- Oscar Piastri will race for McLaren in Formula 1 next season after the team successfully completed an opportunistic swoop for a driver Alpine thought would be its long-term future.
A four-person panel for F1’s Contract Recognitions Board ruled unanimously that the only contract to be recognised for Piastri was the deal he has with McLaren, which covers 2023 and 24.
McLaren reacted to the verdict by immediately announcing Piastri as Lando Norris’s team-mate for next year, while a short statement from Alpine thanked the CRB, saying it acknowledged the decision and considered the matter closed.
There was also a major revelation in the CRB ruling, as it said the deal between McLaren and Piastri was signed on the fourth of July. That was the Monday after the British Grand Prix, which was much earlier than many believed to be the case.

Honestly it's difficult to feel sympathy for Alpine in all this. They spent far too long messing about with Piastri, and Alonso, and for their slowness have lost both drivers

Agree although I feel there’s more to this story.
The problem with Alpine is basically their indecision (just like Ferrari) on who to prioritize. They don't want Alonso to be given a multi-year deal and Piastri was left out too long and cast to Williams. They can't prioritize anyone so they loose everyone.
They haven’t even given Piastri an FP1 drive yet. Seems weird when he is already there every weekend.

It's not like Young Driver Programmes are meant to actually coach & improve drivers. Its just about hoarding talent so its not used against you & then throwing them away afterwards. The teams have had this coming for a long time.
So how do you expect other talents to come up through the ranks then? The upcoming contracts will be mega tight now, Piastri/Webber just set a precedent.

Alpine left it too late. Piastri gave them a deadline they failed to meet it. He found another option I see no issues
Alpine definitely dropped the ball on this one. How can they let Piastri go like that? Oscar signed a contract with McLaren on July 4th. That means he was a free agent at that time. Otmar will likely get fired

Loyalty is a two way street. Alpine would gladly keep Piastri waiting if they could get someone “better.” Piastri made the right move.
They already did exactly that by trying to hold onto Alonso. Alpine have no one to blame but themselves for playing the game that way.

The whole episode has been a tawdry example of the worst of F1’s cut throat corporate culture, but Alpine massively overestimated and overplayed it’s hand, and have only themselves to blame.
Yeah, if any employer wants you to be 'loyal' to them or tries to insist you're like family they're just trying to exploit you. I have zero qualms about how Piastri handled this, he did what he needed to do for him and the only casualty was a big corporation's ego.

As a Japanese, we remeber Ukyo Katayama in his prime. He was so good despite being in a Yamaha powered Tyrell, Benneton at the time offered him a drive before Michael Schumacher. Katayama knew the Benneton was quicker, but stayed loyal, and saw Schumacher take his seat, and win the title.
Schumacher later told Ukyo that his decision was wrong, and that drivers and teams, along with their loyalty were equal. Katayama was stuck in the midfield, and his career remained meh

The fundamental problem is that all the teams are trying to lock up and coming drivers into contracts without having any actual rides. All teams are doing it, drivers are just a commodity

How embarrassing 😬 I still wonder about the culture at Alpine given that both Alonso & Piastri would rather take their chances with teams lower down in the standings. It certainly seemed toxic under Cyril.
It's worse than that, they didn't have a valid contract. Because of this the CRB award costs and have to pay Mclaren 500K in legal fees.

I find it a little rich that Otmar demands more integrity and loyalty from Piastri. Yet as soon as Vettel became available a couple of years ago, he gave Checo the boot. It goes both ways, bub. I would have picked Vettel over Checo as well, but if you want to survive in this sport, you have to be ruthless. And that is exactly what Piastri did. Good for him.
Otmar talking about integrity like we all mystically forgot he oversaw the RP team that copy and pasted the W10 is both hilarious and absurd.
With all the comments he made over the last month I can see him getting sacked as the fall guy to try and save some face for Alpine.
Not to mention how he did Perez dirty. That was just not right.

Oscar has been treated pretty harshly but I feel he made the best deal given all the unknowns at the time. No guarantees and Williams was not a great situation.

