BILLBOARD 1. *Sound and Vision by David Bowie #77* (Another high quality Bowie single, this time flirting a bit with Krautrock.) 2. *Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel #68* (A pretty blend of folk and art pop. Especially love the call-and-response feel to the lead vocals and the background.) 3. *Dreams by Fleetwood Mac #1* (They were best in the business at this soft rock sound. So many great little production touches.) 4. *How Deep Is Your Love by Bee Gees #1* (Super smooth ballad that feels like a cross between their disco era and prior sound.) 5. *Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac #10* (Great pop rock anthem. One of those songs I forget how good it is until I hear it.) WILDCARD 1. WINNER: *"Heroes" by David Bowie* (An art rock masterpiece. Love that droning guitar sound.) 2. *Watching the Detectives by Elvis Costello* (Punchy ska/new wave tune at the start of an excellent half decade for him.) 3. *Let Us Go on This Way by The Beach Boys* (I adore the sound of the Love You album in general. This opener feels like a 60s girl group song filtered through layers of moog synth and raw vocals.) 4. *Looking for the Magic by Dwight Twilley Band* (Very cool power pop. The almost staccato vocals on the verses give it a unique touch.) 5. *Like a Hurricane by Neil Young* (Neil using his signature guitar sound in what feels like a worthy cousin of Down By the River and Cowgirl in the Sand.) TOP 10 HM: Southern Girls by Cheap Trick The Chain by Fleetwood Mac Love Is the Answer by Utopia As with '76, I was not blown away by the Billboard depth compared to earlier, but another fun list at the top. I dig that late 70s new wave sheen starting to pop up in spots. WORST TOP 40: Telephone Man by Meri Wilson #18 (An annoying and silly novelty pop song. The vocals on this are especially grating.) WORST Runner Up: Da Doo Run Run by Shaun Cassidy #1

1 Baby Hold On - Eddie Money - More than a wildcard, Jason, it's my favorite 1.5 Baltimore - Randy Newman - Flooded over with emotion - nice, Jason 😢 2 Deacon Blue - Steely Dan - Great pick Kramz 3 Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty 4. Tonight's the Night - Rod Stewart 💋 Spread your winds and let me come inside 4.5 " Dreams" or Go Your own way - Fleetwood Mac - Jason's Love of "Dreams" is right on. 5 Live version of Miracle Man - Elvis Costello Stiff Live Stiff. No one knows it but it's better than on "My aim is true" 6. "I just dont know what to do with myself" (the great Burt Bacharach) - Costello. Live Stiff I'm not Angry (anymore)/ Welcome to the Working Week - Costello My Aim is True 7 Pretty Vacant or Done you no Wrong - Sex Pistols Any order, not important: Dust in the wind - Kansas - I knew a woman who didn't like rock at all but loved this. Even if not "rock" .. I'll take it and take her back as mine if only I could. Heroes - David Bowie and Brian Eno You belong to me - Carly Simon Sound and Vision - David Bowie Running on Empty - Jackson Browne Sentimental Lady or Ebony Eyes - Bob Welch Take that Fleetwood Mac! Easy - The Commodores. A great song.❤ Lovely Day - Billy Withers Only the Good Die Young - Billy Joel. Good song from a cheesy chameleon songwriter who could fit in any century . Graham Parker is the real thing. Lust for Life - Iggy Pop Marquis Moon - Television Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel 😊 ( I truly great song that I dont care to hear) Fool (If You Think It's Over) - Chris Rea Van Morrison and Neil Young on French TV. Will to Live - Neil Young 😊 (salmon swimming upstream to mate and struggle to survive) Richard Hell And The Voidoids. Not sure what song. More research needed Psycho Killer - Talking Heads (tired of this song now) Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan (produced by Nicks and Buckingham) Some Wagnerian Rock song from Meatloaf - "You took the words right out of my mouth" or "2 out of 3 ain't bad". Jungle Love - Steve Miller (a catchy song I actually like from catchy Steve) "Roadrunner" or "Pablo Picasso" - Modern Lovers The Babies - Got the Time is not as good as "Isn't It Time" - Jason wins here but really nobody wins. Jason - also nice pick with Strawberry letter 23 - though I don't like much funk it's a good track and I block out the funk. Songs others hate but I like because of this woman whom I gave up on. I beat her to the punch this time. David Soul - Don't Give Up on Us . Joe's pick of Lynyrd Skynyrd is as weak as my pick of David Soul but it will take years for anyone to understand where I am right. Songs I thought Listo would like before today but I was wrong on 1 out of 3: Movin Out - Billy Joel (dislike it) 😒. Every once in a while I find myself liking Joel but not this. Something from Pink Floyd - Joe comes through? I just like little by Floyd. The Clash - Train in Vain - who doesn't love this song ? I don't after the second listening. Not sure if anyone mentioned the Clash but London Calling is their best but before that there are few songs by them I'd like to hear again.
As usual just 5 or 10 or so wild card favorites. What a year! Wire : Ex LionTamer Kraftwerk : Trans Europe Express Descent into the Maelstrom : Radio Birdman No One Receiving : Brian Eno Sound and Vision : Bowie Lust for Life : Iggy Pop Marquee Moon : Television Pigs : Pink Floyd Sometimes : The Stranglers The Chain : Fleetwood Mac Chromosome Damage : Chrome Ghost Rider : Suicide Street Waves : Pere Ubu I'm Stranded : The Saints Look forward to watching the video.
In a year like this you just cannot catch them all...I had Radio Birdman on my AOTY list, as well as Deniz Tek being my 1992 AOTY winner. Maelstrom is a great song - miles beyond someone's Aerosmith pick...If you want to get the Hard Stuff then go to the real guys. (Yes, that is Wayne Kramer...)
@@roxannewalsh thanks. Not especially fond of Aerosmith but lots of people I know love them. I need to explore more Deniz Tek and Wayne Kramer. I do like LLMF.

Thanks, Kram, for ending my decades-long search for a wingman on my dislike for Margaritaville. He's a zillionaire based on making 10 songs that sound just like that.
1. Nobody Does It Better- Carly Simon 2. Dreams- Fleetwood Mac 3. I Love the Night- Blue Oyster Cult 4. Commando- The Ramones 5. Peg- Steely Dan 6. Take a Chance on Me- ABBA 7. Hey - There's your list - another good one, my friend - well. nobody Does It better was my sixth favorite Bond theme song (and the last of my top tier Bond songs) - i like it alot but didn't really consider it for this year's list - maybe HM - it's a 4.5 star song for me - we talked about Take a Chance on Me - my favorite from "The Album" is One Man, One Woman which made it to my #4 spot this year - like i said, a song with very mature sentiments and just beautiful musically - i like Andrew Gold's Lonely Boy but missed it somehow - probably HM - we both have Calling Occupants as an HM - Holidays in the Sun is my fave from Never Mind . . . but missed my top 10
@@NaughtyVampireGod Hey there friend. I see you gave a mention to Cat with "Schoolyard". The synthesizer on that works surprisingly well. We both have a Ramones Leave Home track. I think that's the best album out of their first three. It was a neat idea for the Carpenters to cover "Occupants". I have yet to hear a Talking Heads album all the way through. Should I start with their first? I forgot about Father Christmas, definitely would have made my HM. "One Man, One Woman" works perfectly at track 3. I was unsure if The Album was 78 but my copy has 77. I always liked the cover. Very 70s. What's your pick for best ABBA album cover?
@@cheapcinemachannel4548 A different sound from Cat Stevens for sure . . nice music video as well (from the early days of music videos) . . very close to the end of Cat's first life here . . I believe Occupants is the only Carpenters song on my lists (I totally agree that it was an excellent cover choice) . . I notice the Boys and several commenters mention the Carpenters quite a bit, particularly during the early 70's . . Looks like ABBA: The Album was released in December of 1977 in Sweden but not until the following month/year in UK (not sure about US) . . since it was released in the band's home country in 1977, then that's good enough for me, although I'm sure in reality most folks at the time didn't get their hands on it until the following year . . not to digress but that is sometimes a question as to when exactly a particular album was released . . during the favorite album series there was a big controversy as to whether The Pretenders debut was released in 1979 or 1980 . . so it goes . . Anyway - yeah - Talking Heads - If you start with the very first TH album you might find some songs sounding a bit similar (hard core fans would disagree of course) - that's why the closer Pulled Up basically jumps out and grabs you - u gotta check out that one for sure along with Psycho Killer (the hit) and imo Tentative Decisions - they are an important band and i think it is interesting to see how they evolve so I'd actually recommend you start at the beginning . . oddly, Remain in Light (1980) is probably their most critically acclaimed album but it is my least favorite of theirs - none of their albums ever cracked the top 5 of the year for me but More Songs About Buildings and Food, Fear of Music, Little Creatures, and True Stories are all top 10s in their respective years. . . Oh, yeah. ABBA cover art. Probably my favorite is from The Album. The band seemed to struggle early on with good cover art, but got much better at it from The Album onwards (although I don't like the generic design on their latest) . . one of the interesting things about the "The Album" cover art is that some of the songs are represented (in particular Eagle and Marionette). . . sorry if this reply was too long-winded but you brought up a lot of great points :) BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE: Back to Talking Heads, as far as listening to an entire album straight-thru I'd recommended Fear of Music (1979) for early THs and Little Creatures (1985) for later version of the band (the sound changed, not the band) . . Finally please check out their movie Stop Making Sense . . Later, my friend.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Thanks for the recommendations. Haven't seen the Schoolyard video, I'll have to give it a look. Early music videos often have a real charm about them. Stop Making Sense...seems like I should have seen that by now. It always shows up in best concert films lists. I'm just gonna start with Fear Of Music and if I like that I'll work back. Initially thought I'd start with Speaking in Tongues because I was guessing it was the most accessible but I'd rather hear an early one first. Yeah, the later ABBA covers (Super Trouper/Visitors) are cool. More arty. There's a great photo from the Arrival sessions of the band standing outside the helicopter, they should have used that as the cover. Maybe they did in another country. I first saw it in one of John Heaton's videos and it's absolutely fantastic. Finally...going to take a closer look at my copy of The Album.
@@cheapcinemachannel4548 If Fear of Music is not doing it for you after a song or two, I'd jump over to More Songs About Buildings and Food from 1978. Different for sure. Might be a better listen, idk. (Highlight from Fear of Music is Life During Wartime which you are probably familiar with, although my personal fave is Memories Can't Wait.) I also have to recommend the David Bryne mockumentary True Stories (1986) which is absolutely brilliant. Actors such as John Goodman sing the latest Talking Heads songs. (Wild Wild Life is the hit from that one.) Whatever you decide - good luck. * Back to ABBA - yep - they should have went w the photo of them OUTSIDE the helicopter. Much cooler. They look a bit crowded inside the helicopter. (I always thought it was unusual to call your fourth album Arrival - but I suppose they meant arrival on the world stage.) Anyway, it is real good talking music w you and looking forward to further discussions and checking out your lists!

