To Save a Thousand Souls: HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD “Then the Lord said to Elijah, ‘Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by.’ A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord-but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake-but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake, there was fire-but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.” 1 Kings 19:11-13 Now that we have discussed developing a spiritual plan of life and finding a spiritual director, we must talk about to whom we should be listening. Many voices shout for our attention, so we have to be able to distinguish among them. God almost always speaks in a small, still voice as he did to Elijah, though there are some notable exceptions. St. Paul was knocked down and struck blind. Only then could he hear the voice of Christ saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4) God spoke to Moses in thunder and lightning from the mountain and the Israelites were terrified. They said to Moses, “You speak to us and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we shall die” (Exodus 20:19). Personally, like the Israelites, I prefer the small, still voice. I had a friend who went to the Holy Land many years ago on a pilgrimage. He told me this story. One day, I was standing in the main street of a little village, looking out towards the country. I saw a shepherd coming into the town with about twenty-five white sheep following him. I had never seen a real, authentic shepherd so I watched with interest. Then I looked in the other direction and saw another shepherd coming into town. He also had about twenty-five white sheep following him. The two shepherds knew one another and greeted each other with a laugh. The two of them began to walk side by side down the main street heading towards the Church, in an animated conversation. Of course, their sheep got all mixed up! I was very concerned about this and wanted to shout, “Can’t you see that the sheep are all white and they are getting mixed together. You’ll never be able to separate them.” But I said nothing. I just watched and learned. At the end of the street, the two shepherds waved to one another and one went to the left and the other to the right. They began to call their sheep using a certain voice, a sound that I had never heard before. The two calls were very distinct. And I watched in amazement as every sheep separated and followed his own shepherd. The shepherds never even looked back. They knew that their sheep would follow their voice! My friend told me that for the first time, he understood the teaching of Jesus in the Gospel of John, “I am the Good Shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me” (John 10:11). The passage also says, “When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of him and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him because they do not recognize the voice of strangers” (John 10:4). Why did those sheep in that story know their master’s voice? The shepherd spent an enormous amount of time with those sheep. Shepherds would often spend weeks at a time out in the wilderness with their sheep. Thus to recognize the voice of Jesus, our Good Shepherd, we have to spend a lot of time with him, both in silent prayer and with his Word, the Sacred Scriptures.
Some doubts that l had about dreams. intuitions dharshanagal etc is cleared for me.when l experience such things l will not tell others ....Those who have not experienced.it will not understand it.They can evn say that there is some thing wrong with me.....
You are correct. But. God is spirit. He relates & reveals through Mysticism. There is intellectual intuitive & mental Mysticism. Both are complementary. Aquinas & Assisi are not contradictory but complementary. All must be open to both.
