    Most probably a turbo failure, the engine is suffocating at load. At idle, the engine suffers less and only a thin white smoke was to be seen. The best thing, if possible, is to stop the loco soon, to prevent the wearing of the engine (valves gears, etc...). Very good shot in each case.

      EMD fans love saying how GE's are junk, with no proof to back up that claim. GE prime movers are statistically just as reliable as EMD prime movers. The only reason we happen to see more videos of GE prime mover problems, IS BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT MORE GE'S PULLING FREIGHT OUT THERE. As of 2010, GE had 70 percent of the loco market. That number has no doubt shot up even more, since EMD has somehow was unable to get a Tier 4 EPA approved loco on the market for years while GE had Tier 4 units pulling freight for all the major RR's for almost 2 years before EMD was ready. One more thing, since GM sold EMD to Caterpillar in 2005, ask loco crews which they prefer - GE, or EMD. I have heard repeatedly from crews of UP, BNSF, and others, that they much prefer GE's, and that the Caterpillar made EMD's are loud, uncomfortable, and harder on the crews.

    • @tator05
      @tator05 6 років тому

      Howard is right you know! EMD hasn't made a good locomotive in almost 40 years since before the SD50. I hate anything SD60/70/75/80/90. All junk and been around them lots as leaders and trailers on my trains.

    • @hakeemsd70m
      @hakeemsd70m 5 років тому +1

      @@EveryoneIsFightingSomeBattle If EMD's are so terrible like how most GE fanboys claim, why did Norfolk Southern go out of their way to purchase 40 brand-new Tier 3 SD70ACe's? They could have easily bought more Tier 4 GE's instead, but nope, they went with the Tier 3 credits with the fantastic 16-710 prime mover. There's even 10 Tier 4 EMD's on the way for summer 2019.

      Go check the indonesian railway, they have plenty and doing their best to keep them running (in recent news, the railway comp made a deal with wabtec to MRO their locos, to keep them alive till 2030 and even years to come, some of them are built in late 70s)....also their newest locomotives, are still based on u20, 7fdl-8......they seems very love it and cant move on from them.
      But the railfans and expert says that it would hampered the company and its personnel to access and learn new locomotive technology

    Black smoke always:Bad injectors turbo failure.Black smoke at full throttle at low turns: Bad injection spray,AND lazy turbo that doesnnt blow enough amount Air to the chamber.More issues: Compression pressure low or different in the cylinders .If the combustión(ignition)of the fuel is incomplete some Fuel go to outside unburnt With the risk to burn outside (flames,sen in much cases)All these issues loose power AND torque un evidencie at low turns(rpm) this Is the worst condition for a diesel engine if isrequired that give full power when the train climb a mountain,a bridge or other road.thee Max gradients(degrees)Is low(1or 2 degrees. Max this Is variable With the load to pull.

      And?
      Which steps are missing? You do not know? Why, for heavens sake, did you text the world then?
      And, @vector6977
      let me know whether you know how a DE works and - preferable - what the "electric" part has to do with a smoking diesel engine?

    • @pearlyhumbucker9065
      @pearlyhumbucker9065 6 років тому

      Wow.
      You are not better in missing steps than everybody else.....
      And some statements are sheer nonsense. For ex.: "The electric motors always have 100% torque." 100% of what and in which operating condition??
      The torque of an electric motor may be the same over the whole speed range or independent of the number of revolutions, but that is only valid in the case the motor gets the voltage and current it is designed for.
      In case of a malfunctioning prime mover, where the prime mover has only low rpm you wont get the full power out of the generator therefore the voltage at the electro motors is low thus the current that it can draw too. That makes at the end a lower torque than normal.
      Torque and power arent the same. That is not something new. But they are related and dependend.
      You cant get the full power from a starving diesel motor, therefore you cant get full power and - at the end - full torque of that machine´s electro motors either.....

    If this has a 2 stroke diesel engine, it needs the turbo to provide scavenging of the cylinders, without the turbo the engine cant draw its own air and will barely run whilst spewing clouds of diesel smoke, these engines use a gearbox to drive the turbo compressor at idle, once the engine revs up the gearbox disengages and from then on the turbo is spun by the exhaust turbine.

    • @talalzakry
      @talalzakry 4 роки тому +2

      Dear I had to correct you , GeneralElectric never makes a 2 stroke engine in it's whole life time , in fact it's the other way around , EMD used to make the 2stroke engine till being bought by caterpillar , it turned to 4 stroke engines in some years now.