1977 is THE year that resonates with me most, and is no doubt one of the great years for rock music. I became a teenager that year and a lot of these songs really hit home. A slew of worthy candidates and a stellar top 5; Blank Generation-Richard Hell & The Voidoids The Core-Eric Clapton Deacon Blues-Steely Dan Dum Dum Boys-Iggy Pop Hassan I Sabha-Hawkwind Heart to Hang on to-Pete Townshend & Ronnie Lane Holidays in the Sun-Sex Pistols (I'm) Stranded-The Saints King's Lead Hat-Brian Eno Peaches-The Stranglers Pigs(Three Different Ones)-Pink Floyd Pretty Vacant-Sex Pistols Psycho Killer-Talking Heads Running on Empty-Jackson Browne Sheep-Pink Floyd Solsbury Hill-Peter Gabriel Songs From the Wood-Jethro Tull Sonic Reducer-Dead Boys Strange-Wire Venus-Television Watching the Detectives-Elvis Costello White Man in Hammersmith Palais-The Clash Wild in the Streets-Garland Jeffreys Xanadu-Rush You Got That Right-Lynyrd Skynyrd Top 5- 5) Ex-Lion Tamer-Wire; This killer 2:00 min blast of rock n roll energy comes from the Pink Flag album, which everyone should hear at least once. It changed the way I thought about music. 4)She's So Tough-Mink DeVille; No tune can express the lower east side Manhattan vibe in '77 than this blast of attitude. 3)Like a Hurricane-Neil Young; I love the sleepy laid back vibe and the cascading melody, this is brimming with good feeling, reminds of going to the beach in those days ,"baking"in the sun,in more ways than one. 2) April Fool-Ronnie Lane; This just gets me every time, one of the most beautiful songs ever written as far as I'm concerned. 1)Marquee Moon-Television;Quite possibly my favorite song . This just builds and builds until it explodes in the most sublime way imaginable. The twin lead guitar playing of Lloyd and Verlaine gets all the attention, but the drumming by Billy Ficca is some of the best rock drumming you will hear. A perfect rock song to my ears
Totally agree on that top pick and on the comment about Ficca's drumming. That song is top 5 all time for me. FYI - White Man (In Hammersmith...) was released in 1978, so you have a chance to include it next week. It is a top ten song for me.
@@burmajones803 Your right about WMIHP,it was '78. I thought '77 because it was released on the American version of The Clash debut, which came out in '77 in the UK,but '78 in the US. Of course that was not on the UK version. And yes,Marquee Moon is a top 10 all timer for me as well.
I'm glad Kramzer mentioned the "prettiness" of the Ramones. I think they (and a lot of punk bands of the era) have a reputation as being more about attitude and style than craft. But, those first four Ramones albums are incredibly catchy and the production is great.
My favourites for 1977: 01) I Feel Love - Donna Summer 02) Knowing Me Knowing You - ABBA 03) Heroes - David Bowie 04) Stares And Whispers - Renee Geyer 05) The Name Of The Game - ABBA 06) Some Other Time - Alan Parsons Project 07) You Make Loving Fun - Fleetwood Mac 08) My Mistake - Split Enz 09) Hey St Peter - Flash & The Pan 10) Don't Let It Show - Alan Parsons Project
I love 1977!! I have a soft spot for both punk and disco so... Also 'Marquee Moon' from Television might be in my top 5 album ever, so many good songs and those guitars are so pretty! My 1977 top songs : 1. Television - Marquee Moon 2. Donna Summer - I Feel Love 3. David Bowie - Sound and Vision 4. Wire - Ex-Lion Tamer 5. Cerrone - Supernature 6. @@TheAfterglows Yeah, every single track on MM is excellent and among the year’s best. Adventure is still on my shopping list, from what I heard from it and read about it it’s a slight step down from their debut, maybe a difference of 1 star (5 vs. 4). But, in 1992, Call Mr Lee from their comeback album will definitely make my top 5.
5. Golden Age of Leather - Blue Öyster Cult 4. Josie - Steely Dan 3. Try Me - UFO 2. Cat Scratch Fever - Ted Nugent 1. Sinner - Judas Priest I like Kramzérs unexpected number one. My choice would be Joes number one and I think Jasons will win the point from the audience. Interesting notion from Jason about Thin Lizzy and a great choice for the song. Looking at their catalog they are from a typical hardrock band. If you guys ever do a Thin Lizzy Listography I think you and other (none fans) would be surprised over the variatation. Maybe not like The Beatles, Queen or Todd Rundgren but far from AC/DC, Aerosmith, KISS or Iron Maiden. I think Phil Lynott would been great as a soul, pop or funk-guy as well.

@@RandyforRoyals that trio of Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock produced some great music between the three of them, as the Flatlanders and as solo artists.
no matter how good established acts did in 1977, punk had better songs imo. my top 5 features 3 amazing punk songs, a prog epic, and a glam scorcher: 5. "Fear in the Western World" - Ultravox (there's the glam, but it's really a scorcher!) 4. "(I'm) Stranded" - The Saints (they didn't know they were punk, but then Australia didn't know what punk was in '77) 3. "Fool's Overture" - Supertramp (I cannot resist this epic!) 2. "New Rose" - The Damned (for my money, the 1st punk single from the 1st punk LP blows the entire debut albums by the Clash and the Sex Pistols out of the water) 1. "Boredom" - Buzzcocks (favorite lyric of all time: "I'm living in this here movie, but it doesn't move me" thanks Howard Devoto!)

Very good list! Some of your picks (The Only Ones, The Adverts, The Buzzcocks) might appear in my 1978 list since they are from record that release in 78 and I don't always bother to check the singles release dates instead of albums ones.
Hi beetlebum: nice lists. I love X-Ray Spex . . . Germfree Adolescents is possibly my favorite punk album. They will certainly appear somewhere on my 78 list. We got a lot of same artists/different songs going on: The Clash, Elvis Costello, Ramones . . . all good. American Girl was my SOTY for 1976. Television is very well-regarded, but never got into them. Tried . .