He didn’t agree with a contract parking him at Williams, that is why he signed to McLaren, but he could have told his employer he signed a contract with an other team, not telling them is a little dirty and does not look good on him, he is already burning bridges Alonso style even before driving a single lap in F1.

N C Scheckter, i bet that Piastri moving to McLaren is quite a surprising one. Like Prost moving to Ferrari in 1990.
Its even less straightforward and even worse looking on Alpine than they make it look here. Failed deadlines, almost costing Piastri SL because they didnt even sign him to the reserve driver role for 22 until the day before the season started when they rushed it through. Alpine even did some extremely dodgey stuff potentially illegal stuff by fudging dates on documents.

I have since watched and read a few more things, it's "straightfoward" in the sense that it was 101% Alpine's fuck-up, and their moral posturing since has been laughable. Like, sure, they invested in Piastri, but that doesn't give them the right to act like he's their property and essentially just lead him on. The fact that they can't acknowledge that is baffling, especially with all of those (you are 100% right) dodgey contract shenanigans at play.
@@Nikelaos_Khristianos The "investment" is overstated. Piastri apparently had total sponsorship of $3 million dollars in F2 & F3, and Alpine apparently only covered $500,000 of that. He does the job of winning F3 & F2...and they don't promote him to F1 in 2022, and had nothing secured for 2023! Best case scenario: he would be in a Williams (still useless in 2022), or still off the grid as an Alpine reserve driver for 2023.
3:25 Oscar probably didn't appreciate being one of three drivers for two seats. You made him guarantees but they weren't guarantees. If Fernando had stayed, and you couldn't work out another deal, Oscar would be test and reserve driver for a second year in a row. Don't act like that couldn't have happened. Renault was on its way to completely screwing Oscar over.
Just take responsibility instead of crying like you always do. The only reason this guy is team principal, is that he brings BWT sponsorship. The rest of it is just "clown shoes"
I don't blame him. Who would want to sit around to 2025 when they can get it now. F1 is the absolute very top and he got it.
I'm watching Formula 1 since 1995. What I have noticed is that teambosses are ruthless so as a driver you have to be ruthless as well in order to survive and get the best out of your dice rolling. If you're a wanted young driver then you have to be even more ruthless otherwise you will be wasting your first F1 years at the back of the grid with a risk being forgotten by the topteams.
Piastri and his management did the right thing here, in F1 there is no place for sentimemt.

Exactly. I think it's a bit absurd that anyone even considers giving any credibility to Otmar straight up slandering Piastri, that was nothing more but a nasty attempt at antagonizing the driver.

You really can't blame Piastri here. Webber was doing his due diligence, recognising that Alpine didn't want to prioritise his development, so he found a better drive for his client. If Alpine are so cut up, maybe they should've worked harder to get him a drive. Szafnauer is just trying to deflect.

Alpine should not be upset about this, they had till 30 June to put him in a car for 2023. They failed to meet the contract deadline as Williams never said they would give Oscar a drive and were never an option so you can forget all about that side bar, it's not relevent. Something people seem to forget is that Oscar was for 2022, not only Alpine's reserve driver but also reserve driver for both McLaren and Mercedes and could have driven for these teams if needed. You think that they would just put him in the car without first having him familiar with it? Both these other teams understand Piastri's potential even if Alpine did not.

FINALLY! The F1 media are stepping back on psychological blackmail of labeling Piastri a Traitor and Lacking integrity. All along Alpine were behaving with open arrogance in courting Alonso in the paddock and the media, as such it's little wonder drivers are seeking opportunities elsewhere. I'm sure if given the chance Alpine would have dropped any academy driver if it catered to their needs... How dare a driver reciprocate in the same manner.
While true, teams have the money and therefore the power. Piastri may someday face the music for his confidence.

