Hello, at 1:05 I see you flush the two smaller cooler lines with flush. I know it doesn't probably doesn't work as well but, can I use my nitrogen bottle with pressure and blow those lines out or would I hurt something internal?
Nice vid! I wish my 2010 Altima had a trans drain plug. Had to drop the pan. Replaced the mesh filter but it looked good at 68k miles. Also replaced the small fine synthetic filter that is attached to the side of the trans housing. It also looked good. Used 12 qrts NS2 to flush. Added an oil cooler to hopefully mitigate any problems.
@@JavsGarage I just watched your other vid about measuring without a temp diag tool. For fun I may check temp with temp gun on trans pan and then check dip stick. Do you think the 2010 dipstick is accurate? I did not use it at all for the drain and fill. I measured exactly what was taken out and prefilled the oil cooler to try and make it the same amount as factory fill.
@@JavsGarage Curious, have you ever checked the cvt fluid level per the procedure in your vid with temp reading, then drive the car to full operating temp and check again. Was their a difference in the fluid level on the dip stick when comparing the two procedures?

Jav, is there a filter inside the pan? Any reason I should pull the pan, anything to clean inside? I bought my 2013 Pathfinder used, it has 130K miles. I do not know the service history. Any help is appreciated, thank you.
The filter is only changed during a cvt rebuild as far as dealership is concerned. Not sure if they sell the filter separately but it's not needed with a basic drain and fill service

Question we’re did you get the copper gasket? And the cooler flush? Also what’s the difference between the cvt oil in the black bottle and the ones in the white ones...they both say ns3 on them but the black ones are substantially cheaper 60 dollars for five but 100 dollars for five white ones... also I talked to the dealership and they say the trans needs a fluid change every 30,000 miles mine is a 2017 Altima with 46000 miles and the car fax does not show that it’s been changed anyway should I be worried... the dealership wants 260 to do the job... seems awfully steep for something so simple and I asked what they do and he says they just change the fluid and use a special tool on the bottom to get the fluid level correct....I assume that’s the same thing as you getting the trans to temperature than pulling tell it drains the way you showed on the video I assume... and finally one more thing since the car has a power train warranty till 60 thousand miles should I just bite the bullet and and pay them 160 in labor for something so simple I’ve changed Tran fluids on other cars and this seems much easier seeing you don’t have to pull the pan however don’t want any excuse regarding the warranty..your expertise in all these regards would be greatly appreciated. I’ll sucribe to your page or whatever if you have one
The Cooper washer you can get at the dealership or on Amazon. I think they're like $6 for a pack of 10. You can use those for the engine 14mm oil plug and the 19mm trans plug. And as far as the cvt fluid goes I'm only aware of the black NS3 bottles from Nissan. The white bottles from Nissan are NS2 and should not be used for your year vehicle. I'll highly recommend staying with Nissan fluids and not going with aftermarket universal fluid. And as per the cvt fluid service at the dealership I know it's expensive for such a easy job but at least if anything goes wrong they'll be responsible for it. I've seen them warranty transmissions that are out of warranty just because the customer kept up with the maintenance at the dealer. So it really comes down to having them do it and shaving that safe piece of mind or saving a couple bucks and doing it yourself. Hope that helped clear things up
Yeah your probably right .. thanks um why didn’t he mention the cooler flush tho... and he sails it would cost me a hundred just for the fluid the one in the black is only sixty I don’t any way I guess all use the rip off dealership this one time.,. Thank for the advice
Jays I have searched UA-cam for days this is easily the best video on changing the transmission fluid. 2016 Alt with 70k., First time being done. Everything I need is in your links?
do you skip the cooler flush if you don't have external cooler? does nissan murano 2014 have an external cooler? do you also drain the cooler and transmission lines regardless of flushing cooler or not?
Hoping someone can respond! Was thinking about replacing my OEM cooler shown at 1:05. On my 2016 Altima S, those two small cooler hoses, yeah, those two are connected to each end. So the small lines meet each other at each end and the two bigger ones are to the radiator. Is something wrong !? This has me trippin'.
The big lines are for the coolant. The small ones going into each other probably means there's no external cvt cooler. That's there so one can be installed. Not sure why they don't include them from factory
@@JavsGarage If I were to install a cooler similar to the way the radiator looks, would I have to route the coolant lines? The the two transmission fluid lines that link each other? Also, would you happen to know which is inlet and outlet? Much appreciated!
I had one question regarding o ring for CVT overflow plug. The field service manual indicates to never re-use o ring. I just did a 2x drain and refill and replaced crush washer for drain plug but want to confirm that I did not under or over fill. Can the overflow plug o ring be re-used?
Hi, my rogue is a 10 qt fill after flush but also thank you so much…while I still had to buy the flush and oil from Nissan, it would’ve been double or more to take to the dealer and I can tell they way they look at me when I come in to order parts that they wish I’d bring it in so they can get me on something they “found” coughbrokeormadeupcough Do you have a link or the ability to make a video for the parking break reassemble, my differential locked up and snapped my Cv joints and the o on me hub bearing which also took out a mount on the backing plate…I took the rotor off and all the pieces fell out I can’t find anyone that’s done it three shops said no we don’t want to take the liability on I need to get it inspected but the parking breaks lines are zip tied to the frame and there’s like 20 springs my head spins thinking I lose one in the sealed bags 😂
how often should i service my 2013 rogue cvt? i have 75K miles now and pretty sure it has never been serviced. is this drain and refill the only service required?
I had a cvt service done at Nissan yesterday. Why when I just checked the fluid it doesn’t look blue when I wipe on a clean white paper towel it looks almost clear? I wish I had saw YOUR video! I kept finding other random UA-camrs. I’m a DIY kinda guy because I like to know it gets done properly. Guess in 40k miles I’ll know what to do!
Same process Minus the the removal of the 14mm level bolt at the end. That cvt should have a dipstick . Remove the dipstick and see if it has the long measuring stick
I just want to make sure I understand. 2016 versa note. I have that special overfill tube, isntead of the 14mm bolt thing. 1. Does the cvt fluid have to be at temp to drain? 2. Pull plug. 3. Pull overflow plug. 4. Drain. 5. Replace overflow plug. 5b. Replace plug. 6. Remove uptop cap to filling line (unsure what to call it). 7. Fill more than it required (think it's like 2.75quarts). 8. start engine, and get to temp. 9. pull plug on bottom again. 10. let it drain until dribbling slightly out, replace plug.
Yes bring it to temperature 112°+ And go through the gears. Yes remove the 19mm and the Allen bolt. Let it drain and reinstall the Allen and 19mm . Fill cvt,let it run and then remove just the 19mm for the self level
@@JavsGarage Right, awesome thanks. Repair manual says 3 liters (about 3.1 quarts), is 4 enough? Also manual says flush it basically 3 times, fill drain, fill drain, fill (Although it does specify the exact amount of 3.1 quarts). Is just drain/fill ok? That oil is expensive. Now I know why Nissan wants 300+ to do the job.
I would try and Google it If you have a cooler with the extra smaller lines you have an external cooler if not you don't have it just coolant lines. Not all cvts have trans coolers. They make a kit that runs roughly$500-600
So this procedure is done while the vehicle is running on both drainage l, or just the second procedure running ? I want to do this because my 17 rogue is slipping and kicking gear?
I have an Altima 2015 that seems to be slipping/jumping at lower rpm. No CEL on currently, will this fluid change help that or is it to late? Do these trans usually throw a CEL when they go bad?