I dunno, i just think they are great. "Isn't It Time?" just missed my list. Also, love all the Fleetwood Mac talk, they are a GOAT band, 💯, truly a band who are epically just awesome regardless of the mainstream exposure and radio overplaying ... "Lindsey is an underrated guitarist.." Yes indeed. Also an underrated vocalist and songwriter imo... He's a genius, full stop. And "Dogs" just missed my list, PF ANIMALS is freakin crazy awesome. Good work, Joe. Listography 4ever 🎵🌈🏆💯
My top three is 1. Dogs - Pink Floyd 2. Sound And Vision - David Bowie 3. Bat Out Of Hell - Meat Loaf Those three songs are some of my favourites of all time, awesome video guys!

An internal poll conducted by 'Time' magazine in 1999 selected 'Exodus' as the greatest album of the twentieth century (the runners-up were 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis and the Jimi Hendrix Experience's 'Are You Experienced').

I realized that I don't have much for 1977, but anyway here's my Favorites. Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three different ones) Judas Priest - Sinner Journey - Next Santana - Carnaval Uriah Heep - Firefly (R.I.P John Lawton/Ken Hensley/Lee Kerslake) Styx - Miss America Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station Medley Rush - Xanadu ELO - Turn to Stone Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla Yes - Awaken Steve Miller Band - Jungle Love Kansas - Point of Know Return Scorpions - Sails of Charon UFO - Lights Out Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood Alice Cooper - Road Rats Supertramp - Give a little bit Todd Rundgren's Utopia - Overture: Mountaintop and Sunrise/Communion with the Sun April Wine - Forever for now Motorhead - Motorhead And, Krokus - Highway Song. Edit: George Thorogood and the Destroyers - You got to lose.
1) Heroes - David Bowie (WC). This is a strong contender for greatest song of all time for me. Bowie was on fire in 1977, releasing two classic albums of his own and co-writing and playing on two classic Iggy Pop albums. 2) Silver Springs - Fleetwood Mac (WC). Mick Fleetwood famously gave Stevie Nicks the George Harrison treatment on this and cut it from Rumours since she already met her song quota. I love Lindsey Buckingham's volume swells, and Stevie's vocals are great, especially at the end of the song. 3) Whole Wide World - Wreckless Eric (WC). One of my favorite movie scenes of all time is when Will Ferrell plays this for Maggie Gyllenhaal in Stranger than Fiction. Awesome tune. 4) Lust for Life - Iggy Pop (WC). Hands down, the best drum hook ever, and Iggy's weird lyrics are just the icing on the cake. 5) Rockaway Beach - The Ramones (66). It's a song about taking a bus to the beach, but the Ramones somehow make it cool anyway. Great opening line - "Chewin' out a rhythm on my bubblegum." 6) Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel (68). You've heard it in a million movies, but it's still a beauty. 7) Thunder Island - Jay Ferguson (9). Is it kind of cheesy? Yes, but I still love this Yacht Rocker with ex-Spirit vocalist Jay Ferguson and a cool guitar solo from Joe Walsh. 8) Peg - Steely Dan (11). Michael McDonald provides the most bonkers backing vocals of all time on this bundle of joy. 9) Easy - The Commodores (4). Great fuzz guitar on the solo. "Oooh!" 10) Watching the Detectives - Elvis Costello (WC). A film noir in reggae form. Love it. 1977 is a phenomenal year. Probably the biggest burst of creativity in popular music since 1965. I don't know if it's my favorite year for music, but certainly top 5. None of the Listography crew's choices were on my list, but "Dreams" just missed, so Jason gets my vote.
Another funny thing about that Wreckless Eric song is that Amy Rigby used to play it at her gigs...until one day Eric was in the audience. Not only did they become a pair but also recorded some great albums together (as well as individually).
1. Heroes - David Bowie (probably my #1 of all time) 2. Spider And I - Brian Eno 3. Complete Control - The Clash 4. How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees 5. (The angels wanna wear my) Red Shoes - Elvis Costello 6. Lovely Day - Bill Withers 7. Take A Chance On Me - ABBA 8. Mull Of Kintyre - Wings 9. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac 10. Come On, Come On - Cheap Trick 11. Peg - Steely Dan 12. Got To Give It Up - Marvin Gaye 13. Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel 14. Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town - Talking Heads 15. The Load-Out/Stay - Jackson Browne 16. Strawberry Letter #23 - The Brothers Johnson 17. Sheena Is A Punk Rocker - Ramones 18. Rich Girl - Hall & Oates 19. Dogs - Pink Floyd 20. Float On - The Floaters I agree with Ryan, Jimmy Buffett is the absolute worst ever. Bonus Bowie: 1. Sound + Vision 2. What In The World 3. Sons Of The Silent Age Bonus Eno: 1. King's Lead Hat 2. No One Receiving 3. Ho Renomo (with Cluster)
Rush - Xanadu Elvis - Way Down Heart - Barracuda Eagles - Hotel California Rose Royce - Car Wash Alice Cooper - I never cry Queen - Somebody to love Pink Floyd - Anything from Animals (all very good) Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen There are too many more to list, very good year!
I think this is when UK tastes really move away from US as punk hits big time Here's a top 10 in no order with my choice for best song AC/DC dog eat dog Damned neat neat neat ELO steppin out Elvis Costello less than zero Magazine shot by both sides Peter Gabriel solsbury hill Rush Cygnus X1 Sex Pistols pretty vacant Yes going for the ONE Pat Travers you don't love me My vote for song of the year would be The Clash - Complete Control. Just blows my head off!!
One of the best years for music ever. I’ve had to make a TON of painful cuts! Billboard: 1. Fleetwood Mac - You Make Loving Fun 2. Bee Gees - More Than a Woman (wanted to get How Deep is Your Love on here as well!) 3. Marvin Gaye - Got to Give it Up Pt. 1 (fuck you, Robin Thicke.) 4. Heart - Barracuda (I’m with Joe, I’ve always loved this song!) 5. Andy Gibb - (Love is) Thicker Than Water Wildcard: 2. Suicide - Ghost Rider 3. Television - Venus 4. Suicide - Cheree 5. Donna Summer - I Feel Love Worst SOTY: Joe Tex - Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman) (it’s right there in the title, you already know why it’s awful.) BEST SOTY: David Bowie - Heroes (my second favorite song of ALL TIME.)
"Dreams" is the song of the year and one of Stevie Nicks best songs as well. Jason nails it on this one. Honorable: Heroes- Bowie, Barracuda- Heart. And I gotta get some punk in there- I'm So Bored with the USA by The Clash. One of the best debuts albums of all time.
01. Donna Summer - I Feel Love 02. Yoshiko Sai - Aoi Garasutama 03. Baka Pygmies - Music for the Buma Dance 04. David Bowie - Sound and Vision 05. Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The UK 06. Willie Colón - Camino al barrio 07. Ryo Fukui - Early Summer 08. Peter Tosh - Get Up, Stand Up 09. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - American Girl 10. Los Panchos - Si Tu Me Dices Ven 11. Idris Muhammad - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This 12. Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three Different Ones)
I've been mostly putting my billboard picks in the year they peaked, so I'm lagging some of their picks by a year. I hate to say I only know "Dreams" among the SOTY picks. I doubt I'm gonna like either the Aerosmith or Pink Floyd better, so I'll go for Jason's mainstream but good pick. It Keeps You Running-The Doobie Brothers-billboard #37 Year of the Cat-Al Stewart-billboard #8 Songbird-Fleetwood Mac-Wild Card Fly Like An Eagle-Steve Miller-billboard #2 Lonely Boy-Andrew Gold-billboard #7 I Wish-Stevie Wonder-billboard #1 Anarchy in the UK-Sex Pistols-Wild Card Allison-Elvis Costello-Wild Card Dancing Queen-ABBA-billboard #1 Night Moves-Bob Seger-billboard #4 Worst Song: Disco Lucy (I Love Lucy Theme) - Wilton Place Street Band
Lots of good picks . Mine , in order of preference : Solsbury Hill : Peter Gabriel Sneaky Feelings : Elvis Costello Vienna : Billy Joel. ( for my money , the best thing on that album ) Songbird : Fleetwood Mac Turn of the Century : Yes Honourable Mentions : Home at Last : Steely Dan Dust in the Wind : Kansas Sweet Gene Vincent : Ian Dury & The Blockheads ( and , of course , Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll ) Cheers !!

