Fans of petrol engined cars might not get it but they might change their mind if they drove it. That's why we watch your unbiased videos, good to have a different perspective from someone who actually tests the car properly, describes what it's like and doesn't just spout out the same comments like, um, a certain stick-wielding UA-camr! 😉 Haha! Another quality video, please keep 'em coming...
Thanks Matthew, that's very good of you to say. My perspective is "would I buy it" based on everything I know about cars and my needs which will soon include a 30 mile daily commute. Compared to the 4.0T I could afford to run this at least, buying might take a while yet though ;)
Thanks for watching this video! Before commenting please consider that Euro 6 compliant diesels like this one are only marginally worse than petrol when it comes to Nox emissions and are significantly lower producers of Co2 which is arguably more significant seeing as it directly affects the well being of the planet as a whole rather than localised air quality. It's therefore massively cheaper to run an S6 TDI as a company car due to lower Benefit-in-Kind tax and of course fuel bills will be much lower.
Yea but Euro 6 is bullshit... its some Euro made up bull crap. .. something the EU produced ... maybe Brexit will let us escape from this useless determination of NOx emissions
To me the car does everything. Fast, comfortable, economy, looks good, plenty of room & big boot, beautiful interior. If I had the money and wanted an all rounder would be high on my list. Thanks Andrew for another fab video. 👍
Just found your channel, just subscribed. Excellent vid. As an American, I'm somewhat fascinated by a diesel appearing in an S model Audi. Remember, here, in many cases and for many years, the absence of RS models has meant that the S's have been the peak of performance. I have a 16' S6 with the twin turbo V8. Absolutely love it.
The perfect car to have for your road trip Andrew. I'm still not convinced by the fake exhausts, S model or not. I'd prefer Audi to have kept them stealth if the bean counters couldn't justify the extra design and manufacturing costs to make them the genuine article. I think they may well put some buyers off, not necessarily because they look bad, but because of the ribbing owners may get from some folk. Just my opinion of course and it might not cost Audi any sales. For me, at that price-point, this shouldn't even be a discussion point and it should come with factory pipes to compliment the rest of the package (even if only on one side). Quality review as always.
As ever Darren, appreciate the comments. I'm not sure how many owners would watch UA-cam or go to car shows where they will get the mickey taken about the exhaust (no doubt from people with otherwise inferior cars) but would it put me off? Probably or I'd budget to get them sorted, I am sure a twin(twin) exit back box can be designed and the twin genuine tips from S4 TDI deployed here.. Whoever passed the fake tips has damaged all the good work of the people that were responsible for the rest of the car which is a crying shame as it's a fine piece of engineering.
Excellently put Squire. I wasn't thinking so much of the literal Mickey taking, I was thinking that for some it could be more of a mental blocker to purchase. Most car enthusiasts are likely to read the reviews and watch 'the tube' I'd wager, so a prospective buyer will either dismiss it, have plans to undertake the work themselves (as you suggest) or not give a jot in the first place.
Brilliant reviewer. I have an S6 tdi like the above but a saloon. His depictions are spot on and I would like to have seen this before I purchased last September. I like the car but should have researched it more before purchase....very poor stocks of S and RS cars in Ireland this last 2 years so I had to move asap due to rarity. Well done and I will seek out other reviews you have done. Mike in Ireland.
really good video Andrew....the sound of that S6 is fantastic. i think we might be past dieselgate now and the big german manufacturers can show us what they can do with a compression ignition engine. i dont have the funds for a brand new S6...is it better than the petrol?
I've not driven the petrol but would I want to do Frankfurt and back at sub 20 mpg? Plus I think handling is better with less weight over nose and clever quattro system so can't see how it can be a better car TBH. Sales figures say it all.
Doesnt have the soul of a petrol mill sadly... But we have to remember that car companies are in the end, COMPANIES and the point of them is to make as much monetary profit as they can, catering to petrolhead desires is secondary This is a sensible performance car and surely will be a huge seller, certainly more than the previous v8
Thanks Nick, people seem to forget that Audi are here to sell cars, old formula S6 doesn't sell. This isn't ideal but we can't have V8 petrol and low Co2 and low running costs so all things considered it's a far better all rounder.
Electric compressor on this means no need for bi TDI, I think lower Nox and Co2 on this single turbo engine as a result. Cool car that though, especially in Allroad spec
For me, if I was gonna get a c8 a6 - I won't, it's quite big for uk roads I think - I'd get a 55 tfsi e. Seems the best compromise to me, but I feel an a4 or a5 is more appropriate for our narrow roads
Golf R Manual !! how about the DSG?? Price compared to the Golf R? Roll on the Golf R mk8 . I enjoyed the review Andrew and above all the scenery , I was out there last year . Cracking place to drive .
It's a super refined and well insulated 6 cylinder diesel so while there is some diesel noise evident around engine back at slow speeds/idle you honestly barely ever notice it inside. The speaker in exhaust is towards rear so the back is V8 all the time unless in Comfort mode. If you rev it at idle stationary it sounds like a diesel - answer - don't rev it at idle 😁
I already did ... the X5 M50D is a fantastic car, but doing 700k+ on Germanys autobahn plus lots of curves in Swiss Mountains i decided to go for the lower car (weight, wind resistance) which is the S6. Also I had BMWs for the past 10y and needed something else. The interior of the S6 is a class on its own finally drove my decision. 2 weeks and I will get my new S6, curious to see how the car is every day
@@marcdellmann5347 thanks. Got the X5 30D at the mo and always had BMW. Bought the wife a TT recently which has me swaying toward Audi as it’s so good 😂

There should be no issue short of cost. Modern diesels with DPF do no emit smoke so they can have normal tailpipes. I just think the projected sales were so low that Audi couldn't justify a different backbox to 50 TDI model, self fulfilling prophecy as they will sell fewer as a result of this shortcut.
The new s6 is just a sporty tdi50 a6. You say its quicker than a manual golf r like its an achievement when the previous gen s6 would do 0-60 in 4.3 seconds what is over half a second quicker than a manual golf r. Also who is looking at the economy on a sports car its supposed to be smiles per gallon not miles per gallon.
@@JimboJammy you are right it would put a smile on your face but that is only diesel torque and fake v8 engine noises but when the previous gen s6 is much faster with plentiful of torque and REAL v8 engine noises i would go with the previous gen
All S models are just sporty versions of standard cars. OK a bit slower to 60 but it does double the mpg of the old one and I am pretty sure it handles better as well with the sport diff and less weight over the nose, it's not all lose lose y'know. It's got a lot more torque than 4.0T and will be faster in the real world where it really matters. Plus it's better for the environment and (the most important bit) Audi will sell lots more of these, nobody bought the old one for all its supposed brilliance.
@@volkswizard I'm not saying it isnt good I still like it just I like the previous one more. And you are right it will sell more than the previous gen. Can somebody explain why it’s difficult to make quad exhausts for a diesel? Why not just make one side a live exhaust and the other fake 🤷🏻♂️
