I saw Swervedriver in 93 Montreal - they opened for smashing pumpkins- They were sonically so focused - they pulled me into their world - The Pumpkins played a very underwhelming and loose set - Next day I went out and bought Mezcal Head - maybe a top five 90’s album- definitely top ten -
Swervedriver are definitely my Favourite shoegaze band because they along with Catherine wheel had true rock tradition towards there sounds which also fit perfectly with Grunge in the States.
Criminally underrated band. Incredible live performance. I got the Reel to Real Promo EP from a friend who went to an industry event back in 91 and it just blew me away. Adam Franklin is a genius.
I heard ‘Son of Mustang Ford’ on the radio in early 92 and had to get a copy. I don’t think there’s a single bad song on the album. This bands sound is genius. I understand how not everyone gets shoegaze, but I think it’s beautiful. I think Hendrix would have loved it. Never got to see them live at the time, so I’m stoked to find this. Thank you, poster (Scottish Tee Vee) and thank you UA-cam for keeping stuff like this alive.
Very similar to my experience. I heard Rave Down on the radio about that same time and bought the cd. I've been a fan ever since. But unfortunately I also never saw them live. Should have tried harder because I know they toured near my area in the mid 90s.
Raise is so beautiful. ❤️ I only discovered it 2 years ago as a Spotify recommendation. Recently my local bookstore had a vinyl of it on a random display shelf. 🤩 Couldn't miss that opportunity. Mezcal Head is also wonderful imo.
Got into them when Mezcal Head released, but I don't think they ever toured much in the states back then. I was lucky enough though to see them when 99th Dream was released. Awesome show. Love this band!
I'm one of the ever increasing number of kids in the 90s who discovered this band on Road Rash and fell in love. I'm sad I didn't discover them more organically, but if this is the only cliche thing I've done in my life I'll take it.
Did you discover them back IN the 90s? Or you're from the 90s and just discovered them on here? I grew up in the 90s (I'm 46) and I've never even heard of Road Rash until 5 minutes ago 😂
I bought Road Rash in 1998, and I think it came out in 1996. Definitely saw my uncle play it first though, and I was hooked. So yeah, organically found at the right(ish?) time period.
Also remember RR 3D coming out and saw the commercial for it, thinking it was gonna be another awesome grunge music game. I was wrong. All the bands on that weekend rental sucked! Nobody likes sugar ray.
Have never heard of or heard this band perform before, but I likey likey! To me they sound like a blend of the Stone Roses , Rush and the third ingredient I can't quite enumerate yet.
Been a fan since seeing the Mustang Ford video! Saw them on their Mezcal Head tour, I think Medicine was the opener. Saw them again for I wasn’t born to lose you. Absolute Riffs.
I saw them support Curve in manchester SU late 93. I'd never heard of them before, but found myself right up against the barrier in front of Adam. The crush was so much that the barrier got bent to be the shape of the stage, but sonically they put on such an intense show, it was incredible! Lifelong fan since then.
Saw them at the Oxford O2 about 15 years ago or so. and they were amazing ; Rave Down, Son of Mustang Ford etc so good live. Adam is such a talent and like Toshack Highway too (his other music project).
Cool finally seeing Swervedriver play, and from 1993 nonetheless! I discovered them while at the Off Ramp (a grunge venue with a pub in back) in Seattle, and after a show they had the Mezcal Head CD playing on their soundsystem. I don't remember which songs were playing (Duel, Blowin' Cool, or Harry & Maggie? not sure) but I bought the CD. Over here Stateside they weren't really big, didn't get a lot of airplay, more of a word of mouth thing. But it's great seeing what the buzz was really all about.
@@ScottishTeeVee Just to clarify, I'd unfortunately never seen them actually live in person. It was a local band that had been playing at the Off Ramp, and when I hung around the pub afterwards the bartender had the Mezcal Head CD playing over the bar's sound system, and I asked him who the band on the CD were, and he told me about Swervedriver. That's why it's so cool to see a vid like this. It's enough like being there. Thanks again for posting the video.
They did tour the States with the Pumpkins and I think Soundgarden. So they gained a lot of US fans that way. I had heard them in Britain from their first album but later after returning to the US I saw the video for Duel on MTV (120 Minutes), and i was like, ‘okay this is unbelievable time to buy the albums.’
THANK YOU!, one of my all-time favorites, and living in Camden during the time these guys broke, some exiciting times for sure, the best non-Creation band signed to Creation ever, Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this! Sounds fantastic. Been a huge fan for thirty years. my band recorded a new song last week and we inadvertently created an homage to this astounding group.
Adam Franklin plays incredibly difficult guitar parts while soloing. Most guys that do vox typically have easier guitar duties but he's doing arpeggios and all kinds of wild stuff while he's playing. I think it's less obvious because their music isn't "flashy" but it's so intricate.
Oh wow! I was at this show! I flew home to Australia the next day with my ears ringing and mind blown. Spoke with Adam a couple of years later when he toured here and he said he was pretty ill that night :D I think the running order that night was James, The Verve, Swervedriver and Wonder Stuff.
There's the back of my head. ...and again, and again... Great night. Swervedriver, James, Verve and The Wonderstuff. I think James replaced The Lemonheads for some reason.
Thank you Rick ‘Beato’ or whoever the eff pulled this out of the magic shoe gaze hat. The quality is amazing and the Driver’s sound set up and tightness is fantastic! Does anyone have this entire set anywhere or where to find it?!
@@ScottishTeeVee Actually, I think so. Also at the end of the Beato video the singer mentions that he knows of RIck because he would see comments on a bunch of YT videos that said "Beato sent me here".
I feel like I missed the train not even knowing that scene existed back then, I'm discovering some cool stuff 27 years late. Was it really recorded back in the day on a regular VHS? Looks excellent.
Thanks for watching and commenting, so glad you enjoyed this video. Yes it was recorded on standard VHS. But with VHS, if you used a more expensive VCR, you got a better quality recording and if you used good quality tape at SP, then once again you got a slightly better quality of recording. Do take a look over my other recordings, all taken from my videotapes, there's lots of amazing music for you to discover from bands you may never have heard of.

