42:06 Holy crap! AntDude wasn't kidding. One lead level designer and two standard level designers designed this game's levels. And the worst part about this is that the two standard level designers have no experience creating sonic levels, or at least from what I heard from AntDude.
I guess we now know why this game took 4 years to develop: the level designers needed time an practice to make a majority of the levels consist of straight lines.
I think all along, Fist bump was talking about Sonic and Tails. In Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Tails' theme was all about him trying to become more independent, trying to be able to stand for himself, to be strong. And here, we see him realize that, despite how much he's grown, he still can't do this himself.
my biggest complaint is how this is like, 7 levels green hill, death egg, sunset heights, the casino level, metropolis, the eggman stages at the end they just made the same levels but with different names like really, there couldnt be anything else? the only level i thought wasn't too much of the original was the pyramid one in green hill, and space port, but thats it

It logically makes sense as to why infinite's fight was so similar to metal sonic as he projected metal sonic himself, but it was still such a disappointing final fight for a villain with so much buildup.
This game had so much potential, I was hyped when I heard about it and watched the trailers but now having played the game myself and watched it, I’m utterly disappointed. This game could’ve been so much better. Sega, please get your get out of the toilet and look at what you’re doing
Pros about Forces: Beautiful looking game Well developed custom character Boost(at least sonic isn't slow in this one lol) Great music Cons: Too short of stages and the game in general Not a well developed story line(like seriously, when and where did silver get there) Some mechanics such as the jump and homing attack were lacking no super sonic :( This game isn't good nor bad as i'd rate it probably 5.5/10. This is a good step in the right direction towards a better game as some aspects were well executed!
Very good review of the game. I have to say as a player of the Switch version, it's a fun pick-up-and-play game. The short levels are nice to replay on the go, and you feel more involved when in handheld view. I also would like many more levels, and longer ones. I'd pay for DLC level packs since the game's price was affordable. A $10 expansion would be fair, and possibly have levels on par with Sonic Unleashed day stages.

This game had only three level designers. We know they have more level designers. The level designers in this game was one from Lost World, and two new level designers. So what are they hiding, a game for next year. Also, the potential of this happening is high. Look at Generations and Colors. Colors took 2 years, and Generations took 3 years. So here's what I think the development time of this period is. 1 year - Hedgehog Engine 2 3 years - Sonic Forces 4 years - Sonic 2018 Edit: This game... If you look at the credits, there wasn't much people working on this game. This team was made to push another game out before next year or 2019 . I swear.
Sonic Forces is a decent game. It has it issues but it's not all that bad. Wish the levels could be longer but eh. Now let's see what's next for the Blue Blur.

Guys, we need to quit telling Sega what they’re doing wrong and instead focus on the good aspects of the game. If they know what their fans like about this game, maybe they will decide to implement these things into the next few Sonic games.
I’m not saying we should quit altogether, rather create a balance between all of the negative a positive feedback. Of course Forces is not a perfect game, and we need to give Sega insight on what they can do to improve on the next major Sonic title. Let’s be honest - sometimes people in the Sonic fan base tend to focus more on the bad, and criticize games until the point where Sega believe that all of their ideas must be scrapped. For example, Sonic Unleashed was an excellent and well-made Sonic game, and even most Sonic fans accepted this. However, eventually some Sonic fans began to bash it until the point Sega thought they were doing something wrong, which explains why we haven’t received a Sonic game like Unleashed since then. I’m not implying that you’re one of them, but don’t you see the pattern? Also, it doesn’t help that Sonic Boom was brought into the picture. It is not a necessarily bad game (then again: no video game comes without their flaws), but it threw a lot of continuity issues into the franchise. I completely agree that we should provide helpful feedback on Sonic games - positive or negative - as opposed to bashing Sonic Forces until Sega has no clue what to do next.

You, a normie: ARE YOU GUYS DUMB SONIC GENERATIONS CAN BE COMPLETED IN 1-2 HOURS Me, an intellectual: most of all 24 stages of Forces lasts 2 minutes, while all 18 stages of Gens last 4 to 5 minutes unless you really know what you're doing, or are playing Planet Wisp Act 2. That, coupled with the upwards trending scale of difficulty, means that Generations can last about 4 or 5 hours on your first try going in blind. Not even mentioning the rival and boss fights. Edit: since I didn't count the boss stages for Gens, I might as well not count the ones for Forces
post-buttwave I agree that the boss on colors was better, but I think Forces OST was just way better. It's definitely one of my favorites, only behind unleashed endless possibilities orchestral remixed

