I remember watching this 70s version as a teenager back in 1991, close the Christmas time. It was very well performed. Theresa Stratas was a talented vocalist for sure.
I love this opera, and this version is wonderful. I, like many others, love the earlier version, but that could be because,, starting with the 1951 version, it was a family tradition to watch Amahl on our little black and white TV. For years I mourned the loss of Amahl at Christmastie, and when this one was broadcast in 1978, I was thrilled.
This little boy has an amazing voice. I'm glad the composer stipulated that under no circumstances should this role be performed by a girl or woman. People still do it, but there are some wonderful little boy sopranos out there who can handle this role.
I can't begin to thank you for this jewel. It is by far the greatest, most divine opera of all, compared to which all the others are counterfeit, such perfection of line and harmony, and best of all, it's accessible to common people, like the Savior to Whom it bears witness. So powerful is the energy of its so divine spark it's almost impossible to give it a bad performance!
I never got to sing the mother's role in college because I was just the understudy and I couldn't wish a cold on the girl who got the part!! But I know every line by heart... this is my favorite version, by far.
I have listened to this over and over again along with the rest of the episodes this whole Christmas season. It has touched my family's hearts and brought us a lot of joy. Thank you for uploading this. The message of Amahl is one that we all need to hear, especially after the devastation of 20 children lost this December...
Thanks for the upload. We are getting ready to perform Amahl in our church as an outreach to our community for a Christmas Program. We've been looking for a while for a movie and here it is! It will definitely help us to act the play. We love the story especially the miracle that happened. GOD is still making miracles by the way!
This is such a fabulous movie to watch during the Christmas season. I would love to obtain a CD for my library. I wonder if PBS has copies, since they aired this version back in the 80's.

Where can I find this version on a DVD, anybody? Our VHS copy of it DIED this year after many, many years of annual delight and Amazon wants $200 for another VHS copy!
Nice version. Stratas was great singer-actor. Can't have too much of this classic work.
