Another reason we punch with a vertical fist rather than horizontal is because a horizontal fist twists the bones in the forearm & weakens them. This means that if you drop your bodyweight into the strike (as all ninja are taught) the radius & ulna bones can break from the impactive pressure

Sorry I cant find that explanation to be satisfactory based on the reality. If it was true we would see boxers and other martial artists with broken arms. That kata is not totally useless, there's one or other things we could practice in real life but in no way someone fighting like that would stop a strong and skilled agressor.

Under what circumstances would a "Samurai" in armour, attack with a punch.

Good question. Oh gosh, in so many situations. Weapons are gone or broken. Weapons held or seized. Two get close on the field or in a castle. Caught off-guard. Multiple attackers. On the ground in the mud and sword is lost. There are hundreds of samurai Koryu schools still being practiced, and all of them deal with punches, kicks and unarmed attacks as well as weaponry. All of them. Four of our own linages are armor-based, but still practice unarmed combat in their syllabus.

I see. What would be the target for a punch aimed at a "Highly trained" Samurai in full armour on a battle field, If he was unfourtunat enough to loose his Sword, Wakazashi, tanto and his supporting retinue of armoured retainers. Just that one of your scenarios was on the battle field.

@@inyoshin Maybe it is not even a punch, he is just unstable with all the armor and he tries to not fall by "throwing" the hand to the opponent. This kind of katas is just a map, the beggining of something, but it can lead to many many different situations. You train as it is just to have it in your "repertory" but it is almost impossible to have the exact same situation as the kata presents.

Partially. Sensei does hold a 9th Dan in Bujinkan, among other ranks and styles that he incorporates in his dojo teachings. Thanks for the question.
