Thank you. This one was interesting and easy to differentiate. Both have value but the OG fits the concept. The remix is more of a shiny reevaluation. But very enjoyable. .
Good points. I'll take the original any day. The original pressings of both the lp and cd sound wonderful to me. The remix makes it a different album almost. Like colorizing "Citizen Kane."

If you listen to the weekly syndicated radio show, “Floydian Slip,” it was reported that the 4 year hold up on releasing this album had to do with Roger Waters not liking the liner notes essay that was to be included in this release. So, they finally decided to release it without the liner notes. Also, there is actually a Pink Floyd cover band called “Punk Floyd” that does punk rock cover versions of Pink Floyd songs. Much like “Dread Zeppelin” who does Reggae versions of “Led Zeppelin” songs. I discovered them 10 years ago and their Punk Rock covers are pretty good if you can find them. They are still pretty obscure.
Waters commissioned the liner notes, it was Gilmour who opposed their release with the remix. 4 years arguing over words few will read because of streaming.
Good review. Animals is for me one of my 5 best PF albums: M, TDSOTM, WYWH, A, TW (with Astronomy dominé, AHM suite, Set the control.. songs). With this remix, finally we have there the full sonic power of this fabulous album. EVERYTHING has more space, especially the percussion and bass which stand out more. So much the better, because don't we say that a good rhythm section goes through these 2 instruments? My sound system is very happy to be able to give more colors, as if we had removed a deafening layer from this work. Their Britania Row studio never delivered this album to its full potential. I don't understand those who mention preferring the original version to this remix: the narrowness of its sound and the muffledness bring back as if we were listening to it in a cage instead of listening to it in a well-sounded room... but all tastes are in nature. Dogs is for me one of their best songs with the superb solos of DG.
First listen. About halfway through Dogs. This is my favorite album of all time by anyone. I've listened to this record more than any other over the last 40+ years. One could say I am intimately acquainted with the original recording, so I can already hear even the most subtle differences. While I can appreciate the time and effort that went into these remixes, it lacks the magic and mood of the original. Glad my old copy still sounds brilliant. Cheers.
Agreed. The original sounds like it was from another time and space. Every sound is perfect. You can't improve perfection and they took too many liberties with the mix by taking away key sounds.
I agree… there’s something about the original sound that gives it a uniqueness. cleaning and brightening it up makes it sound like anything and everything else. The sound of the original holds its own place in time and in culture.
Love “Animals” and appreciate it more and more over the years. We preordered the new remix and it arrives today. Very excited to spin it! Thanks Mazzy, we love you too!- Chris & Beth🎧🙏🏻❤️
I was at the Wish Tour in 1975 at Nassau Coliseum they opened with this piece that none of us knew and was similar to their earlier jam music lower key about 25 minutes. Little did we know it would be reformed 2 years later into an album, not sure if they ever announced anything about it? The highlight was 1st use of a large screen behind the band and played throughout DSOTM piece. Great show but filled with narcs there and throughout the tour so much so they apologized to their fans in Rolling Stone magazine. You're correct about the original, it was what Roger was leaning towards as his message of the monetary movement was in full stride!
Just received my copy. I'm going to listen to it now and I'm nervous, I'm the type who is resistant to change. 2016 remaster was great, but I still play the original when I'm in the mood to listen to the album. Apparently I'm in for a surprise here with this remix.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wanted to relax and get into it, so I had a bit of a spliff, bec PF only makes being high better - not the other way around. I appreciate the clarity of the vocals (you can hear the layers and echoes very clearly). Richard and Nick are more in the forefront, really appreciate that as well. David playing the fretless bass in Pigs (already funky af) sounds sublime, and Nick's drumming is what stands out the most, just brilliant. I'd still choose to listen to the original over this, but it is definitely a sonic treat and worth revisiting.
A late night pass through Sheep is always intense. At 3:15 you meant to say the next album was The Wall not Wish You Were Here Glad to hear this sounds nice - versus a UK original? Waiting for mine
It took me 40 years to discove Animals and I now play more than The Wall, which is of course simply The Wall, no further words are needed on this album.