Sonic Team: "Nah, it was original. It had different textures and polygons over the original model so it is original. We love to re-use geometry and textures and name it a different name so that is full on original." Forces was a disappointment before it even came out and people figured the story far before it was released which is why i'm not even going to buy it. This belongs with Boom, Lost World and Unleashed were far superior.
Had so much potential, but again it was only supported by the overhype of the first trailer. And yes, Mania had a lot of hype, but I'd say Sonic Mania seemed to have more "hyperhype" than overhype. Not that Mania is perfect or anything, but it sure was better than Forces in many ways, especially in the "quality" over "quantity" department, despite Mania feeling mostly like a New Retro Sonic Generations game. Around 9 greatly designed levels beat more than 29 short and underwhelming ones by a long shot.
It can't have taken that long when the engine is hardly different to the first hedgehog engine aside from providing different dynamic lighting; that wouldn't take 4 years. Considering this game's lead designer is the one who made Lost World and the only other 2 programmers were complete newbies, it makes perfect sense to why this game is so mediocre.
Really, this game could’ve only started development when Sonic Mania did. So a little over a year. The rest of that time was probably spent on the shitty engine, leaving everyone else on the team (art, level design, etc) with nothing to do, thus wasting a TON of money. That’s most likely why the level design is so short.
My biggest let down with the story is the fact that Zavok, Chaos, Metal Sonic, and Shadow basically did nothing. Infinite got a ton of screen time, but his backstory and ending are boring and unsatisfying. I was so excited after the villains trailer, but all those characters were thrown away (Their reason for working together were a huge copout too). None of the characters got a chance to be fleshed out.
Well, yes, i made my first OC back in 2nd grade, he's red, he has those spikes on the forehead like tails, he have yellow eyes, a blue hoodie and black pants, and his name is Ben. I made him on the flipnote app on dsi, i loved animating him. I recolored different sonic pictures so sonic looked like him(thanks to youtube), and i drew him on by hand on paper with colors. Man those days were fun.

Before I actually watched this part of your play through, I actually picked up Sonic Forces myself last weekend and played through the whole game that Saturday night. After playing through all of it I can safely say now that I really like this game, however, it doesn't live up to it's potential. If I were to give it a score from 1-5 I'd actually give Sonic Forces a 4/5. This game has some amazing idea's for the story, the level environments (not design), and just the overall scope of the game but imo it just falls short of not realizing it to it's full potential, classic sonic being in the game bothers me, and this is probably the most linear Sonic game I've ever played. But just because it's linear doesn't mean that I hate it or didn't have fun with it. Hell Unleashed and Colors are my favorites in the series and people have mocked those for being linear. Plus the custom hero was fun to play around with and customize, modern sonic's moveset is good but there are some things missing, and as I said I had a lot of fun with the story. But at the end of the day, Sonic Forces is a very solid game. Mediocre in some places, but overall, very very solid. And for QOTD: This game is where I created my first Sonic OC (if you can call it that). My OC's name is Young Bean the Dynamite aka Young Jet the Hawk (lol). I tried to make him look like Jet and then I put all this other stuff on him like the Jet Set Radio glasses, a gamer cap, shadow's inhibitors, etc.
It made me wonder if the story is actually complete.... Where in the heck did Eggman go and what happened to infinite!? It just feels so incomplete... it left me feeling disappointed as well..I mean all the stuff for a good game is here.. it's just implemented poorly. The levels are too short once you actually get to enjoying the stage it's over. I guess there's only so much that THREE level designers could take on.
My theory is that the Ruby Infinite was using was from Mania, and he was planning on betraying eggman, but let Sonic win to not give it away. I think that the "Phantom Ruby" eggman used at the end was just a prototype, and that Infinite will return when Super Sonic is implemented as an extended story point.
@Jamie Grabow I assume that happened to him.. but I do wish it was implied more into the story. He's just sorta... he gets his butt kicked then suddenly teleports "my planet needs me style" out of there and that's the last we see of him. The episode Shadow DLC did try to give a little bit more depth to him.. Infinite sure does have some self-esteem issues... maybe even some mental issues as well.
@The Awesome I would like to see that. I feel that there is more to Infinite than him being just a dark edge lord.. though there has to be some significance to him getting sent away. I think maybe Eggman might have taken the Phantom Ruby away from Infinite.. but I would have liked to see this. I would enjoy seeing Infinite getting knocked down a few pegs for being a major jerk the entire game.
If Infinite truly died, he would've just blown up or something. I do think the Jackal himself will be alive, but he probably won't have the same powers, or even wear the mask anymore.

