Cyril Ramaphosa Takes Oath As South African President
Cyril Ramaphosa, leader of South Africa's ruling African National Congress, took the oath of office as the nation's president for the next five years. Ramaphosa was re-elected as South African president by the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, on June 14, after receiving 283 votes. The African National Congress remains South Africa's largest party, followed by the pro-business Democratic Alliance, which has joined it to form the government. In the general elections that took place on May 29, the ANC secured 159 out of the 400 seats in the National Assembly, falling below the 50% mark to maintain the majority.