Got this today and I totally agree with you. Other's may prefer this (younger folks) but as far as I'm concerned my go to is the original as well. I actually wasn't sure why I didn't like it at first. Not until I put on my original UK and I right off the bat I notice the differences between the two. I like how you described it. Too bright and less moody. I actually turned the volume down as I noticed I was getting some ear fatigue listening to it.
For those of us who were around in the 60's, I discovered a UA-cam channel called Yesterdays Papers. Rock stars from that era review new singles released for individual months in the late 60's.
Great presentation! I never got into Animals until I heard the remix. And I don‘t usually like remixes of classic albums - I think the Beatles remixes take away from the music by bringing out ‚details‘ that were not intended to be upfront. But with Animals I think the remix brings out MORE of the darkness because the impact is more powerful. It‘s more intense because the added clarity (in a good, non-Beatles way) makes the soundscape sparser, more lonesome if you will. To my ears the original sounded kind of weak - sonically speaking. Especially the drums which benefit hugely from the remix I think. They are still ‚70s drums‘ - which is good - but the just sound and feel much better. And for all the direness and conflict - David Gilmour outdoes himself on this album which really says something. The guitars are absolutely killer!
Great remix, got to get me a copy. Found myself listening to it several times in a row in headphones really enjoying clean and crispy sound that I was kind of missing with the original pressing. A job well done.
Thank you. This is exactly what I've been saying. I feel like I've been pissing in the wind, tbh. This mix is wonderful, and I'm glad to have it, but I think the crackling, dangerous venemous tone has been buffed away, and all the individual components have been polished and hermetically sealed into this pristine shimmering and somewhat sterile version of the album. Sonically gorgeous, but lacking that rusty razor blade danger of the original. I will definitely play this remix and enjoy the hell out of it, but when I want to sit down and experience the vitriol of the album, i'll turn to the '77 Harvest lp.
Agree 100%! Clean, sharp, glossy, and perfect - this new mix detracts from the original in many ways, but adds so much in others. You need both in your collection - they are 2 separate albums!
@@derekcummings5429 Have had another week to play with it. On 5.1 the ‘18 remix is fantastic. On headphones or on vinyl, I’m still going with the original. Saw Roger last weekend as well. Suffice to say I’m a little Animals’ed out right now. It’s all going back on the shelf for a while so that burn out doesn’t settle in.
Thank you for the great review Mazzy. This was the first Floyd album I heard as a child. It was like nothing I’d heard up to that point. I loved it immediately and it still remains one of my favourites. I will be picking up my copy tomorrow. Can you imagine how interesting the film Animal House would be if Orwell wrote it? I’d pay to see that!!!
I enjoyed your review. I have as much time in on this as you,the only reason I missed this show in Chicago was I was in the Boundry Waters canoeing. I own the original vinyl, the Redbox CD and the 2016 vinyl. $20.00 I received the Blu ray,SACD and original mix yesterday. The surround mix on this is one of the best I’ve heard. Unreal. I mean STUNNING. I immediately ordered the vinyl too. You can have all the other mixes,I doubt I’ll ever listen to them again.
For the last 20 years or so, I’ve owned a Japanese produced CD of Animals which I’ve always loved. Been a long time actually since I heard anything like a red book of this. I have the 5.1 of this on the way. I have two separate amps, so I can manipulate a little. Concerns me a bit hearing reports that Gilmour’s guitar is pushed back on Dogs. I’ve listened on UA-cam to the vinyl though and have heard all sorts of very welcome changes already. I’m good with different versions.
for me... the main problems was the mixing of the drums which was very weak and the mastering as well ..but this version i've waited for so long gives the magic of what these four guys were capable to ....
I like the remix. Fantastic sound on the CD. I’d say I might buy the vinyl too. I love the rawer sound compared DSOTM and WYWH. The eerie phase affected low keyboards are fantastic. Gilmour’s guitar is fantastic and aggressive. Drums and bass big and clear. Remix’s are fine as long as they don’t ruin an classic album but an original mix should always be available at the same time. The Genesis CD catalog is now remixed as standard. Some prefer the original mixes.