ShadwSonic I will agree with you to some extent. Sonic Forces is a game that felt like it 'blueballs' the player. SEGA clearly showing that the fatigue of creating the content for Sonic games in general is depleting. Like 'REALLY' depleting; Sonic Boom was just a prime example how much SEGA showing that distance from sonic in general. If they feel like that and Sonic Forces is just another example of half-hearted creativity, then they need to be supervisors for now on, not the creators of Sonic games anymore.
the problem is that the designers from Colors and Unleashed didn't work on this game, they had only 3 people working on the Level design and all of them were newbies who never worked on a Sonic game. and the director only directed colors and Lost World. No involvement in Generations and Unleashed.

It logically makes sense as to why infinite's fight was so similar to metal sonic as he projected metal sonic himself, but it was still such a disappointing final fight for a villain with so much buildup.

This game had so much potential, I was hyped when I heard about it and watched the trailers but now having played the game myself and watched it, I’m utterly disappointed. This game could’ve been so much better. Sega, please get your get out of the toilet and look at what you’re doing

Very good review of the game. I have to say as a player of the Switch version, it's a fun pick-up-and-play game. The short levels are nice to replay on the go, and you feel more involved when in handheld view. I also would like many more levels, and longer ones. I'd pay for DLC level packs since the game's price was affordable. A $10 expansion would be fair, and possibly have levels on par with Sonic Unleashed day stages.

the episode shadow was too short, and the origin of infinite wasn't really impressive, to me, getting a reality-manipulating jewel sounds awesome, but the story was too short, infinite was originally a mercenary who abandons his "mobian" version of humanity because he couldn't land a hit on shadow (couldn't think of a name for humanity for mobians) and could've been better with longer levels. and use super sonic against the final boss, with the custom character in a golden energy ball (like tails and knuckles were in sonic heroes), and even giving us the choice of using the themes music such as green hill modern or classic if they had that, it would have been better with those. plz tell me your thoughts if you read this.
This game had only three level designers. We know they have more level designers. The level designers in this game was one from Lost World, and two new level designers. So what are they hiding, a game for next year. Also, the potential of this happening is high. Look at Generations and Colors. Colors took 2 years, and Generations took 3 years. So here's what I think the development time of this period is.
1 year - Hedgehog Engine 2
3 years - Sonic Forces
4 years - Sonic 2018
Edit: This game... If you look at the credits, there wasn't much people working on this game. This team was made to push another game out before next year or 2019 . I swear.

I’m not saying we should quit altogether, rather create a balance between all of the negative a positive feedback. Of course Forces is not a perfect game, and we need to give Sega insight on what they can do to improve on the next major Sonic title. Let’s be honest - sometimes people in the Sonic fan base tend to focus more on the bad, and criticize games until the point where Sega believe that all of their ideas must be scrapped. For example, Sonic Unleashed was an excellent and well-made Sonic game, and even most Sonic fans accepted this. However, eventually some Sonic fans began to bash it until the point Sega thought they were doing something wrong, which explains why we haven’t received a Sonic game like Unleashed since then.
I’m not implying that you’re one of them, but don’t you see the pattern? Also, it doesn’t help that Sonic Boom was brought into the picture. It is not a necessarily bad game (then again: no video game comes without their flaws), but it threw a lot of continuity issues into the franchise. I completely agree that we should provide helpful feedback on Sonic games - positive or negative - as opposed to bashing Sonic Forces until Sega has no clue what to do next.

Me, an intellectual: most of all 24 stages of Forces lasts 2 minutes, while all 18 stages of Gens last 4 to 5 minutes unless you really know what you're doing, or are playing Planet Wisp Act 2. That, coupled with the upwards trending scale of difficulty, means that Generations can last about 4 or 5 hours on your first try going in blind. Not even mentioning the rival and boss fights.
Edit: since I didn't count the boss stages for Gens, I might as well not count the ones for Forces

We love to re-use geometry and textures and name it a different name so that is full on original." Forces was a disappointment before it even came out and people figured the story far before it was released which is why i'm not even going to buy it. This belongs with Boom, Lost World and Unleashed were far superior.
Had so much potential, but again it was only supported by the overhype of the first trailer. And yes, Mania had a lot of hype, but I'd say Sonic Mania seemed to have more "hyperhype" than overhype. Not that Mania is perfect or anything, but it sure was better than Forces in many ways, especially in the "quality" over "quantity" department, despite Mania feeling mostly like a New Retro Sonic Generations game.
Around 9 greatly designed levels beat more than 29 short and underwhelming ones by a long shot.