This might be the highest-quality/fidelity 90s swervedriver concert on UA-cam
I think you are probably correct
Yeah we need more
amazing
It is fucking great mate!! And I loved this era of this great shoegaze band, it seems like it was a privilege, to see them back in the day!
The quality is just like ride in Brixton in the 90's! 🤟
Agreed!
Swervedriver are definitely my Favourite shoegaze band because they along with Catherine wheel had true rock tradition towards there sounds which also fit perfectly with Grunge in the States.
Yeah lol, Mezcal Head is basically just psychedelic grunge.
Agreed!
I’ve been getting into Mezcal head out of the blue for the past three weeks. Astounding sound
Criminally underrated band. Incredible live performance. I got the Reel to Real Promo EP from a friend who went to an industry event back in 91 and it just blew me away. Adam Franklin is a genius.
I'm glad you found and enjoyed this video
Still the best band to not get their due. They are your favorite band's favorite band. I hope they tour again here soon.
I remember trying to learn this by ear back in my teens. Only found out recently it’s in a weird tuning, it all makes sense nearly 30 years later 😂
one of the greatest bands ever
I'm glad you found and enjoyed this
P.s. Swervedriver, Acetone, Verve & Pumpkins all killed it in ‘92 & ‘93. Oh, sh*t, almost forgot Pavement & Polvo!
Holy shitballs. It simply doesn't get any better than this

My 23rd birthday! What a fantastic video.
Happy birthday!

This is what makes you tube great. Thank you for this!
Holy fuck, that is the best version of Duel...EVER! Best band lineup and damn do they miss Jez on drums.

One of the loudest bands I’ve ever heard live supporting curve at Brixton academy when mescal head came out
That must’ve been a great show. Curve was great at that time, too.
I got to see them at the Troubadour in LA about ‘98? . Such a good show , up close . What a sound!
Been a fan since seeing the Mustang Ford video! Saw them on their Mezcal Head tour, I think Medicine was the opener. Saw them again for I wasn’t born to lose you. Absolute Riffs.
Love this band and am more than irritated that I didn’t find them sooner. So damn good! Great upload! Thank you!

Awesome performance. Very good quality upload!
I'm glad you enjoyed it🙂
Adam franklin really improved as a singer as he got older
I come back to this footage a lot. So good. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching multiple times Chris
had this on shitty vhs lost it years ago obviously - great to see again

Had the pleasure of seeing them open up for Failure two years ago. My god. Still so good.

SWERVEDRIVER is in my top ten of the 90s, Duel is one of the most fantastic songs of that time.
Pure genius. I dare someone to say otherwise. 🤘

Glad you enjoyed this Glenn. Thanks for commenting, I always enjoy reading why people watched the videos.
Creation was the best label of the 80s/90s! It's too bad the label collapsed. But, cocaine habits will ruin a record label.
they are so good but also so committed to cool shit while sounding better than what you've been thinking of...
What a great rock band. Keep it alive.

Spot on with the running order. I was at this too, filmed for the late night show The Beat
Saw them in 93
Wasn’t really into them at the time, was more into The Wonderstuff etc but now I could listen to Duel on a permanent loop 👍🏻
coool. thank you
No problem!
There's the back of my head. ...and again, and again...
Great night. Swervedriver, James, Verve and The Wonderstuff. I think James replaced The Lemonheads for some reason.
i think i finally understand swervedriverrrrrr
I know how you feel, it took me a while as well, but once you get it..

underrated asf!!
Great guitars
i fucking love this song.
i love this so fucking much
American feel with british shoegaze on all their albums, I love em
subscribed
Thank you
Wish adam’s guitar was higher in the mix. All those hypnotic arpeggios get lost in the wash.
Wall of sound is a trademark of shoegaze LOL I hate to use lingo but I think they wanted to sound washed out.
Road rash newstalgia rip kegish my friend 2011 2018 man😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I know these guys are from the UK but their sound is SO 1990s Seattle..
Glad you enjoyed this Nick
Think this was a itv programme called 'The Beat' Gary Crowley introduces the band
It was and it was on so late, like 3am, that I just used to record the full show and I kept many of them, now I'm sharing them
Rick Beato sent me here!
I guess he used some of this clip in his latest video?
@@ScottishTeeVee Actually, I think so. Also at the end of the Beato video the singer mentions that he knows of RIck because he would see comments on a bunch of YT videos that said "Beato sent me here".
Road rash sent me here, in the 90s
🙄
I sent Rick Beato here!😂 Obviously, I jest, but I've been a fan since the beginning.
I was there
Was this at one of the multiple performance events, where the show had 5 or six bands playing and being recorded for the TV show?
road rash 😍
Foda!

Jez always messed up Sandblasted. Far too much “Manchester beat”, takes away from the original driving bass drum of Graham’s.
Swervedriver= If the Counting Crows wrote good songs