A great year for classic rock but you have to dig a bit deeper than before for it all: 1. Xanadu - Rush 2. Love to Love - UFO 3. Overdose - AC/DC 4. Dogs - Pink Floyd 5. Sinner - Judas Priest 6. Songs from the Wood - Jethro Tull 7. Dream of the Archer - Heart 8. I Never Dreamed - Lynyrd Skynyrd 9. The Sails of Charon - Scorpions 10. It's Late - Queen 11. Soldier of Fortune - Thin Lizzy 12. Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac 13. Aja - Steely Dan 14. Sleepwalker - The Kinks 15. Two Out of Three 'Aint Bad - Meatloaf All in the year of punk. Don't get me wrong, I like it in small doses and "Never Mind the Bollocks" really rocks, but all that preaching and shouting becomes wearisome and the limits of the music gets boring after a bit, doesn't it?
My Top 10: 1. PINK FLOYD ´´Dogs´´ 2. SUPERTRAMP ´´Fool´s Overture´´ 3. DAVID BOWIE ´´Heroes´´ 4. MEAT LOAF ´´Bat Out Of Hell´´ 5. KANSAS ´´Paradox´´ 6. QUEEN ´´Spread Your Wings´´ 7. Joe gets my vote on this one...animals is my favourite pink floyd album...I would have chosen dogs by a hair...but sheep is phenomenal as well...the whole album is only 5 tracks without a weak moment...probably my album of the year for that year...rumors is great and all..but I was bombarded by all those singles as a child to the point that there was no escaping it on the radio...so maybe that hurts it a bit for me . And thank you most importantly for putting the dagger to you light up my life...fun one guys...cheers

You said it Gene. I know Kramzer loves the 80s but for me after about 86- they were awful and I was there. 90s not much better but things pick up again in the new millennia.
Completely agree. Dreams is an all-time great. Production is insane. Performances are rock-solid. Just an amazing song. Blows everything else on that album out of the water and there's a ton of great material on that thing.
In Britain, this is famous as the year of punk, when "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols nearly got to number 1 during the Queen's Silver Jubilee despite being banned by the BBC. No actual punk on my list, although the Pistol's Pretty Vacant and No More Heroes by The Stranglers came pretty close, but I do have one slice of American New Wave. At the other end of the scale, I have my favourite Bond theme and Rita Coolidge's cover of a Boz Scaggs song (3 singles from Silk Degrees were near misses for me in 76/77). I make no apologies for including a cover of a song that featured in my 1964 list: Heroes - David Bowie We're all Alone - Rita Coolidge Hotel California - The Eagles Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel Native New Yorker - Odyssey She's not there - Santana Nobody does it better - Carly Simon Marquee Moon - Television Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder Wonderous Stories - Yes Native New Yorker was Odyssey's only pop hit in their native US, but the first of so many UK hits that I believe the current version of the group is based over here. PS - I forgot to make an honourable mention for I Remember Yesterday by Donna Summer. It came fairly close to making my top 10 and it was the first single I ever owned as my sister bought it for me for my 10th birthday (I still have it).
1977 is one of strongest years in music history! A lot of amazing albums this year, and songs as well. The charts are way behind the Wildcards though. 10 different artists! I think that’s a first for me. (Honourable Mentions: Steely Dan - Black Cow, Billy Joel - Only the Good Die Young, Television - Venus, The Beach Boys - Let’s Put Our Hearts Together) Charting Songs: 5. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way 4. Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son 3. Eagles - Hotel California [I wrote about this song before. Borrows a good bit from Jethro Tull’s ‘We Used To Know’. It’s okay though, good enough to make my charting list.] 2. Queen - We Are The Champions 1. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill [Peter Gabriel > Phil Collins] Wildcards: 5. Devo - Mongoloid 4. Talking Heads - Don’t Worry About The Government 3. Kraftwerk - Spiegelsaal 2. The Beach Boys - I’ll Bet He’s Nice SONG OF THE YEAR 1977: Jethro Tull - Velvet Green [Jethro Tull’s true masterpiece. Overlooked by many. One of the best songs ever written.]
I am all for Jethro Tull and Velvet Green surely is a good song. Not overlooked. My favourite from the 1977 album is Fire at Midnight, just 2 1/2 minutes that sums up the band perfectly, I love it just like those short interludes from Aqualung.
@@roxannewalsh I'm with you Roxanne....I chose Fire after Midnight from that album. For me though I don't get the love for the record ... It's not in my top 10 Tull...
@@threestringsomg I have always considered Songs From the Wood as the first part of a trilogy (+ Heavy Horses + Stormwatch) about man's exploit of nature, industrialization and the resulting problems etc. Fits with Ian Anderson's interest in agriculture and him being an early environmental warning voice. In this context, it may be the weakest of the three but still very good Tull.