Considering this game's lead designer is the one who made Lost World and the only other 2 programmers were complete newbies, it makes perfect sense to why this game is so mediocre.

Really, this game could’ve only started development when Sonic Mania did. So a little over a year. The rest of that time was probably spent on the shitty engine, leaving everyone else on the team (art, level design, etc) with nothing to do, thus wasting a TON of money. That’s most likely why the level design is so short.

My biggest let down with the story is the fact that Zavok, Chaos, Metal Sonic, and Shadow basically did nothing. Infinite got a ton of screen time, but his backstory and ending are boring and unsatisfying. I was so excited after the villains trailer, but all those characters were thrown away (Their reason for working together were a huge copout too). None of the characters got a chance to be fleshed out.

Well, yes, i made my first OC back in 2nd grade, he's red, he has those spikes on the forehead like tails, he have yellow eyes, a blue hoodie and black pants, and his name is Ben. I made him on the flipnote app on dsi, i loved animating him. I recolored different sonic pictures so sonic looked like him(thanks to youtube), and i drew him on by hand on paper with colors. Man those days were fun.

Before I actually watched this part of your play through, I actually picked up Sonic Forces myself last weekend and played through the whole game that Saturday night. After playing through all of it I can safely say now that I really like this game, however, it doesn't live up to it's potential. If I were to give it a score from 1-5 I'd actually give Sonic Forces a 4/5. This game has some amazing idea's for the story, the level environments (not design), and just the overall scope of the game but imo it just falls short of not realizing it to it's full potential, classic sonic being in the game bothers me, and this is probably the most linear Sonic game I've ever played. But just because it's linear doesn't mean that I hate it or didn't have fun with it. Hell Unleashed and Colors are my favorites in the series and people have mocked those for being linear. Plus the custom hero was fun to play around with and customize, modern sonic's moveset is good but there are some things missing, and as I said I had a lot of fun with the story. But at the end of the day, Sonic Forces is a very solid game. Mediocre in some places, but overall, very very solid.
And for QOTD: This game is where I created my first Sonic OC (if you can call it that). My OC's name is Young Bean the Dynamite aka Young Jet the Hawk (lol). I tried to make him look like Jet and then I put all this other stuff on him like the Jet Set Radio glasses, a gamer cap, shadow's inhibitors, etc.

It just feels so incomplete... it left me feeling disappointed as well..I mean all the stuff for a good game is here.. it's just implemented poorly. The levels are too short once you actually get to enjoying the stage it's over. I guess there's only so much that THREE level designers could take on.
I have no idea where Eggman went, but as for Infinite, he was teleported to Eggman's base and had the Ruby plucked from his chest.
My theory is that the Ruby Infinite was using was from Mania, and he was planning on betraying eggman, but let Sonic win to not give it away. I think that the "Phantom Ruby" eggman used at the end was just a prototype, and that Infinite will return when Super Sonic is implemented as an extended story point.
@Jamie Grabow I assume that happened to him.. but I do wish it was implied more into the story. He's just sorta... he gets his butt kicked then suddenly teleports "my planet needs me style" out of there and that's the last we see of him. The episode Shadow DLC did try to give a little bit more depth to him.. Infinite sure does have some self-esteem issues... maybe even some mental issues as well.
@The Awesome I would like to see that. I feel that there is more to Infinite than him being just a dark edge lord.. though there has to be some significance to him getting sent away. I think maybe Eggman might have taken the Phantom Ruby away from Infinite.. but I would have liked to see this. I would enjoy seeing Infinite getting knocked down a few pegs for being a major jerk the entire game.
If Infinite truly died, he would've just blown up or something. I do think the Jackal himself will be alive, but he probably won't have the same powers, or even wear the mask anymore.

This game seems... unfinished. Not in the "it doesn't tell a complete story" sense, or the "it's buggy" sense, but rather it feels like they realized "aw crap, we're running late again!", remembered to avoid bugs like the plague, and had to cut a ton of theoretical content to make it all work. Shame...
ShadwSonic I will agree with you to some extent. Sonic Forces is a game that felt like it 'blueballs' the player. SEGA clearly showing that the fatigue of creating the content for Sonic games in general is depleting. Like 'REALLY' depleting; Sonic Boom was just a prime example how much SEGA showing that distance from sonic in general.
If they feel like that and Sonic Forces is just another example of half-hearted creativity, then they need to be supervisors for now on, not the creators of Sonic games anymore.
They need to start Hiring new people again.
