This channel doesn't have an active community feed, so I need to post here. On the death of Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II, the patron of this institution, I wanted to offer some thoughts, as not a British Subject, but as a man of the Sea. The RNLI has benefited greatly from the patronage of Her Majesty and has done tremendous work during her reign. The service has made tremendous strides in the service of the UK and its adjacent waters in the service of lifesaving. As a sailor, it is my honor to say to Her Royal Highness: SAILOR, REST YOUR OAR!
I was somewhat surprised that the RNLI is still using that Mariner engine which is quite an old design. Do the RNLI have plans to modernise their small outboard fleet ?
Hi, thanks for the question. The Mariner two stroke engines are quite old but are also lightweight, powerful and reliable. We are in the process of changing some of the two strokes to more modern four stroke engines 🙂
Hi Charles, the main reason for the replacement is that the MTU engines have more power so the boat can run at same speed with less load on the engines so are less stressed and parts last longer. The CAT 3412 engines are also older and all engine manufacturers phase out models as they become less competitive and sell less so its good practice to avoid becoming reliant on equipment that may become obsolete and more expensive to support. We hope that answers your question.
Saving Lives at Sea is a brilliant series of documentaries and long may they continue. 💗
Thank you! It's always great to watch our crews in action