Missed 1976, as it was a very busy weekend; will have to go back and do it, as there are a few cuts from there I must honor with my rankings. This year was very tough - some big time gems excluded. 10. Wire - "Ex Lion Tamer" - I love me some Wire. This single song inspired an entire subgenre (American hardcore), but Wire had moved on from it before the world could blink. 9. Peter Gabriel - "Solisbury Hill" - He was still an idiot in my book for leaving the best band of the early '70s (with the Stones petering out), but at least he wrote a masterpiece to justify his decision. 8. Judas Priest - "Dissident Aggressor" - A whole new level of heavy. Punks, eat your hearts out. 7. Rush - "Xanadu" - Almost forgot this one, which would have been tragic. Perhaps the height of their prog magic. 6. Ultravox! - "Hiroshima Mon Amour" - If this song didn't inspire the entire post-punk movement, it should have. Outside, of course, from the artist who occupies the top two spots on my list for this year. 5. The Bee Gees - "How Deep is Your Love" - I have to hang my head in embarrassment at what a cheese ball I am, but I can't deny the love. 4. Television - "Marquee Moon" - The album for which this is the title track inspired pretty much all of the '80s great guitar rock. I disdain people who don't love this stuff, because it's toward the center of my tastes. Then again, after including a cheesy Bee Gees hit, perhaps I oughta shut up about taste. 3. Yes - "Wonderous Stories" - So beautiful. It takes me away like Calgon. 2. David Bowie - "'Heroes'" - Masterpiece. Too bad the album it comes from isn't a little better. 1. David Bowie - "Warszawa" - Love love love it. I don't get critics who bashed side two of Low - it's fantastic, gorgeous, and groundbreaking. My first ten honorable mentions would make this a great year if they were the top ten. That's how great the year was. 11.The Bee Gees - "Night Fever" 12. The Sex Pistols - "Holidays in the Sun" 13. Judas Priest - "Sinner" 14. AC/DC - "Let There Be Rock" 15. Neil Young - "Like a Hurricane" 16. Television - "Venus" 17. Fleetwood Mac - "The Chain" 18. Fleetwood Mac - "Gold Dust Woman" 19. Elvis Costello - "Watching the Detectives" 20. Peter Gabriel - "Humdrum" Honorable mentions to the honorable mentions: The rest of Low, the rest of Rumours, Brian Eno's "Spider and I," The Sex Pistols' "New York" (their merciless savaging of Johnny Thunders), The Clash's "White Riot," Yes's "Awaken" and "Turn of the Century," Rush's "Closer to the Heart," Kate & Anna McGarrigle's "Go Leave," Emmylou Harris's "Pancho and Lefty," Steely Dan's "Aja," and Pink Floyd's "Dogs."
1977 Hot 100 Picks Dancing Queen. ABBA Hotel California. Eagles Somebody to Love. Queen Walk this Way. Aerosmith Go Your Own Way. Fleetwood Mac Year of the Cat. Al Stewart Wildcards By this River. Graham Parker & The Rumour I Never Talk to Strangers. Tom Waits
HI FRAN. Another strong list. (Check out my picks if you get a chance.) I actually had a few of the these picks in 76 (Queen; Eagles; Al Stewart). I've been trying to go with year of album release - but other people go with year of single release. it's all good. We have a lot of same artist/different song stuff going on. :) That Leonard Cohen song is a hidden gem. I had Memories as my pick from that album but just missed the HM cut. The Stranglers is a band I need to get more familiar with . . .
HM - Heart - Barracuda, Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get it Right, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Breakdown, New Riders of the Purple Sage - Red Hot Women and Ice Cold Beer, Jam - In the City 5. Damned - New Rose (This marks the arrival of Punk, great single from a great band, who were much more than just punks as they would prove as they evolved.) 4. Third World - 96° in the Shade (They were never reggae purists but an ultra tight band with a lot of energy and great tunes, their first three albums are highly recommended to anyone who wants to look beyond Marley.) 3. Dave Edmunds - I Knew the Bride (Nick Lowe's answer to Chuck Berry's You Never Can Tell.) 2. Mink deVille - Cadillac Walk (Written by the often brilliant Moon Martin and produced by no other than Jack Nitzsche, Willy is razor sharp coolness.) 1. Nite City (Ray Manzarek) - Summer Eyes (This time he was not trying to sing himself...)
Do you intentionally choose less common songs? xD the better! new songs to discover! only know New Rose and chose it for 1976 when it was first released. Couldnt find Nite City on Spotify so will check it on UA-cam, speaking of, just saw The Door Live at The Bowl 68 at the cinema yesterday!
@@UlyssesJonah I leave out songs from the favourite albums that I listed already last year when we had the AOTY series here on Listography, otherwise I would have all the Bowie, Ramones, Television etc. once again. Apart from those I always had those songs that stayed with me through all the years (I turned 18 in 1977) and that I still love - this format is a good way to give them some love.
PS Nite City included Ray Manzarek and Nigel Harrison, who would then join Blondie, and the band released two albums in 1977/78. One was self titled and the other was Golden Days Diamond Nights. I rate the debut at 4 stars and the other at 3,5 mainly due to Manzarek's very good keyboard work on the albums.
10. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill 9. Iggy Pop - The Passenger 8. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer 7. Television - Marquee Moon 6. Suicide - Frankie Teardrop 5. ELO - Turn to Stone 4. Pink Floyd - Dogs 3. David Bowie - Heroes 2. Richard Hell - Blank Generation 1. Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
@@NaughtyVampireGod Definitely not. Blank Generation is a great album and the song is one of my favorites ever. As an album, it’s got nothing on Marquee Moon.
@@afermata949 Ahh okay. Haven't heard Blank Generation album in a while. As I recall my fave song was the openning track Love Comes in Spurts (heh heh heh). My fave from Marquee Moon is Venus. Honestly both of these albums are ones I struggle with. You prefer vocals of Tom or Richard?
@@NaughtyVampireGod I would have to go with Tom. But. They both have fantastic moments. The vocals are actually my least favorite part of Television and the reason it took me a while to fully appreciate Marquee Moon. Now I recognize it as one of the best guitar albums ever.
I was 11 years old in 77. My god I hated Leif Garret. Excellent pick for worst song. You light up my life is also noteworthy, as is Jimmy Buffet. All these are an excellent remedy for nostalgia.
Joe's pick was just naturally on my preconceived list, so an easy win for Joe this week. Although I like Rumours and Dreams a lot. I'm going to ten again this year; 01. Life Goes on - The Kinks 02. Mr Blue Sky - ELO 03. Home at Last - Steely Dan 04. Going For the One - Yes 05. The Chain - Fleetwood Mac 06. Heroes - David Bowie 07. Don't Worry About the Government - Talking Heads 08. Sheep - Pink Floyd 09. Always a Woman - Billy Joel 10. All Revved Up With No Place To Go - Meat Loaf
nice to see All Revved Up there - my third fave from Bat Out of Hell - F- HBO for using that song in their commercials in the 90s - do not research unless you want to be annoyed
A transitional year in many respects, with the classic-rock era giving way to a more pop-inflected idiom, replete with disco and New Wave. The dynamic mix engendered some great and memorable songs. Here are my selections, listed alphabetically by title: --"Bat Out of Hell" by Meat Loaf (my favorite song in Mr. Loaf's catalog, with composer-lyricist Jim Steinman painting a vivid picture of the flame of human life burning brightest at its end) --"Blue Bayou" by Linda Ronstadt (lovely cover of the Roy Orbison classic, this was my late maternal grandfather's favorite song, and I could not fail to include it in any list for 1977) --"Dust in the Wind" by Kansas (my favorite song from this group, a haunting meditation on the vanity of human existence) --"Eagle" by ABBA (very atmospheric, somewhat atypical song from this fine group, one of their most distinctive efforts) --"Heroes" by David Bowie (possibly the most soulful song Bowie ever (co-)crafted, a stirring paean to human endurance and aspiration) --"Ring Out, Solstice Bells" by Jethro Tull (ancient pagan visions from this great progressive group, a perfect song for the winter holidays) --"Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" by Billy Joel (my favorite Joel composition, wonderful storytelling wedded to bright, heartfelt music) --"Strawberry Letter 23" by the Brothers Johnson (magical tones in one of the great R & B songs of the decade) --"Swingtown" by Steve Miller Band (not my favorite from this ensemble, but still a classic, an indelible contribution to the passion for dance that dominated this moment) --"You Make Loving Fun" by Fleetwood Mac (an essential number from this iconic group, showcasing writer McVie in one of her sweetest, most joyous moods)

I think I'm enjoying the Songs of the Year series even more than the Albums of the Year. Having a chance to discover those hidden gems I likely would not have found myself. Luckenbach, Texas is a great song. But so is Strawberry Letter 23 and Isn't It The Time, I even surprised myself by enjoying Sheena is a Punk Rocker. Likely wouldn't have found these songs myself. I'm grateful.
Going to assume (I may be wrong) the Pistols aren’t high on any of your lists (if at all?) but for a bored teenager back in 77’ the arrival of Punk and especially “Never Mind the Bollocks” was a kick up the arse so many of us needed back here in a dreary United Kingdom. For a short while we could all pack away our copies of “Rumours” and “Animals” and revel in a little bit of Anarchy (as long as we were back home for our tea) So I’ll go for the Holy Trinity as my songs of the year “Pretty Vacant” “Holidays in the Sun” “God Save the Queen” As the years passed and Anarchy turned into old age and Apathy, “Rumours” and “Animals” returned to the turntable, but, every once in a while, Rotten, Vicious, Jones and Cook are blasted through my headphones (tinnitus not withstanding) Happy days 🤪
That is the aspect that people who "were not there" maybe cannot understand about 1977. Those who had followed bands like Pink Floyd or Yes or Led Zeppelin over the years were not thrilled by albums like Animals or Going For the One - it was just the same done with better production and bigger stage shows, but felt like treading water. Maybe in hindsight and with much distance one argues that Animals was better than Wish You Were Here...but you rarely hear that from those who grew up with those bands. Punk did not wipe them out. We kept our records still - but it was like a thunderstorm that cleared the air and blew the dust and grease from the speakers. It did not mean that I pricked myself with needles or tore my clothes but I enjoyed the energy that was returned. I always thought that this must have been how people initially heard The Who or The Kinks (for which I was too young in the way that it was about the first music I heard but was too young to know how new this sound was).
My favorite Sex Pistols song is Bodies. Would have made my top 100 of the year. I do like the Sex Pistols more now than I ever did in the past, but I guess you had to be there to really love them. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Most people were quite unaware of it and probably still are. They replaced their worn out copy of Frampton Comes Alive with Rumours in 1977 and then waited until Brothers In Arms was released. This Christmas they cannot await to unwrap Abba's Voyage...
BILLBOARD 5. Movin' Out: Billy Joel 4. You Took the Worlds Right Outta My Mouth: Meat Loaf (It's like a love song written by an alien. Fascinating.) 3. The Pretender: Jackson Browne 2. Heard it in a Love Song: Marshall Tucker Band 1. Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes: Jimmy Buffett WILDCARD 5. Mull of Kintyre: Paul McCartney (I'm no fan of his solo career, but this one is beautiful) 4. Spread Your Wings: Queen 3. I Know a Little: Lynyrd Skynyrd 2. Vienna: Billy Joel WORST: Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I'm a die-hard Springsteen fan, and while this is far from my favorite of his songs, they butcher it beyond recognition. FAVORITE: Scenes from an Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel. Unless you absolutely hate Billy Joel, I can't imagine disliking this one. Three movements, and they're all perfect.
I think Billy Joel is ok. Vienna is an extremely worthy pick for song of the year. However, for whatever reason I don't like Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. I...expect better from a song with this title? Love Italian restaurants. Not crazy about that song. What can I say! Ya love what ya love.

What a great year, and I agree with all mentions of Wire, Television, Bowie, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, The Ramones etc. They were/are all important musicians in my life. Some other stuff. 1. Whole Wide World-Wreckless Eric. Hardly a courting mixtape was made, in my 20's, that didn't have this on it. Glad to say Eric is still making good records. 2. Oh Bondage Up Yours!-X-Ray Spex. A different kind of mixtape. 3. Annie-Townshend and Lane. Ronnie Lane's vocals are heartbreaking. 4. Love Comes In Spurts-Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Quine Quine Quine. 5. Dangerous Rhythm-Ultravox. Love the bass line. The second album, Ha!-Ha!-Ha!, is more complete, but this tune kills me. 6. Congoman-The Congos. From Heart Of The Congos, not only my favorite reggae album but one of my favorites overall. 7. In The City-The Jam 8. Gary Gilmore's Eyes-The Adverts 9. No One's Receiving-Eno. Gotta give it up for Phil Collin's drumming. 10- Mixed Up Girl-Mink DeVille 11. 2,4,6,8 Motorway-Tom Robinson Band 12. Frankie Teardrop-Suicide 13. Southern Girls- Cheap Trick 14. Born To Lose-The Heartbreakers 15. Neat Neat Neat-The Damned And I do really like Rumours, but I feel like I may have heard it enough for one life time. Still in my collection, though.