@@EMichaelBall Nothing unreasonable that Piastri has done. He rewarded Alpine's investment in him by winning F3 & F2 (something only Russell & Leclerc have done, who got immediately promoted to F1). Gets relegated to reserve driver with nothing lined up (by 31/7/22) for 2023. He's already 21, and if you think that's "too young" to make such a fuss to get on the 2023 grid then please note that (current F1 world champion & runaway 2022 leader) Max Verstappen was 17 when he made his F1 debut, and Lando was 18 or 19 when making his F1 debut.
Lessons I learned from post-college is you need to be proactive for your own future. So props to Oscar for not falling under the loyalty banner
An F1 team is a business. There's no question of loyalty or "owing" or immorality or integrity here. You're paid to do a job. It doesn't make you a bad person to put yourself first.
Thank you!! I see all these comments talking about why certain drivers should stay or not stay but it seems people have forgotten that this is Formula 1! The pinnacle of Motorsport where most teams LOSE money. Therefore they don’t have time to waste around with “personalities” like Danny Ric. Sure he smiles a lot, but can he secure points? No? So they have no need for him. Loyalty is very thin in F1 and understandably so.
I like Daniel Ricciardo as a person. We all knew he's a good driver as he can even win races on the 3rd fastest car in the grid
But even then, I can't even defend him from his performances at McLaren in the last few months as Lando is able to score points in most races despite the car being much worse in pace compared to last year.
As George Russell said, "in F1, consistency is key" to have a long F1 career.

Otmar says 'Piastri should have shown more integrity' and I also often hear the words 'Piastri should have shown more loyalty towards Alpine'. Possibly that's true, but it is Otmar's job as a team boss to manage the drivers and frankly it seems he dropped a bollock on this one.
Not sure Alpine is run that way where Otmar is in charge of the drivers. I suspect someone else is in charge for driver contracts, etc. similar to how Horner isn't in charge when it comes to drivers at RB and Marko is.
I don't see where Pisatri lacked any integrity and there is no loyalty Alpine is entitled to. Drivers have to look at what is the best option to them and nothing that Alpine did before Alonso decided to leave was the best option for Piastri.

@@cidiracing7481 Yep I get that, I'm possibly wrong in laying the blame at Otmar's feet when I don't know for a fact that he personally dropped the ball rather than someone else in the team......but someone surely did, and Otmar is the team boss. There seems to be a real disconnect within Alpine. It was well within their grasp to have the optimum choice of drivers between Alonso, Ocon and Piastri (possibly Gasly and Schumacher), and yet they are left floundering. Hmmm I'm still looking at Otmar for direction (or lack thereof).

Laurent Rossi has been in charge of contracts even before otmar go there. He was the one who did both Fernandos AND Oscar's contract

The issue is that Piastri didn't tell Alpine he was looking for another seat even tough they kept financing his test drives. CRB ruled in his favor, he did nothing illegal but that was cleatly two-faced and selfish.
And they knew that he had signed for McLaren! He found a better option for himself rather than going on loan to Williams for possibly 2 years. Fair play. It only became a issue when Alonso dumped them. They tried to play both sides and lost out. It happens. It's F1. This only became such big news because Alpine couldn't except their mistakes.
The statement they released about him was pretty low. He's a new driver, did a good job finding a good seat for next year, they should have just wished him well. Putting out a statement like that just shows a lack of class and is embarrassing. A knee jerk reaction of people who've messed up trying to cover their own mistakes by blaming a young kid. Not a good look.
I suspect Ocon had something to do about it too.
Ocon defending Alonso costed both of their position. It was inappropriate timing. Its not his first time either, from Perez to Alonso, Ocon has a problem.
I don't understand your point tbh, if anything it shows how the person to "blame" for this is Alonso and not alpine? It's not alpine's fault that they only have 2 cars. They were gonna loose one of Piastri or Alonso either way, an i fully agree with their decision that Alonso was the better option. It's not their fault that Alonso decided that he just really wanted to be a tractor driver suddenly. If Alonso had been honest about the fact he was going to Aston, oscar wouldn't have started negotiations with McLaren in the first place.
@@baileyjones4379 I'm just speculating but I think it all started from Ocon's contract extension. Alpine was being too greedy for trying to keep Ocon, Alonso AND Piastri. It would've been fine if the seats competition is a three way battle but extending Ocon's contract made it clear that they're not committed enough to either Alonso or Piastri
I am actually wondering why drivers seem to steer away from alpine at this point because they seem better than mclaren at the moment.
Because the management is horrendous and if your in their young driver program you will probably never get a seat at alpine. If Alonso hadnt left suddenly then Oscar would have been chucked to williams for 2 seasons

