That blunt force joke was gold. I'm definitely about to binge your whole channel. I did my first open mic last week, killed it, and now I'm hooked. I had one joke where a comic actually said "I LOVE that. THAT'S a good joke." I know I'm funny, but I also know I'm still feeling around in the dark. I've been writing jokes for over a year, and finding your channel is like like finding the light switch in a dark room full of dusty premises. I can't wait to go back through all my material with a fresh, educated perspective. Thanks so much, Jerry!
This was insanely helpful! Open mic’s are often more anxiety inducing for me then performing for a real audience at a show. I’m gonna implement this stuff right away ❤
Mics with no actual audience and just other comics can be great. Great opportunity to work out new material and if you can get a laugh from other comics then probably a keeper. If you ask, most are more than willing to give you notes/tags. Thanks for the upload JokeDoc! 👍🏼🔔
I disagree because the comics who refuse to laugh at any of your jokes make you think some of your good jokes are bad. It's a toxic unsupportive environment. Luckily, I've used some jokes for the general audiences anyway and they led to a lot of laughs.

We hv to steadily growing Open Mics in Kampala, One with 90% Comic audience (however before every Monday night ,Comics go thru each others pieces and build material,it helps reduce the pressure)..@ the Sketch Open Mic (Sunday evenings) Comics meet 2 Hrs before the Mic and build material/supplement on each others piece...it has really worked for us. I wish some other comics embrace it too

What's your opinion on appearance? Especially for open mics. For shows I always dress appropriate in nice clothes but often times for open mics which are at dive bars or such I sometimes show up in work clothes or just compfy hoodies especially now that it's cold. Does outfit play a big role in performing at open mics? Should I stay consistent with my outfits to be seen as the same person at mics and shows
I think open mics, for the most part are material testing grounds. Unless your act is character dependent, I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on that. Bernie Mac put a lot of emphasis on his grooming. I saw him on half a dozen occasions and he always looked and dressed like he just got out of the beauty salon. But that was his character. Dressing down doesn’t define you as a comic. Unless it’s something important to you.

I recommend performing in front of comedians who don’t laugh which strengthens you. Then when you hit the sage in front of a real audience, you’ll kill them and be on cloud 9 for two weeks🐝
I disagree. To not laugh when when they think something is funny is not about making the comic earn their respect. It's disrespectful and shows their insecurity and cliquishness. I laugh at anybody's joke if it's funny because I'm not a jerk
I experience the issue where comedians didn't laugh my first night...so I roasted the ever loving f*ck out of them. None of my jokes got laughs, but the roasts did. I was part of their group instantly. Not sure if this is a good tip, but it worked for me.
Yeah that can work. It taps into ambivalence. When you roast them, it’s like you don’t care and everyone wishes they could be up there and not care. Thanks for sharing that tip.
Actually, it’s always a good idea to drop in fresh material but you don’t have to do new material every show. Jerry Seinfeld had the same act for 25 years. If a joke is funny people enjoy hearing it again at another show.
You can work out a joke anywhere. I am killing it lately on the check out line at Walgreens on the upper west side. :)

If not at least two dozen people I don't waste my time. Aim to be 3rd-5th person up. Want a big laugh in the first 30 seconds, then I own them.

ALL comics prefer a non-comic audience, but it's hard to get one. Not a whole lot of non-comics go to open mics.