Hi Jav's Garage, i would appreciate if you can confirm, I just came back after fluid change altima 2014 2.5 and the mechanic leveled the fluid from right side of cvt pan, little above there is also a bolt on the side. He did not open 14 bolt which is in video to level. Now i am confused if he understand this or may be level is not correct still. Are you aware of any leveling bolt up on the right side of the pan? (the side towards driver-side wheel)
@@JavsGarage Thanks for reply. Yes he drained from 19mm. But for leveling he used some other bolt above pan on wheel side instead of 14mm. I will now try to level again myself using 14mm.
Hey I just did my cvt fluid change on my altima 2015 today, and I measured about 5 1/2 quarts of old oil, and put in 5 quarts and and when I did the leveling about 1/2 to 1 quart came out, Is that normal ? I was just wondering?
Hey bro I just did a drain and fill on my wife’s 2019 rogue SL. I let it drain for about 30 min. Charged out the copper crush washer. I measured and I drained out a tad over 4qts and filled it with 4qts of new ns3 fluid from the dealer. Should I put more in or I should be good? I don’t want to overfill and possibly go into limp mode.
what are the symptoms of a CVT going out. just bought a 17 with 44k miles and at low speeds to a complete stop it kinda of jerks a bit, happens here and there
The cvt only reads the cvt fluid temp . But after adding the new fluid you have to let the car run for 10-15min so the engine and transmission will be at operating temps. So it wouldn't really matter if the engine is hot or not just the cvt. But in that time frame both should be at operating temps
Hey Rene. I'm having the same issues. When engine is at full operating temp CVT reads .5 in ABOVE the hash marks in my 14 Murano. It's frustrating we can't get an answer
For a company with so many cvt issues you would think that a solid objective line on a dipstick would be alot more telling for fluid level than a subjective width of a stream running out of the transmission. I appreciate the video and the time it took to make it and this is no reflection on you personally, but nissan keeps f'ing up in my opinion and Ive owned 3 of them. A 97 sentra an 05 frontier and now a 17 pathfinder. Oddly enough the best to worst is also that same order
Thanks for the easy way step by step demo. I have a 2009 Murano second gen, can I use alternative fluid like NS3 instead of NS2 and from different brands like Eneos or other ones?
@@JavsGarage good to know. So any newer well reviewed CVT fluid should be good then. I’ll check for what’s on sale or available in my area. Thanks again!
I'm sure they probably have some but we only used nissan brands because it was a dealership. I'll say do a Google search or looks for reviews on different flush cans / fluids . I just haven't experience with different ones to recommend any unfortunately
I’m planning to do this to my car, for leveling after filling and all does the vehicle have to be running ? I heard that having it warm up for about 15min, and chasing gears should be good ?
I have a nissan sentra 2012, 2L with CVT transmission. 106KLM. Transmission oil never changed. Should I change it before starting ? I bought AMSoil CVTQTC transmission oil . It is ns-2 and ns-3 compatible. it comes with 1 gallon or 4 quarts. Do you think its enough ? If not, can I top it up with the old fluid ? Thank you.
This looks very similar to the procedure for the 2011 Kia Sportage that I've done before. Easier actually, since the fill port isn't buried under hoses and wires and the fluid overflow port isn't way up on the front of the transmission. Thanks.
I think those have an actual dipstick so you would drain and fill until it's between the the 2 dots on the dipstick. Basically like you're checking your engine oil level
I broke the side tab off trying to get that plug out of the tube but the plug itself is OK. Is it likely to come out? I know it was a real pain in the @ss to get it out. Mine is a 2017 and while it has the plug, there is no dipstick attached to it. I do like that there is a tube really. Some manufacturers just want to make everything an expensive pain that some people dread having to get done. To them a root canal without anesthesia seems more fun!! Now that I see how it is supposed to come out I might just order a new cap from some place (not the dealer, I don't want them to know I messed with it).
is the car running while level out action or did you stopped the engine after warm up?..and what if a dont do the cooler flush? its this bad or car will be ok?
The car is running at all times after filling it. Let it warm up and while it's running Remove the 14mm to level it out. And the cooler flush isn't 100% necessary just recommend
@@JavsGarage Hh ok. Quick question.. i took it to the dealer to get an oil change.. they said that its needed a power steering fluid change.. does it it really need a change? Or how often do you need to change it? Every what miles?
Excellent video. I have a 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5 SV with 125,000 k S or 75,000 miles. It runs amazing and superb fuel mileage. Which Altimas have the transmission cooler? Going to get a transmission fluid change while we are in Florida before heading back to Canada.
Thanks for the comment! 🤙 And as far as witch altimas come with the cooler I think are the v6 3.5 if I'm not mistaken. But definitely call up a dealership and give them your vin to see if your trip level or year has one. Or simply check under the hood where the lines go for the cvt
Symbiote215 Had the transmission fluid changed today at Southern441 Nissan in West Palm Beach FL along with engine oil & filter. I watched Tech through the glass and I saw him shifting gears as you did. Billed for 4 quarts of NS-3 at $20.24 each and total for transmission fluid was $209.95 plus tax which I thought was very reasonable. Synthetic oil change and filter only $24.95. I was in and out in 50 minutes, amazing service.
@@GDAMNYTAfter removing the 19mm drain bolt there's a H5 Allen bolt inside that needs to be removed to drain it completely and then reinstalled. But you can always just remove the 10mm bolts on the oil pan and drain it like that but then you'll need a new gasket for the pan. After that it's the same procedure just reinstall the drain plug and add the cvt fluid, set it warm up and remove the 19mm drain plug so it can self level out. I'll try and make a video on these soon
@@mruiz0285 it could be too far gone for a Fluid service to help. Once it starts acting up it's usually too late but I have seen a fluid service make it better. I guess it all depends on miles and how the vehicle is driving
Yes that could work. Anything over 112° will do . When I do them it usually takes about 12-15min to warm up but that also depends on the temperature outside.
@@JavsGarage cool, and this is my first time there shouldn't be a problem if I use the right recommended oil and proper leveling right? Do you know if how much oil is needed for 2014 rogue? It's not in the owners manual. Bcoz it says there to bring the car to nissan dealership for this service.
They take about 4 qts but I always put 4 and a half just to be sure. When you're leveling out the fluid it will correct itself if it has too much anyways
My nissan altima 2016 didnt have that setup, my two little hoses on the cooler were a loop, so it was actually just one hose going to the 2 small nipples on the cooler. I still flushed it, hope i dont mess anything up