Original is what we have used to, still waiting my lp but the little preview from spotify i can already tell it sounds the way it should have sounded in the first place. I will come back To that if im wrong
I feel when you mentioned Orwell’s influence in 2:26 talking on 1984 I think Floyd referenced Animal Farm more but instead of a critic of Stalinist Soviet Union it was more on the class divide present in 70s UK. Great video nonetheless, love Floyd and the album too and enjoy hearing peoples take on their thoughts of the album.
Beatles Revolver remix, Animals Remix. They'll remix, remaster, re-do artwork, re whatever as long as they can keep selling you the same album over and over. Look 👀 this version comes with a different picture on the innersleeve where the eyes are looking right not left like the other version, i NEED to have it. I'll just listen to the original version, it's fine.
the bluray is 20 bucks on Amazon. you get the 1977 stereo master, the 2018 stereo remix, and the 2018 5.1 remix. not really a big money grab as these things go. the early animals cd's still go for at least $15 on ebay. happy they put the original cd master on this instead of a needle drop of the first UK vinyl. those things are only good for showing how vinyl still pales even given the most high end transfer efforts.
Hi Mazzy. You got me at gorgeous. Have no turntable so I may stick to my original CD. You need to keep it dark.... to keep the subject authentic. Great album that stands in the shadow of the masterpieces that came before and that mighty Wall. God bless and have a nice weekend
Great release. i must say I am loving how your videos are connecting with me recently. My mother lives in kings Hill airfield (Beatles connection and an early video regarding your book), I also lived literally across the road from Battersea Power station before the rebuild.
Your video inspired me to order the LP of the new (er, 2018) remix! And I also added the blu-ray surround sound disc, too, in my order. I have the 2011 remaster on CD and the original mix on vinyl from many years ago. I think I have enough Animals now!
Got this one in the mail today but haven't spun it yet. Have the 2016 and used to have an OG. Looking forward to hearing this one as I've come to enjoy Animals a lot more as time passes. Thanks for your thoughts, Mazzy.
I'm waiting for the sacd to ship from my retailer but certainly a lot of thought has gone into the packaging on the record and usually P.F. don't charge the earth for these things unlike certain artists (Messres Stanley,Simmonds and co I'm looking atcha). Currently on the 2016 for vinyl. Thanks for the video, Mazzy.
I’ll never get off the trouble American’s have pronouncing Esher, Battersea or Twickenham lol thanks Mazzy another great video, going to get this after seeing this video.
Listened to the remix, and I don't dislike it. Animals is my favorite Floyd album, and perhaps of all time. I love the way the '77 album sound for its balance of all the members. I feel the 2018 album certainly takes some punch out of Waters's bass, which I personally feel shortchanged by on Dogs, but the new sheen and clarity of some of the other instruments allows for a differently angled listening experience and fresh perspective. It's certainly acceptable, but I prefer the grit of the original
I was just thinking to myself, why another remaster of Animals only 6 years after previous (2016) which I have. If you had to choose between 2016 and 2022? Thanks!
For me there are pluses and minuses to the 2022 remix. I prefer the original vocals on Pigs on the Wing as the reverb gives them a wistful distance as opposed the up close sound of the remix. The guitars on Dogs sound great such as the sustained climactic note at the end which leads in to the power chord ending, it sounds as intended. The drums are really pumped up, maybe a little bit too much at times. The keyboards sound more focused and well defined but some of the desired atmospheric effect is lost. The best part about the remix is hearing previously hidden sounds. In short I think both versions are worth having.
Thanks Mazzy. I've been on the fence about this release. I do have the og and some reviews state there is a slight difference. Knowing your gear and experience I believe they're understating that difference. This helps plenty. Greg
I think you summed up the sentiment of many "old school" Pink Floyd fans who were around in 1977 when "Animals" was first released. The remix sounds very good, but the emotion that made the original 1977 release so "biting" is missing in the remix.
