▼About Itako Gion Festival
The Itako Gion Festival is an annual festival of Sogakumano Shrine, which is located on Mt. Tenno, and has a history and tradition of more than 800 years.
It is held for three days from the first Friday to the Sunday of August every year. On the first day, two portable shrines (commonly called Tenno-sama and Gongen-sama) are launched, starting with the Mihama Kudari. increase. During the middle of the day, the Chonai Togyo (town parade) is held, and on the final day, the Kangyo (Mountain Climb) is held.
Adding flowers to this festival are the Shishimai of San-chome, a total of 14 floats, and the Itako-bayashi performed by the Geizaren on these floats. Three of the floats are designated as prefectural cultural properties, and the lion dance and Itako Bayashi are designated as prefectural intangible cultural properties. The highlight of the festival is the "magarihiki" represented by the "noji mawashi" and "abacus hiki".
Also, along the Maekawa river that runs through the city, many large banners are set up, and you can see a unique Itako scenery that is not seen in urban festivals.