Hi im mechanically inclined and went to automotive school i have a 2013 nissan murano sv with 56 k miles. Im having a problem with what i believe is the electronic part of my cvt transmission.it runs and drives fine but once it reaches operating tempature especially at stop lights or stop signs the car wont advance when i step on the gas pedal . if i turn it off let it cool down turn it back on and itll drive again. My question is. Would changing out the transmission filter and flushing out the cooler fix the problem? Or is it more of a tcu problem. Ps Ive changed the gas pedal already and did a re learn procedure with a scanner so i know the gas pedal isnt the problem. I thought id ask someone who actually works with nissan everyday. Any info would be great thanks.
It could be over heating and in Fail-Safe mode. I've seen it where changing the fluid does help fix it but also when it doesn't. Sounds like it could be a valve body issue also. If you have a way to scan the transmission and check and see the cvt A/B count that tells you if it's overheating. It should be at 0 anything more than that means it's overheating
Great video! When draining the fluid does it have to be operating temp on the first intial drain? I have been told to only drain while it is cold cause the fluid expands when hot????
@@JavsGarage Excellent video! The first I have seen where you actually level off the fluid. Is it possible to skip this step? If no, adding 5 qts is the key to allowing enough fluid in after doing the self-leveling. Correct?
This seems a more thorough way to change the CVT fluid, or the textbook way as done by Nissan techs. But I find it strange after draining, flushing, then refilling with 4.5 to 5 quarts, you still drain a little when reaching operating temperature? Then you end up with actually less than 4.5 - 5 quarts?
I have a jx35 it has 166000 miles I'm charging the transmission fluid, I guess this is the 2 time transmission has been doing service any suggestions about it
It's highly recommend to use OEM for Nissan CVT transmissions. I've seen transmission fail after someone using aftermarket fluids. I always tell people is it really worth replacing a $3000 trans just to save $20 on fluid