I get myself in trouble because I don't really have all the information, resources, and time (a choice) to study the history, listen to ever recording or even if I did have the income, the desire to spend it on this alone.... ..... Never the LESS: I would venture to say that PINK FLOYD was the mentor of German Kraut Rock. Recently there was a lot of talk about Kraftwerk at Rachel's Chat and coming here reminded me of something I thought but didn't share there; but posting here will unlikely result in it being seen - so for no other reason I feel safe saying it ;) lol
The big question... can you hear the cymbals? This is my fav Floyd album, but as a drummer I have lamented many times that on the original mix the cymbals are way down in the mix compared to other Floyd records (or any rock record for that matter). Even though the original mix is lacking in this way I still loved it cuz its dark, different and weird. But I'd love to hear what Nick was playing on the high hat or crash cymbals.
I bought the new remix but unfortunately mine was full of surface noise and pops, I was so pissed. I’m returning but this time I will exchange it for a cd version. I got feeling many of these pressings are bad. I see many people complaining.
I really like these remixes. Was there ever a similar remix of other albums like DSOTM and Wish you Were Here? I know they have been remastered but I'd love to hear remixes of all of those. I think I remember seeing somewhere that there were. Not sure if I imagined it though.
I suspect that that the 'brighter' Animals cover might be that either the photo was touched-up or if it was a painting as I suspect, then it was restored hence the sharpness.
the new cover is brilliant...but...the original cover is essence, which i assume, correlates with the sound and the theme of each pressing....i like the 'muddy' quality of the original...as a huge fan of the book 'animal farm', the production fit perfectly over waters' vocals and rick wright's amazing keyboard skills....it's all about the essence stupid, and even a cover makes all the difference....peace always my friend...rocky
Nailed it! You hear it the same way I do ! Hard rocking Pink Floyd album but my copy has static and snap crackle pop immediately at the beginning. Think I'm going to send it back and get the CD. I consider it a different listening experience but not better, some details brought out louder but not fond of the heavy Bass. I prefer the old mix, it seems to have more kick and rock feel to it. I also prefer the original album cover. Pink Floyd music suffers from Snap Crackle Pop and using paper sleeve, poor quality control. All vinyl manufacturers need to take lessons from blue note tone poet and blue note classic vinyl releases. They are dead silent, clean, centered flat as glass and properly packaged. One of the worst new pressings I just received was Neil Young toast. Extremely filthy with many fingerprints also. Loud pop and skip. Ragged edges with untrimmed loose vinyl creating debris. Ragged Center hole untrimmed with loose vinyl creating debris. And last but not least, it is a double album but they sent two of the same leaving me short one album. But at least it's an all analog recording in a anti-static sleeve! It's like somebody at the factory must hate Neil Young and purposely smearing fingerprints and dirt all over the album and packaging them wrong.
I believe it is done except for final tweaking. probably need to work out final packaging, liner notes, etc. same stuff that delayed animals for 4 years.
From what I understand any reissue of dsotm will use the existing 5.1 mix on SACD, which has been well received. Maybe they'll do hi-res 2.0 and 5.1 on Blu-ray and add the original stereo mix in hi-res. Just like animals. But the band already likes the 5.1, so no new remix
This may be a non sequitur but it has been burning in my mind. I came here after the Covid started. Before then I had no computer I was watching Melinda Murphy and she was talking about this Mazzy guy. So I tuned in and you have become my favorite Tube person to watch. I don't buy a lot of vinyl or CD but I have plenty of stock. I think it was your connection to San Fran which I was obsessed with. In the 60's when I was in high school, it was especially the Fish and Jefferson Airplane. I knew nothing about Janis in those early days, but everything finally evolved into what we used to call the Underground. All of this gets evoked every time I tune in. All the happy memories.
Maybe combining the originals with the remix versions would sound good, if the tracks are both in the same time and of the same length. Easily enough done in Audacity. I might try it and see how it turns out
Fantastic revision of the original album.Drums & bass are more upfront something the original was lacking. The 2016 sound fantastic too. I agree with you Mazzy the original is certainly darker & more menacing. Fun to have both 😎What’s interesting Mazzy regarding classic albums you tend to favour originals over reissues. Brings me to Revolver ,This new stereo has to better the original, with the new demixing technology. Giles has no where to go if he get’s this one wrong. But will you Mazzy still favour the original that is the question. Bring on 28/10/22 Have a fantastic weekend Mazz Bank Holiday on Monday in the Uk 🇬🇧 RIP QE2
I like your take on this. I felt similarly that the original mix be it as it may, has a kind of magic the remix does not have. 2 questions, your a seattle-ite, right? Did you go see Waters last weekend? Also, why are you not doing surround? The surround mix is pretty impressive here. 👍
I agree with your take, Mazzy. The new mix sounds great, but the original works much better for the content of the album. It's nice to have this one, but it won't be my go-to.