My top 7 in no specific order: Paul Simon: Slip Slidin' Away Ultravox!: Hiroshima Mon Amour David Bowie: Heroes Fleetwood Mac: Go Your Own Way Donna Summer: I Feel Love Wire: Strange Metro: Criminal World
Kramzer, you got my vote. What a happy surprise! Great underappreciated album with tremendous bass grooves - Aerosmith is (was) one of that rare hard rock bands that master funkiness and syncopation. That track is a great example of that.

Welcome back to Pauls of the Year, where we rank the songs released by everyone's favorite Pauls. This week, we have Paul Simon and Paul McCartney releasing singles. Slip Sliding Away (Simon): 6/10. Imagine your friend is in the hospital. You go to the doctor and ask him what's going on. He says your friend has a rare case of amnesia where the only way for him to get his memories back is to hear "a middling soft rock track." You now know the song to play for him. Girl's School (Wings): 7/10. According to McCartney, part of the basis for Lennon's 5 year hiatus from music was his contention that McCartney wasn't releasing anything worth competing with. Although I really like this, I see what he means. Seaside Woman (Linda w/Wings): 8/10. No reggae song done by the McCartneys has any right to be this good. Soily (Wings): 8/10. This song serves as proof McCartney didn't simply forget about rock. His heaviest song since Helter Skelter? Mull of Kintyre (Wings): 8/10. What a beautiful song, I wish Enya would cover this and then I could bump this up to a 10. B-Side to Seaside (Linda w/Wings): 9/10. I've never heard a song about a song being a B-Side but this sounds better than the a-side even. Genuinely love Linda's vocals, she reminds me of some later singer-songwriters who similarly have a kind of rough around the edges delivery.

BILLBOARD
1. *Sound and Vision by David Bowie #77* (Another high quality Bowie single, this time flirting a bit with Krautrock.)
2. *Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel #68* (A pretty blend of folk and art pop. Especially love the call-and-response feel to the lead vocals and the background.)
3. *Dreams by Fleetwood Mac #1* (They were best in the business at this soft rock sound. So many great little production touches.)
4. *How Deep Is Your Love by Bee Gees #1* (Super smooth ballad that feels like a cross between their disco era and prior sound.)
5. *Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac #10* (Great pop rock anthem. One of those songs I forget how good it is until I hear it.)
WILDCARD
1. WINNER: *"Heroes" by David Bowie* (An art rock masterpiece. Love that droning guitar sound.)
2. *Watching the Detectives by Elvis Costello* (Punchy ska/new wave tune at the start of an excellent half decade for him.)
3. *Let Us Go on This Way by The Beach Boys* (I adore the sound of the Love You album in general. This opener feels like a 60s girl group song filtered through layers of moog synth and raw vocals.)
4. *Looking for the Magic by Dwight Twilley Band* (Very cool power pop. The almost staccato vocals on the verses give it a unique touch.)
5. *Like a Hurricane by Neil Young* (Neil using his signature guitar sound in what feels like a worthy cousin of Down By the River and Cowgirl in the Sand.)
TOP 10 HM:
Southern Girls by Cheap Trick
The Chain by Fleetwood Mac
Love Is the Answer by Utopia
As with '76, I was not blown away by the Billboard depth compared to earlier, but another fun list at the top. I dig that late 70s new wave sheen starting to pop up in spots.
WORST TOP 40: Telephone Man by Meri Wilson #18 (An annoying and silly novelty pop song. The vocals on this are especially grating.)

5 Live version of Miracle Man - Elvis Costello Stiff Live Stiff. No one knows it but it's better than on "My aim is true"
6. "I just dont know what to do with myself" (the great Burt Bacharach) - Costello. Live Stiff
I'm not Angry (anymore)/ Welcome to the Working Week - Costello My Aim is True
7 Pretty Vacant or Done you no Wrong - Sex Pistols
Any order, not important:
Dust in the wind - Kansas - I knew a woman who didn't like rock at all but loved this. Even if not "rock" .. I'll take it and take her back as mine if only I could.
Heroes - David Bowie and Brian Eno
You belong to me - Carly Simon
Sound and Vision - David Bowie
Running on Empty - Jackson Browne
Sentimental Lady or Ebony Eyes - Bob Welch Take that Fleetwood Mac!
Easy - The Commodores. A great song.❤
Lovely Day - Billy Withers
Only the Good Die Young - Billy Joel. Good song from a cheesy chameleon songwriter who could fit in any century . Graham Parker is the real thing.
Lust for Life - Iggy Pop
Marquis Moon - Television
Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel 😊 ( I truly great song that I dont care to hear)
Fool (If You Think It's Over) - Chris Rea
Van Morrison and Neil Young on French TV.
Will to Live - Neil Young 😊 (salmon swimming upstream to mate and struggle to survive)
Richard Hell And The Voidoids. Not sure what song. More research needed
Psycho Killer - Talking Heads (tired of this song now)
Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan (produced by Nicks and Buckingham)
Some Wagnerian Rock song from Meatloaf - "You took the words right out of my mouth" or "2 out of 3 ain't bad".
Jungle Love - Steve Miller (a catchy song I actually like from catchy Steve)
"Roadrunner" or "Pablo Picasso" - Modern Lovers
The Babies - Got the Time is not as good as "Isn't It Time" - Jason wins here but really nobody wins.
Songs I thought Listo would like before today but I was wrong on 1 out of 3:
Movin Out - Billy Joel (dislike it) 😒.

Oooo…I forgot about Wire. Great call! Ex Lion Tamer is ridiculously great!
Very good picks!
@@roxannewalsh thanks. Not especially fond of Aerosmith but lots of people I know love them. I need to explore more Deniz Tek and Wayne Kramer. I do like LLMF.

1977 is THE year that resonates with me most,and is no doubt one of the great years for rock music. I became a teenager that year and a lot of these songs really hit home. A slew of worthy candidates and a stellar top 5;

Top 5-
5) Ex-Lion Tamer-Wire; This killer 2:00 min blast of rock n roll energy comes from the Pink Flag album, which everyone should hear at least once.
We've got a lot of picks in common
But, those first four Ramones albums are incredibly catchy and the production is great.
agree w you eric - I Remember You is on my top 10 for 77
the Ramones were SO needed with the way rock was getting in the 70s!
My favourites for 1977:
01) I Feel Love - Donna Summer
02) Knowing Me Knowing You - ABBA
03) Heroes - David Bowie
04) Stares And Whispers - Renee Geyer
05) The Name Of The Game - ABBA
06) Some Other Time - Alan Parsons Project
07) You Make Loving Fun - Fleetwood Mac
08) My Mistake - Split Enz
09) Hey St Peter - Flash & The Pan
10) Don't Let It Show - Alan Parsons Project
Dreams is gonna crush it. Marquee moon was criminally underrepresented. I'd throw in Elevation or Torn Curtain at the very least haha
Yep. That album is special.
Spot on with those other two.... Elevation rules....the whole album though surely!😂
I love 1977!! I have a soft spot for both punk and disco so... Also 'Marquee Moon' from Television might be in my top 5 album ever, so many good songs and those guitars are so pretty!
My 1977 top songs :
1. Television - Marquee Moon
2. Donna Summer - I Feel Love
3. David Bowie - Sound and Vision
4. Wire - Ex-Lion Tamer
5. Cerrone - Supernature
6. Radio Birdman - Descent Into The Maelstrom
7. The Saints - Messin' With The Kid
8. Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation
9. The Jam - Away With The Numbers
10. Kraftwerk - Trans Europa Express
Nice list! We have the same number one. How can it be anything else, right?
@@beetlebum7760 I hesitated with Venus, Guiding lights, Frictions, Torn Curtains, but at the end it had to be Marquee Moon. Verlaine & Lloyd
I agree with you on your #1 and I have Ex-lion tamer in my top 5 as well. Great list!
This is a good list. Maybe the best list I've seen yet!
5. Golden Age of Leather - Blue Öyster Cult
4. Josie - Steely Dan
3. Try Me - UFO
2. Cat Scratch Fever - Ted Nugent
1. Sinner - Judas Priest
I like Kramzérs unexpected number one.
10.Styx-Grand Illusion
9.Bob Marley-Jammin'
8.Steve Miller Band-Jungle Love
7.Fleetwood Mac-Never Going Back Again
6.Brothers Johnson-Strawberry Letter 23