I'm not 100% sure I'll have to look into it but I think it's the same as a Sentra/versa. Look at my Sentra video maybe it'll help. Will comment once I get info

Yea ,fuild and the new gasket .

do you skip the cooler flush if you don't have external cooler? does nissan murano 2014 have an external cooler? do you also drain the cooler and transmission lines regardless of flushing cooler or not?

Yes bring it to temperature 112°+

Whining or a judder are symptoms also . It wouldn't hurt to do it before it starts getting worse
So if the engine is at fully operating temperature, then the CVT won't have accurate results. Am I right?
The cvt only reads the cvt fluid temp . But after adding the new fluid you have to let the car run for 10-15min so the engine and transmission will be at operating temps. So it wouldn't really matter if the engine is hot or not just the cvt. But in that time frame both should be at operating temps

It could be over heating and in Fail-Safe mode. I've seen it where changing the fluid does help fix it but also when it doesn't. Sounds like it could be a valve body issue also. Just bought a 2020 Rogue, and I am pretty sure Nissan changed the design on the full cap, because it doesn’t look like the 2017’s, and I can’t figure how to open it 😒
I'm not 100% sure I'll have to look into it but I think it's the same as a Sentra/versa. Look at my Sentra video maybe it'll help. Will comment once I get info
Jav's Garage thank you sir, and will do.
Jav's Garage my dealer said there is a special tool to take the plug off, and another special tool to check the fluid level 🤦🏻 wtf Nissan...
Wow lol they're definitely undertrained
Jav's Garage hopefully when the time comes, I can figure out how to Pry it off. Or maybe you will get to work on a 2020 Rogue, and let us know if the cap is different on the 2020 model year 😬 thanks!
Is there a crush washer on the 14mm level out plug? Or is it just on drain plug?
There's a little rubber o-ring
Do you HAVE to use a scanner to reset the CVT life on computer?
To reset the cvt life yes unfortunately. I'm only aware of the computer at the dealer that can do that
Thanks for all the help, advice and video! Will anything happen if you dont reset it?
No problem 👍 & no not really that's more of just a indicator of how old the fluid is so it doesn't affect anything