I've listened once so far to the remix. While it has tons of clarity, it managed to strip some of the rawness and aggression. Especially on Sheep. Therefore if I had to choose I'd pick the original as still reigning champion.
I love this better than the wall, all lower case by the way. This is way better. the wall is over played and commercialized by radio contracts…period. Sorry, but that’s how I feel about that. Pink Floyd from 1977 and back is my favorite period.
Correction: Misspoke: George Orwell's Animal Farm as in the title and not 1984. And I reversed the Wall / Wish order. Slippery lips
And you called it Animal House as well. I thought I missed a book.
Thanks

Well you can't improve a masterpiece.
Have it on order and awaiting the album... so excited to hear it... so thankful for your thoughts, as always, Mazzy! Even more excited now!
At 3:15 you meant to say the next album was The Wall not Wish You Were Here
Glad to hear this sounds nice - versus a UK original? Waiting for mine
It took me 40 years to discove Animals and I now play more than The Wall, which is of course simply The Wall, no further words are needed on this album.
You and Micheal 45 continue to explain how the original works best and in many cases has better (right approach) sound. Bravo
Completely agree. This ruins the mysterious mood of the original.
For those of us who were around in the 60's, I discovered a UA-cam channel called Yesterdays Papers. Rock stars from that era review new singles released for individual months in the late 60's.
Always loved this Album , just something about it , it's allway been my fave , what an awesome album love to hear the new arrangement , RARARA
I'm downloading it now as a torrent
perhaps the BEST PF LP. Timeless.
Another really really Goode one...thank you..I
Box set pre ordered. Bluray + cd for me, vinyl for my 16 yo daughter! Thanks for the review, my daughter can’t wait now 😂
This is my favorite Floyd record the remix is delicious
I loved hearing your take on this Mazzy. I can't wait to hear it. The new cover is very cool once the huge hype sticker is removed. Take care.
Yeah my pinned comment here corrects my mistakes 🤠
Great album and tour
Beatles Revolver remix, Animals Remix.
They'll remix, remaster, re-do artwork, re whatever as long as they can keep selling you the same album over and over.
Look 👀 this version comes with a different picture on the innersleeve where the eyes are looking right not left like the other version, i NEED to have it.
I'll just listen to the original version, it's fine.
the bluray is 20 bucks on Amazon. you get the 1977 stereo master, the 2018 stereo remix, and the 2018 5.1 remix. not really a big money grab as these things go. the early animals cd's still go for at least $15 on ebay. happy they put the original cd master on this instead of a needle drop of the first UK vinyl. those things are only good for showing how vinyl still pales even given the most high end transfer efforts.
thx for sharing, i got the uk 1st press, i was 16 when the album came out,
Hi Mazzy. You got me at gorgeous. Have no turntable so I may stick to my original CD. You need to keep it dark.... to keep the subject authentic. Great album that stands in the shadow of the masterpieces that came before and that mighty Wall. God bless and have a nice weekend
I have the SACD and Blu-Rayon order. I can't wait to listen to this in all of his 5.1 surround sound glory. Was the live show in 77 in QUAD sound ?
Shine!!!!! Shine on you crazy Diamond!
Than you for watching. Enjoy it ✌🏼
I'm waiting for the sacd to ship from my retailer but certainly a lot of thought has gone into the packaging on the record and usually P.F. don't charge the earth for these things unlike certain artists (Messres Stanley,Simmonds and co I'm looking atcha).
Currently on the 2016 for vinyl.
Thanks for the video, Mazzy.
Great review, Mazzy always getting in his Kinks reference. LoL…a 😂
Kinks and Beatles of course ✌🏼
Best PF record! And the remis is amazing!