4. One Love/People Get Ready-Bob Marley and The Wailers
5. Sound And Vision-David Bowie (charted pick)
6. Sir Duke-Stevie Wonder (charted pick)

13. The Things We Do For Love-10cc
14. Rich Girl-Hall & Oates
15. I Wish-Stevie Wonder
Worst Song-Torn Between Two Lovers-Mary MacGregor
Absolutely love that Joe Ely pick. Underappreciated album with great songwriting.
@@burmajones803 I also liked his work with The Flatlanders.
@@RandyforRoyals that trio of Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock produced some great music between the three of them, as the Flatlanders and as solo artists.
no matter how good established acts did in 1977, punk had better songs imo. my top 5 features 3 amazing punk songs, a prog epic, and a glam scorcher:
5. "Fear in the Western World" - Ultravox (there's the glam, but it's really a scorcher!)
4. "(I'm) Stranded" - The Saints (they didn't know they were punk, but then Australia didn't know what punk was in '77)
3. "Fool's Overture" - Supertramp (I cannot resist this epic!)
2. "New Rose" - The Damned (for my money, the 1st punk single from the 1st punk LP blows the entire debut albums by the Clash and the Sex Pistols out of the water)
1. "Boredom" - Buzzcocks (favorite lyric of all time: "I'm living in this here movie, but it doesn't move me" thanks Howard Devoto!)
10. Ramones - Sheena Is a Punk Rocker
9. Neil Young - Like a Hurricane
8. David Bowie - Heroes
7. ABBA - The Name of the Game
6. Billy Joel - Only the Good Die Young
5. Elvis Costello - Welcome to the Working Week
4. Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell
3. Iggy Pop - Tonight
2. Thin Lizzy - Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight)

I dig "Friction".
Pretty impeccable run-down on '77! I would watch your music channel!
Tried . .
Now this is a list that captures the spirit of '77!
"Dreams" is an all-timer perfect pop song. Not even visits to the orthodontist in '77, when I heard this song through the piped-in music every time, could ruin it for me.

Notes: l was psyched to hear Jason and Joe's enthusiasm for The Babys, a personal favorite band for me. Underrated?
My top three is
1. Dogs - Pink Floyd

Jamming, Bob Marley & The Wailers
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Devo
Worst: Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffet
My Album of the Year was ‘Exodus’ by Bob Marley & The Wailers
An internal poll conducted by 'Time' magazine in 1999 selected 'Exodus' as the greatest album of the twentieth century (the runners-up were 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis and the Jimi Hendrix Experience's 'Are You Experienced').
My #1... Heroes - David Bowie

I realized that I don't have much for 1977, but anyway here's my Favorites.
Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three different ones)

Journey - Next
Santana - Carnaval
Uriah Heep - Firefly (R.I.P John Lawton/Ken Hensley/Lee Kerslake)
Styx - Miss America
Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station Medley

April Wine - Forever for now
Motorhead - Motorhead
And, Krokus - Highway Song.
Great opening line - "Chewin' out a rhythm on my bubblegum."
6) Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel (68).
"Oooh!"
10) Watching the Detectives - Elvis Costello (WC).
It's like hypnotizing chickens. Great list.
3 more matches, and Ramones was on the shortlist (admittedly I probably would have gone with Sheena though).
@@TimeToGetAlone I was torn between "Sheena" and "Rockaway Beach". I like them about the same, but I liked "Rockaway Beach" a little better this week
Love Lust For Life too, and I agree the drum part is hooky as all getup, but it really belongs to the Supremes on Can’t Hurry Love.
1. Heroes - David Bowie (probably my #1 of all time)
2. Spider And I - Brian Eno
3. Complete Control - The Clash
4. How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees
5. (The angels wanna wear my) Red Shoes - Elvis Costello
6. Lovely Day - Bill Withers
7. Take A Chance On Me - ABBA
8. Mull Of Kintyre - Wings
9. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
10. Come On, Come On - Cheap Trick
11. Peg - Steely Dan
12. Got To Give It Up - Marvin Gaye
13. Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
14. Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town - Talking Heads
15. The Load-Out/Stay - Jackson Browne
16. Strawberry Letter #23 - The Brothers Johnson
17. Sheena Is A Punk Rocker - Ramones
18. Rich Girl - Hall & Oates
19. Dogs - Pink Floyd
20. Float On - The Floaters
I agree with Ryan, Jimmy Buffett is the absolute worst ever.
Bonus Bowie:
1. Sound + Vision
2. What In The World
3. Sons Of The Silent Age
Bonus Eno:
1. King's Lead Hat
2. No One Receiving
3. Ho Renomo (with Cluster)
Rush - Xanadu
Elvis - Way Down
Heart - Barracuda
Eagles - Hotel California
Rose Royce - Car Wash
Alice Cooper - I never cry
Queen - Somebody to love
Pink Floyd - Anything from Animals (all very good)
Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen
There are too many more to list, very good year!
Loved the variety of the picks, guys..NICE!
OHHH, cant wait for the ELO..... please dont slag them off... I know Jason wont, I saw his previous Listography on ELO :)
I think this is when UK tastes really move away from US as punk hits big time
Here's a top 10 in no order with my choice for best song
AC/DC dog eat dog
Damned neat neat neat
ELO steppin out
Elvis Costello less than zero
Magazine shot by both sides
Peter Gabriel solsbury hill
Rush Cygnus X1
Sex Pistols pretty vacant
Yes going for the ONE
Pat Travers you don't love me
My vote for song of the year would be The Clash - Complete Control. Just blows my head off!!
One of the best years for music ever. I’ve had to make a TON of painful cuts!
Billboard:
1. Fleetwood Mac - You Make Loving Fun
2. Bee Gees - More Than a Woman (wanted to get How Deep is Your Love on here as well!)
3. Marvin Gaye - Got to Give it Up Pt. 1 (fuck you, Robin Thicke.)
4. Heart - Barracuda (I’m with Joe, I’ve always loved this song!)
5. Andy Gibb - (Love is) Thicker Than Water
Wildcard:
2. Suicide - Ghost Rider
3. Television - Venus
4. Suicide - Cheree
5. Donna Summer - I Feel Love
Worst SOTY: Joe Tex - Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman) (it’s right there in the title, you already know why it’s awful.)
BEST SOTY: David Bowie - Heroes (my second favorite song of ALL TIME.)
Good lists fellas. Give me Pigs (Three Different Ones) over Sheep, and Second Hand News over Dreams.
"Players only love you when they're playing", is such a brilliant line. Ouch, Lindsey!
01. Donna Summer - I Feel Love
02. Yoshiko Sai - Aoi Garasutama
03. Baka Pygmies - Music for the Buma Dance
04. David Bowie - Sound and Vision
05. Sex Pistols - Anarchy In The UK
06. Willie Colón - Camino al barrio
07. Ryo Fukui - Early Summer
08. Peter Tosh - Get Up, Stand Up
09. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - American Girl
10. Los Panchos - Si Tu Me Dices Ven
11. Idris Muhammad - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This

I had “Isn’t It Time” & “Strawberry Letter 23” on 45. Gonna have to revisit them.
A great year for classic rock but you have to dig a bit deeper than before for it all:
1. Xanadu - Rush
2. Love to Love - UFO
3. Overdose - AC/DC
4. Dogs - Pink Floyd
5. Sinner - Judas Priest
6. Songs from the Wood - Jethro Tull
7. Dream of the Archer - Heart
8. I Never Dreamed - Lynyrd Skynyrd
9. The Sails of Charon - Scorpions
10. It's Late - Queen
11. Soldier of Fortune - Thin Lizzy
12. Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac
13. Aja - Steely Dan

15. Two Out of Three 'Aint Bad - Meatloaf
All in the year of punk. Don't get me wrong, I like it in small doses and "Never Mind the Bollocks" really rocks, but all that preaching and shouting becomes wearisome and the limits of the music gets boring after a bit, doesn't it?
Great vid

Joe gets my vote on this one...animals is my favourite pink floyd album...I would have chosen dogs by a hair...but sheep is phenomenal as well...the whole album is only 5 tracks without a weak moment...probably my album of the year for that year...rumors is great and all..but I was bombarded by all those singles as a child to the point that there was no escaping it on the radio...so maybe that hurts it a bit for me . And thank you most importantly for putting the dagger to you light up my life...fun one guys...cheers
Draw the Line is an underrated album. Kings and Queens would be my pick, but love The Hand that Feeds for all the reasons stated.

