- Gemini 8 Full Mission Part 1
This video is the first of four in a series that will cover the entire flight of Gemini 8.
Captions have been added to show the mission transcript. There is no PAO commentary. Orbiter Space Simulator is used to show events when the spacecraft was in range of the ground stations. HD earth views are used whe the spacecraft is out of communication with the ground stations. There is limited video available. Thanks to Ed Hengeveld for the still shots.
all photos and video and audio courtesy NASA.
Too few people can really appreciate the amount and the value of work that is done in all your videos. Keep goin ;-)
It's outstanding! I'm in awe
I do!
That's Jim Lovell as Houston CAPCOM. I'd recognise that voice anywhere.
5:51?
I was gonna say! Unmistakable voice
Love the story of Gemini 8: as a pilot I marvel at Armstrong's coolness under extreme pressure. I wouldn't have been able to keep my wits about me in that kind of stress....
+ku4uv if Armstrong was the first man on the moon....then who set up the camera so we could see Armstrong comin down the ladder. was the cameraman the first man to set fot on the moon and Armstrong second?
+CivicSTS Number one the camera was on the lunar module. Number 2 there are no wide shots of Armstrong making his first steps. Number three the vast majority of pictures you see are a Buzz Aldrin because Armstrong was the main photographer. Any other questions? Have a nice day. 😊
He won his seat on Apollo 11 with that recovery.
Another gem, LM5... You spoil us!... Thanks again.
+Steven Eppler well...it's nice to be spoiled once in a while lol
Thank you SO MUCH for developing this MARVELOUS video series. I am writing this comment on the 55th anniversary of the historic flight of Gemini 8 and the magnificent crew of Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott.
Oh man, I never knew Wally Schirra tried to contact Gemini 8! That's too funny. Shame he didn't seem to get through. I love how Flight didn't object at all, he just sort of laughed it off. I have a feeling a stunt like that wouldn't have gone over so well during Apollo or Shuttle years :D
Terrifically appreciated! Teaching the younger generation is more fun when I can show the actual events. Color doesn't hurt either.
+Per Van Valkenburg excellent to hear someone is using these to teach! thats made my week - regards LM5
Wonderful. Amazing stuff listening to these guys.
As a member of the 80's génération, I didn't have a chance to expérience the gréât missions that paved the way for the trip to the moon. Thanks to you, we now the chance to expérience them as they were. Thanks for you your extraordinary work. Sorry for my english which May not be very good. I'm French and bad in English.
Welcome back my friend, it is good to see you again.
Nice to see some Gemini mission material again & I love the transcript feature as well.
This was a very important mission that was actually a failed one officially, but showed just how cool and calm men like Neil & Dave were when they had to be to save the craft & more importantly, themselves. It's no wonder that these 2 men would become Commanders of their own Apollo Moon landing flights in the years to come!
+Bog Wraith hiya Bog...yes, although its been 2 months since the last Apollo 8 video I have been, as you can see, quite busy lol glad you like the transcript ... regards as always LM5
I was in the US NAVY 1963-1973. I was stationed at Treasure Island when Gemini 8 took place, and I can assure you we had 24/7 coverage. After all, the Navy had to pick them up, right?
Thank u thank u!! Listening all day at work. Your hard work is amazing and I'm thankful.
You are welcome archernace...glad u have liked them regards LM5
An important point raised in James Hansen's biography of Neil: if he hadn't been able to save the ship, NASA wouldn't have been able to figure out what went wrong because they were out of radio range at the time. And with the Apollo 1 disaster a few months later, that might have spelled the end of the space program.
I am just amazed at how much was achieved in so few years. It's truly incredible. These days it's like we've gone backwards. It must have been an incredible time to have been involved in the manned space program
It sure was exciting to have been a kid then, and following all of this!
Thank you so much for the transcript. And thank you for your time and effort. Some of the best stuff on UA-cam!
+Byron Hilley thanks Byron...I really appreciate you taking time to comment..am glad I did the transcript...even though it's taken me ages to do...regards LM5
@@lunarmodule5 It is very much appreciated. I watched First Man not knowing anything about the subject and now here I am learning tons of stuff thx to you!
@@sheldonspock5566 glad you liked this series Sheldon...hoping you get to watch other missions...regards Lm5
Another great piece of work LM5. As Mark mentioned earlier, the transcript is a great addition. A timely choice of topic, with the 50th anniversary of this most significant mission coming up in a couple of weeks. Nice to hear an Aussie accent during the Carnarvon comms ;-).
+gort58 Hi Gort - great to hear from you - have been planning doing GT8 for over a year now, just had to get Apollo 8 finished first. This one will take a frew months but yes, it's good to think that one of the Geminis from the second year of flights will be a full mission in its 50th year anniversary. regards LM5
Very good!! And with the subtitle it is something else, excellent!! Thanks LM5!!!
+Ricardo Hector Grumberg hello hector...good to hear from you. am glad you liked this one...more to come soon ...Regards LM5
LM5 i don't know how you got these but thanks and keep them coming
Thanks a lot! I watch your videos from Kyiv, Ukraine.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much for yet again another fantastic production, LM5!