I’ll never get off the trouble American’s have pronouncing Esher, Battersea or Twickenham lol thanks Mazzy another great video, going to get this after seeing this video.
Eeeeeessher 🕺
@@mazzysmusic lol that’s much better 😂
Hopelessly passing your time in the grassland away
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air
Thanks!
This is the first time it’s been remixed. I prefer the OG micx as I said in the videos.
One more gem of a video, Mazzy! I might get it and see…. Great analysis, honest take and beautiful approach
My fav PF album can’t wait to listen to this new version I love my OG pressing though
I really like that new cover art.
Me too. Remixed like the music!
@@mazzysmusic At least they were honest. This is a different album. It is not Animals and doesn't deserve the same cover art.
Thanks Mazzy. I've been on the fence about this release. I do have the og and some reviews state there is a slight difference. Knowing your gear and experience I believe they're understating that difference. This helps plenty. Greg
I enjoyed your take on this and relating the sound to subject matter.
i bet that booklet SMELLS fantastic!
I think you summed up the sentiment of many "old school" Pink Floyd fans who were around in 1977 when "Animals" was first released. The remix sounds very good, but the emotion that made the original 1977 release so "biting" is missing in the remix.
Thanks for review! Will definitely pick up the new reissue based on your recommendation 👍
Animals is PUNK Floyd, I love it!
Yes there has on blu ray audio
@@randomprecision4125 cheers. Knew I seen it somewhere.
They’ve take the reverb off Roger’s vocals on “Pigs on the Wing” and it sounds better - dryer, more immediate and intimate, and fittingly vulnerable.
I suspect that that the 'brighter' Animals cover might be that either the photo was touched-up or if it was a painting as I suspect, then it was restored hence the sharpness.
Well it’s a different photograph and that location in London around Battersea had been somewhat gentrified since 45 years ago.
the new cover is brilliant...but...the original cover is essence, which i assume, correlates with the sound and the theme of each pressing....i like the 'muddy' quality of the original...as a huge fan of the book 'animal farm', the production fit perfectly over waters' vocals and rick wright's amazing keyboard skills....it's all about the essence stupid, and even a cover makes all the difference....peace always my friend...rocky
Dogs has Dave Gilmours best vocal and guitar performance of any pink floyd song
A brilliant album
The album cover somehow reminds me of Supertramp - Crisis What Crisis
Well done. Glad to hear your thoughts on it
23$ WOW!! Up here in Canada it's 40$......
26.99€ incl. shipping here overseas...
@@leonhardtart7163 Wow. I don't understand why it's so expensive in Canada.
@@benoitc.5400 it’s similar to flight costs and even costs for train tickets. It depends in a way on the „richness” of a country.
I was impressed 'Pink Floyd' allowed Roger Waters on their YT Channel to talk about the history of the cover
The Wall was subsequent to this album, not Wish You Were Here ... I mention that ONLY to say that a remix of The Wall is potentially in the works.
I believe it is done except for final tweaking. probably need to work out final packaging, liner notes, etc. same stuff that delayed animals for 4 years.
@@ctrlzyx2 I guess DSOTM@50 will take priority
From what I understand any reissue of dsotm will use the existing 5.1 mix on SACD, which has been well received. Maybe they'll do hi-res 2.0 and 5.1 on Blu-ray and add the original stereo mix in hi-res. Just like animals. But the band already likes the 5.1, so no new remix
@@ctrlzyx2 OK, so they WILL have time for The Wall ... can't wait
Thank you. I love Melinda so happy she got you here 🥂
Maybe combining the originals with the remix versions would sound good, if the tracks are both in the same time and of the same length.
Bring on 28/10/22
Have a fantastic weekend Mazz
Bank Holiday on Monday in the Uk 🇬🇧 RIP QE2
Enjoy your long weekend Li am 😏
I like your take on this. I felt similarly that the original mix be it as it may, has a kind of magic the remix does not have. 2 questions, your a seattle-ite, right? Did you go see Waters last weekend? Also, why are you not doing surround? The surround mix is pretty impressive here. 👍
I like it a lot. Sheep in particular
Let me add to this comment, Dark Side of the Moon also gets played a lot too, still think it’s better to here than the wall.
