and all the way through; consequently I wasn't thinking much of this. But now I have - it's AMAZING, I really hope this is their main sound on the new album cause it should be even better than Oshin.
I can't wait for the next album
this is so much better than the album version it's unbelievable. they completely neutered it for the record.

on another note....This is my favorite DIIV song so far. I really can't wait for the new album!
This song is more passionate than I've ever seen Cole sing. I love it!

The only way to be quiet is to be quick
A slow death rite like an innocent fight
Left me choked and white in a patch of light
Feeling like a wick wax drowned and bright
Burned skin like a string black ashes slight
I know I gotta kick but I can’t get sick
I’ll hold you here tight, keep you overnight
And it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick
Keep outta sight while my watch just ticks
I’m trying to keep quiet but I can’t move quick
Drowning in air, light, floating up in flight
Then it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick
You fall
I forced myself to be quiet just to be quick
Lead a slow death rite like an innocent fight
Left me choked and white in a patch of light
Feeling like a wick wax drowned and bright
Burned skin like a string black ashes slight
I know I gotta kick but I can’t get sick
I’ll hold you here tight, keep you overnight
And it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick
But now I’m fucked to die in a world of shit
I’m trying to keep quiet but I can’t move quick
Wings matted with death spilled oil slick
Then it gets too bright, and your body’s a brick
And you fall

I like this new direction they go into
This songs better than the first three singles

diiv is actually the best fucking band omg
Sensational performance. Cole was much more excited than nowadays.
I tabbed this live version of the song.

what pedals do i need for that sound?

feels like the apocalypse OST
Diiv is dope. Put on an awesome show for bonnarooooooooo

Can't believe the negativity on here. This is incredible! I like where they're headed.
I think this version is amazing...

HOW TO ADMIRE THIS BAND THAT IS TO SAY MORE THAN 6 YEARS OF MY LIFE ME GIVE FULL AND LOVE TO MY DEATH ♥
Young man.

this sounds like Sonic Youth
Really good!

this crowd pisses me off id be going insane
he is in the band...

+Mike N I think Sky's song is fantastic. I agree though, the album vocals lose a lot of emotion and the guitar tone is pretty shoddy.
+Mike N i think that incarnate devil was great.
+Robbie Broome its too sad but always in on concert performance it loose the essence , the feeling of the thing wich you cachted the song when you listened first time in studio version/ anyway its no the samething

this song is freaking great. not sure what the complaints are, sounds as good if not better than any song on oshin.

come to brasil
They have a grunge look for sure though! Looks good.
Nice!
I feel like Zac wrote this about his heroin addiction. thats how I relate to it.
All is fucking perfect
Brasil!!!!!!!
You didn’t play bent or incarnate devil at the Wiltern ):
instead of their self-described sound being one part THC two parts MDMA or whatever they said - DIIV is one part MDMA, two parts diacetylmorphine (heroin).
que ricoooooooooo
Congratulations, you have an opinion and made it known.
Maaan what a great performance .. dust is a GREAT song
p.s : Cole is kinda trying too hard with his style u.u .. hahaha at first it was cool but this is just exaggerated
Well said. and they sound 100x better live. (saw em' at the Roo') New album should be sick.

The lead dude is like a mini Thurston Moore.