One of my heroes, the late, very great animation director, Chuck Jones, once said, "No matter how difficult it is to create a piece of work, always make sure the love of creating it comes through first and foremost." That describes you and your work to a T, my friend. ;^)
+Joel D. Terry wow...Chuck Jones...one of my heroes! He was right of course, and this series will take a long time to put together but it will be worth it. I don't think I will do the subtitles on any future flight that lasts more than 10 hrs as the work involved is very time consuming. if I did it for an Apollo flight it would take several years to put together! thanks for your very kind words - regards LM5
Excellent choice for your next mission! I love the idea of adding the transcript.
+Mark Percival thanks as always Mark...lm5
I love all the background radio exchanges at low volume in this one. Sounds straight out of a 70s scifi movie :)
Great work, thank you :)
Wow...Awesome stuff LM5!!! Thanks for all of the time and hard work you put into this video!!!
+CTaylor7013 hi CT...good to hear from you...glad you are liking the new series...gonna take a few months to complete this series due to the captions...so bear with me...Regards LM5
Wow, just found this and I watched the whole thing. It was very interesting and I Want to thank you for posting this, and to tell you to keep them coming :)
+Carson Fischer thanks Carson...will do! regards LM5
Always loved that shot of Gemini coming up thru the clouds. Nice chase.
+Fred Thompson its a great shot isnt it!
I concur
I haven't watched it all yet, but already loving the transcript addition.
+Michael McCloud am glad u liked it as its taken 8 weeks to put them all on this video! I wasn't sure whether I should put them on as it will prolong the time it takes to get the series completed...lm5
+Saxie81 ah! just seen this post as I replied to your other one above...thanks again - Lm5
40:09-till the end
Dialog from here is utilized for the film First Man. In the film they talked a lot more simply and heavily edited (For the Mom and Pops of Oklahoma) indicating that they "over shot" the rendezvous with the Aegena. Did not realized it was A LOT more complicated (I.E. alot more corrections were done).
The film compressed the whole thing to about 3 minutes...
Man, that Atlas rocket turned out to be a great investment for Convair. It was a workhorse for four decades.
Majestic era, magical times.
LM5 I'm never disappointed by your videos. If you don't mind me asking how long did it take you to cut the silences and add the sub titles? This has to take a ton of time.
+Saxie81 hi Saxie...it took about 8 weeks to do all the editing. so its going to take about 8 months to do the four videos in the series...hope everyone can stay patient! regards to you - Lm5
+mr muckle please sit down lmao....
+lunarmodule5 Love your videos. I'm more then happy to wait for such high quality work.
Best is to subscribe to LM5's work, then you get a notification when a new video is uploaded. Sadly, they always arrive near midnight my time, forcing me to watch the new one until way into the night!! Great work LM5
Wow! Bravo!
Great work, thanks.
+Mick Hyde welcome Mick
I love your videos!
Ty!
AWESOME LM5...thank you!!
+Keno Keaton more than welcome Keno...and good to hear from you I hope all is well - regards as always LM5
great job! Keep it comin :)
+Joachim Voldseth thanks Joachim...appreciate your support - LM5
Un amico dall Italia grazie
LM5:
Many thanks for the marvelous UA-cam video!
I would certainly not know what was right or wrong, but it sounded like when the Flight Director asked for a reading again at 28:17, Carnarvon gave him the same reading again even though it was not what Gemini 8 had said...?
Gemini 8: "Core eight one was zero zero zero zero one."
Carnarvon: "Core eight one minus zero zero zero one."
Is that the same? Carnarvon thinks so...?
man it really show how INACCURATE was "First Man"
Excellently put together. Hey LM5, does much Flight Director audio loop recordings survive? I've only heard a little around 13's accident and 11's landing.
+kb968 I assume all of the recordings survive and are held attge US national archive...The Gemini 8 tapes released and digitised as heard here are not complete as the PAO Commentary is not included...LM5
God your videos are awesome!
Thanks John
sweet!!!!
Is that Lovell on capcom, aware there's the distortion from the comm but it doesn't quite sound like him. Were there other astronauts at the console when the capcom was busy talking to other controllers?
+lunarmodule5 I'm a real latecomer to these uploads of yours, but they are SUCH a joy! Thank you and thank you again for your jaw-droppingly great work.
welcome aboard Pat...hope u get to see as much as you can...you have till July 2019 to catch up before the next series goes up...enjoy lm5
thanks
althought I'm skipping to the Agena part lol, this is good stuff.
It is a diplexer not a dotplexer :):)
What did Armstrong mean by “and we saw wally’s fireball outside”. Was it something to do with wally schirra
Top.
Don't laugh but I am watching this video and watching "First Man" recreation of Gemini's 8 mission at the same time
(Granted First Man rendition only covers a tiny portion of the whole thing...Mainly the important parts).
i can belive guaymas is there XD
at 7:00 why does the rocket look like CGI?
+smart451cab lmfao
Because it is CGI at that point in the video, go to the top of the class.
Its to let us se what is happening in space with gemeni
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love how the AFD sounds like your average r/inglin subscriber
Who's Roger?!?? 🤣🤣
Sheesh, Comms on Gemini were horrible compared to Apollo.
Glaube Mut Liebe .
Faith, Courage, Love ???