I'm so sad that we're soon going to be looking at the best music in history in our rear view mirrors
I make no apologies for including a cover of a song that featured in my 1964 list:
Heroes - David Bowie
We're all Alone - Rita Coolidge
Hotel California - The Eagles
Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
Native New Yorker - Odyssey
She's not there - Santana
Nobody does it better - Carly Simon
Marquee Moon - Television
Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
Wonderous Stories - Yes
Native New Yorker was Odyssey's only pop hit in their native US, but the first of so many UK hits that I believe the current version of the group is based over here.
PS - I forgot to make an honourable mention for I Remember Yesterday by Donna Summer. It came fairly close to making my top 10 and it was the first single I ever owned as my sister bought it for me for my 10th birthday (I still have it).
I believe it actually did hit #1 and they just left the space blank.
Solsbury Hill should have been on my list too.
You’re so right - get these great songs out there to the masses!! Joe riding a sheep might do it but it might attract the wrong type of listeners!
1977 is one of strongest years in music history! A lot of amazing albums this year, and songs as well. The charts are way behind the Wildcards though. 10 different artists! I think that’s a first for me.
(Honourable Mentions: Steely Dan - Black Cow, Billy Joel - Only the Good Die Young, Television - Venus, The Beach Boys - Let’s Put Our Hearts Together)
Charting Songs:
5. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
4. Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son
3. Eagles - Hotel California [I wrote about this song before. Borrows a good bit from Jethro Tull’s ‘We Used To Know’. It’s okay though, good enough to make my charting list.]
2. Queen - We Are The Champions
1. Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill [Peter Gabriel > Phil Collins]

5. Devo - Mongoloid
4. Talking Heads - Don’t Worry About The Government
3. Kraftwerk - Spiegelsaal
2. The Beach Boys - I’ll Bet He’s Nice
SONG OF THE YEAR 1977: Jethro Tull - Velvet Green [Jethro Tull’s true masterpiece.
@@roxannewalsh Fire at Midnight is good as well. II agree that Jethro Tull are good at making those short songs, like also 'Wond'ring Aloud'.
@@roxannewalsh I'm with you Roxanne....I chose Fire after Midnight from that album. For me though I don't get the love for the record ...
It's not in my top 10 Tull...
Mongoloid!!! What a song ...
Ok as a recompense for ignoring the great Devo I will put on my list....that song is almost Sparks quality

11.The Bee Gees - "Night Fever"
12. The Sex Pistols - "Holidays in the Sun"
13. Judas Priest - "Sinner"
14. AC/DC - "Let There Be Rock"
15. Neil Young - "Like a Hurricane"
16. Television - "Venus"
17. Fleetwood Mac - "The Chain"
18. Fleetwood Mac - "Gold Dust Woman"
19. Elvis Costello - "Watching the Detectives"
20. Peter Gabriel - "Humdrum"
Honorable mentions to the honorable mentions: The rest of Low, the rest of Rumours, Brian Eno's "Spider and I," The Sex Pistols' "New York" (their merciless savaging of Johnny Thunders), The Clash's "White Riot," Yes's "Awaken" and "Turn of the Century," Rush's "Closer to the Heart," Kate & Anna McGarrigle's "Go Leave," Emmylou Harris's "Pancho and Lefty," Steely Dan's "Aja," and Pink Floyd's "Dogs."
You gotta admit though, Tom Verlaine's vocals sound kinda like a goat with its throat slit.
Pancho and Lefty is tremendous. Harris' version is great. Townes' version from Heartworn Highways is even better. What a song!

The Stranglers is a band I need to get more familiar with . . .
HM - Heart - Barracuda, Climax Blues Band - Couldn't Get it Right, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Breakdown, New Riders of the Purple Sage - Red Hot Women and Ice Cold Beer, Jam - In the City
5. Damned - New Rose (This marks the arrival of Punk, great single from a great band, who were much more than just punks as they would prove as they evolved.)
4. Third World - 96° in the Shade (They were never reggae purists but an ultra tight band with a lot of energy and great tunes, their first three albums are highly recommended to anyone who wants to look beyond Marley.)
3. Dave Edmunds - I Knew the Bride (Nick Lowe's answer to Chuck Berry's You Never Can Tell.)
2. Mink deVille - Cadillac Walk (Written by the often brilliant Moon Martin and produced by no other than Jack Nitzsche, Willy is razor sharp coolness.)
1. Nite City (Ray Manzarek) - Summer Eyes (This time he was not trying to sing himself...)
Cadillac Walk! Damn, I overlooked this one and I love it. I wish I could dedicate more time to do a proper research...

9. Iggy Pop - The Passenger
8. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
7. Television - Marquee Moon
6. Suicide - Frankie Teardrop

Blank Generation an interesting choice . . . Do you prefer that album over Marquee Moon?
@@afermata949 yeah - The guitar is also what I like best on Marquee Moon. Really jumps out.

@@NaughtyVampireGod Yes! I loved them. Both in lyrics and melody they are predicting The Smiths and R.E.M.
A transitional year in many respects, with the classic-rock era giving way to a more pop-inflected idiom, replete with disco and New Wave. The dynamic mix engendered some great and memorable songs. Here are my selections, listed alphabetically by title:
--"Bat Out of Hell" by Meat Loaf (my favorite song in Mr. Loaf's catalog, with composer-lyricist Jim Steinman painting a vivid picture of the flame of human life burning brightest at its end)
--"Blue Bayou" by Linda Ronstadt (lovely cover of the Roy Orbison classic, this was my late maternal grandfather's favorite song, and I could not fail to include it in any list for 1977)
--"Dust in the Wind" by Kansas (my favorite song from this group, a haunting meditation on the vanity of human existence)
--"Eagle" by ABBA (very atmospheric, somewhat atypical song from this fine group, one of their most distinctive efforts)
--"Heroes" by David Bowie (possibly the most soulful song Bowie ever (co-)crafted, a stirring paean to human endurance and aspiration)
--"Ring Out, Solstice Bells" by Jethro Tull (ancient pagan visions from this great progressive group, a perfect song for the winter holidays)
--"Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" by Billy Joel (my favorite Joel composition, wonderful storytelling wedded to bright, heartfelt music)
--"Strawberry Letter 23" by the Brothers Johnson (magical tones in one of the great R & B songs of the decade)
--"Swingtown" by Steve Miller Band (not my favorite from this ensemble, but still a classic, an indelible contribution to the passion for dance that dominated this moment)
--"You Make Loving Fun" by Fleetwood Mac (an essential number from this iconic group, showcasing writer McVie in one of her sweetest, most joyous moods)

It's a great series. Thank you, Boys.
For a short while we could all pack away our copies of “Rumours” and “Animals” and revel in a little bit of Anarchy (as long as we were back home for our tea)
So I’ll go for the Holy Trinity as my songs of the year
“Pretty Vacant”
“Holidays in the Sun”
“God Save the Queen”
As the years passed and Anarchy turned into old age and Apathy, “Rumours” and “Animals” returned to the turntable, but, every once in a while, Rotten, Vicious, Jones and Cook are blasted through my headphones (tinnitus not withstanding) Happy days 🤪
- Joe
You 70s people were so spoiled. - Joe

My top 7 in no specific order:
Paul Simon: Slip Slidin' Away
Ultravox!: Hiroshima Mon Amour
David Bowie: Heroes
Fleetwood Mac: Go Your Own Way
Donna Summer: I Feel Love
Wire: Strange
Metro: Criminal World
Love that deep cut selection from Aerosmith nice choice K
Kramzer, you got my vote. What a happy surprise! Great underappreciated album with tremendous bass grooves - Aerosmith is (was) one of that rare hard rock bands that master funkiness and syncopation. That track is a great example of that.
1. THE RUBINOOS I THINK YOU ARE ALONE NOW,2 KANSAS PORTRAIT ( HE KNEW ), 3.PETER GABRIEL SOLBURY HILL, NEIL YOUNG LIKE A HURRRICANE,5. KANSAS DUST IN.THE WIND ,6. BOWIE SOUND AND VISION ,7. NEIL YOUNG THE WILL TO LOVE, 8. KANSAS THE POINT OF KNOW RETURN , 9. BOWIE HEROES ,10. FLEETWOOD MAC DREAMS

"Don't Give Up On Us" - David Soul
