Look I love Roger a bunch. I think what he does is completely astounding. Easily the best probably of all time. This man has revolutionised the way we capture images and continues to do so. However, regail me for a second here. Beyond the single take mastery 1917 was easily not the best looking film of that year. Not just looks but also in service of story. I love 1917 a lot but it honestly feels like the academy is playing catch up and trying to award him for all the times they didn't. For instance hands down Blade Runner 2049 is the best looking film of its year. No contention. But the Lighthouse easily trumps 1917. It was a fantastic use of the medium. Appropriate choice of lighting and lenses to create a feeling and mood that nothing has even come close to doing in recent years. I honestly think even Rodrigo could have won over Roger this year. Even Sher with Joker lensed a period fantastically.
Is it just about looks though? What about the technical ability and ingenuity in making sure the camera could move through those shots and so you never felt like it wasn't anything more than one shot. The logistics on capturing 1917 are on a different level to the other movies...
@Mr Glass Idk if SAMER NA was thinking the same as me but as I said...the only threepeat. Lubezki won 3 consecutive Oscars. Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant.
Cliff Booth Did you watch The Lighthouse? It had one of the most haunting, and eye opening visuals I have EVER seen. I agree 1917 had good visuals too but The Lighthouse was better in my opinion.
Cliff Booth you are acting like 1917 is the first one shot movie and brings something new to the table. Films in one shot have been done before like birdman or victoria. The lighthouse was more deserving for its compact camera lens and beautiful cinematography. It was absolutely stunning
Cliff Booth the lighthouse is one of the most original and fresh ideas I’ve ever seen in a film. 1917 while still being an amazing film didn’t bring anything new to the table besides 1 shot.

@Diego Pisfil Well, I said "for me" in case you didn't read that.
He won 2 Oscars for his cinematography
Blade Runner 2049 and 1917, two Oscar wins for Roger Deakins.
Sir Roger Deakins from now on.
In other years the other movies could have easily won an Oscar too. But in that years they just were all good and 1917 was just ground breaking.
well damn deserved, Deakins skill and art is just beautiful
Imagine if Emmanuel Lubezki gave him that award.
I really wish he had! That would have been a great moment.
The only threepeat. Yeah that woulda been cool to see.
@Mr Glass Idk if SAMER NA was thinking the same as me but as I said...the only threepeat. Lubezki won 3 consecutive Oscars. Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant.
@@toddskivolocki6972 And he was nominated with him for the three years in Prisoners Unbroken Sicario
very much deserved 👏
All these nominees are my favorite cinematographers)))
What a gentleman.
He should have won every nomination he received. He's the best to ever do it.
I really glad he thanked his crew by name. Camera operators and focus pullers don’t get the credit they deserve.
The cinematography is such that it doesn't lets you blink your eye...
1917, Birdman, Saving Private Ryan, etc., are just some of the winning films with fantastic cinematography
Diego Pisfil that’s obvious, man!
and revenant
Blade Runner 2049?
Preferred Dunkirk over Blade Runner 2049
Do you guys consider The Aviator cinematography a masterpiece?
Absolutely well worth the win! That is the most amazing thing about 1917. I noticed it right away. Very awesome long takes.
With the right director and if my script ever gets picked up by a studio, Deakins would be my first choice for DP with Lubezki a close second.
0:38 look at that lineup. taika waititi, the pope, and john wick just chilling. gods among men.
Roger Deakins ❤
I freaking love long takes
What a Cinematography it's the best cinematography in the world 1917 Cinematography deserved it
Dudes the Michael jordan of cinematography
I personally believe The Lighthouse should’ve won this.
Also Midsommar should’ve gotten atleast a nomination.
The Lighthouse is really good but cmon, 1917 has the best cinematography of the last 3 years it is just amazing!
