- In this video watch me remove the neck from a mandolin. I got an older mandolin that has no brand or label. Every instrument that I purchase online seems to need some kind of repair work, this is no different...
She’s free! 🎉🎉
Did you see the one where I popped off the dowel neck by holding the neck in a vise and hammering knives in from both sides of the heel? (No heat needed) just grab the body and pull with a wiggle 😅
I’ll find the link:
No, I was looking for videos on dowel pinned necks too. I’ll take a look at your channel.
Damn! The neck on mine just popped off when I loosened the extension, though it had been loose for years before I dug it out of the closet. It has a tortoiseshell pickguard embedded on the top, still in perfect condition. Wish it had that clamshell tailpiece, though.
Great video, very educational... I have something similar to take on someday, a piece I inherited from my mother, called an 'octofone'... Years ago she took it to someone to fix it up and those idiots did a hack job...something I intend to rectify!
Thank you. Good luck with that octofone. I never heard of one it sounds old though…
Hehehe...I just got it out and looked... the decal on the headstock says octofone, the label inside the sound hole says REGAL! From what I see, it's nearly identical to your instrument...
I was watching you struggle with dowel and was all along thinking, why doesn't he just remove the fretboard ... because mandolin fretboards are so darn easy to remove and replace ... and tou know immediately if its a dovetail, dowel , or trunnion..
Also I havs a homemade pressure pot steamer and needle ... one little hole drilled into the joint after removing the fretboard , and get that steam in there and that neck would have popped right off way soooo easy ...
Anyway.... I was wondering what that make of mandolin used for the neck joint .... now i know
Great suggestions…seems like there’s 10 ways to do all these fixes… it’s challenging to know what’s right,if there is such a thing…thx for the advice ⚡️
@@vindustrialguitars not really there is no right or wrong it's just how everybody does it different. We learn from just doing it.
Little early 30s Regal. The top looks like it has not warped which is good news.
Cool ….good to know. The top looks pretty good for its age!
4:05 Kung Fu reset?
Curious as to what you use as nut or string groove files? I want a quality set and guess I will have to spend at least $100 to pull it off because the inexpensive files are not as advertised.
I have a set from Stewmac. Yeah kinda expensive, but like all luthier tools you want them to work well so you make less mistakes. I got the double sized ones, more range.
After a lot of practice tou can just use your saw simply by alternating from one side of the alot to the other while keeping the angle of the head... once you learn how to do this you'll never be hunting nut files again..

Thanks again for sharing!
Thanks man! I’ll check it out
I’m adding a second dowel for strength.
