25th Anniversary of Toy Story: The Beginning of Toy Story Figures & Toys (Complete History)

- In 1995, Thinkway Toys went to intergalactic heights to create an enormous amount of merchandise at launch! With tandem efforts from Playskool (Mr Potato Head) and James Industries (Slinky Dog), an unforgettable collectible cast was available at retail and in all sizes! Unfortunately for parents the toys just couldn't stay on the shelves!
Why did a small Toronto toy company get the rights to produce Toy Story figures instead of one of the household toy behemoths? What unlikely restaurant would coincidentally come to the rescue after Thinkway's toys were sold out? We will answer these questions and more as we will take a retrospective look back at all toys and figures available from 1995 to early 1998! Happy 25th Anniversary Buzz, Woody and the gang!!

I still have my original 1995 Buzz Lightyear and Woody that were passed down from my older brother, and I cherish them dearly. I even have some of the smaller figures too, like the Karate Chop Buzz and the Kicking Woody figure.
I was the odd kid who choose Hamm and Rex as my first two toy story figures and not Woody or Buzz lol
I just ordered 5 of the 6 orginal 5 in figures from 1995 still sealed, super excited to get them, and to add to my small Toy Story collection. I only have some of the 2019 Toy Story signature collection figures
I have a 1999 Woody and a 1996 Buzz, all in perfect condition, I love Toy Story ❤

@@Toy_story_and_beyond in the UK, we didn’t get the thinkway toys until 1999, with the toy Story 2 packaging because in 1998, we have the Mattel range that’s what first came to the UK in the Mattel range
Great video! Very helpful knowing all the variations and the timeline of it all. You even managed to find some pretty rare images as well!
In case you're curious, most of the rare images came from the Thinkway Toy Story catalog from 1995! Fun fact, I paid a lot for it thinking it was going to be a full catalog. When it arrived it was 2 pages (front and back) haha. Still worth having for this video!

Reminds me of my childhood days.. I had the the 5" figures, complete.. Now I have almost all the movie accurate size, and soon will make my movie room filled with toy story collections

Ah, thank you! While watching these videos, I've been trying to track down the cheap, but still really cool Buzz and Woody that I had as a kid. There they are @ 00:35, on the middle row (Karate Chop Buzz and 'Pointing Finger Draw' Woody). Apparently there were other versions (under them, a Buzz with the Big One rocket, and a Woody with a rattlesnake).

Those minifigures look especially good, Buzz's green was originally super accurate to the films. I'm not sure why they changed it to a more vibrant and saturated green, it doesn't look nearly as good nowadays. Also they clearly based Buzz of the TS1 promos cause he's got the TS3 toymode smile but still 3/4 open eyes. Strange choice, but not as awkward if they were to base it off his TS1/2 toymode faces.
I have Intergaltic Buzz Lightyear. His battery compartment was corroded but I fixed him and now he can talk again :)

i had a few of these items as a kid so nostalgic , had the glow alien , woody and buzz OGs and that mr P from BK :)
I had the original Thinkway toys Buzz Lightyear action figure that was released when the first Toy Story movie came out. It sucked that his wings were too small (and don't have the light green and red blinking lights on the tips) he only said three lines from the movie, he had the incorrect laser sound, and couldn't do the karate chop, he didn't even have the wrist communicator on his arm. You had to buy different Buzz Lightyear figures just to get those features that the original ones didn't have, but not all of them had them. I'm glad the newer Buzz Lightyear toys look and feel more accurate to what his character did in the Toy Story movies than the crappy ones I had when I was a kid.

I'll add this to my list! From researching for the Toy Story 1 video, I didn't really find a whole lot of Toy Story 2 merchandise in old toy magazines. It looked to be 1-2 series from Mattel, along with Thinkway still doing the 12"-14" dolls!

Buzz Lightyear with a disc launcher I think is actually a repaint of Galaxy Protection Unit one. Just without the lights in the neck