@@RaptorV1USA If Riccardo had gotten somewhat used to the car and had accrued half of Lando's points, Mclaren would be ahead of Alpine in the constructors. I think it is right for Mclaren to gamble on a untested rookie in the car for next year, how much worse could he be than Danny Ric is performing at the moment?
Alpine speech about loyalty is nonsense. They would not hesitate one second to sacrifice his chance of getting into F1 if they could keep Alonso. This maneuver from Piastri was genius and fair.
It was an attempt by Otmar to redirect attention away from the contractual error , priests and politicians use a similar tactic when they get caught out.
This is a very good and considered video but I have the following, I believe , important points to make. The CRB say in their statement that there was only one contract and that was with Mclaren. So there was no legal Alpine contract for them to consider. Perhaps there was a letter of intent or an agreement with the Academy but clearly no binding F1 contract. After the ruling Alpine say they regard the matter as closed. If they were going to press for compensation they would have said this at that point. In reality with no contract tying Piastri with Alpine on July 4th when he signed for Mclaren they have no right to any compensation as Mclaren simply signed someone who was a free agent. So the cost to Mclaren over and above what they already had agreed to do when they signed Daniel is just Piastri wages which may be 1 million or less in his rookie year. Worth every penny if he performs as well or slightly better than Daniel especially as he has a two year contract. I dont blame Otmar as he wasnt around when Piastri should have been signed properly but this was a major error by the senior management of the team who took their eye off the ball.

Danny Ric is washed, he is too much of a risk for any top team to even consider. Maybe Haas or Williams seat the most, but even they seem not to be interested.

A lesser game than the one Alonso admitted Alpine was playing with him, using Piastri waiting in the wings as leverage while trying to get Alonso to take a 1 year contract. Alonso has also said that Otmar was NOT in the loop with his contract talks with Alpine.

Based on public statements so far, I get the distinct impression that Oscar saw things in Alpine he just didn't like. Forcing him to continue to work there would have likely led to further bad blood and attitudes, not good for either driver or team.
Even Alonso jumping ship either shows a bad working environment or that they have no long term plans in place.

Laurent Rossi handled all of these Alpine contract negotiations. He tried to hold both drivers on a string, thinking they had no other options, but he failed to understand the timeline and smallprint of these negotiations. He's been foolish and now he's angry, blaming a young driver just for having ambition. Some key staff have walked out on him now and if Gastly doesn't play well at Alpine, this could go badly for him.
What if gasly somehow deny them or red bull won't release gasly to alpine

@@kevinhanandi gasly under contract until 2023 with no release clauses He can get out but he/or Alpine has to buy out the remainder of his contract + a payment to RBR for the inconvenience of finding another driver. Plus he won't be cheap in terms of salary. Alpine/Renault is partially owned by the French government so they're going to have a hard time trying to explain why they need 10-15million euros to buy out a contract + driver salary. Honestly Danny Ric isn't going to be asking for a big salary and they can sign him on probably team friendly terms something like 1+1 year team option with a performance release clause to see if he truly is washed up. They have Doohan in the jr program and that gives them time to figure out what they want to do with either Ocon who is off contract in 2024 and Doohan who will be more than likely be in f2 another year. Just hope they actually do contracts and negotiations properly this time around
It is questionable whether Laurent Rossi has the competence to manage Alpine. Ask Alain Prost. Alonso figured that out quickly and abandoned the doomed ship. So did Piastri. It's a pity to see Rossi lose all the talent he had in the team in such a way. Well, except Ocon, that is. What a shame.
I hope that Aston Martin will prove worthy for Alonso because F1 needs him.
Alonso left because they didn't wanted to give him a multi years contact, not to " abandon a doomed ship ", and when Piastri signed for McLaren he had no idea Alonso would leave and he would have a place at Alpine next year. I love how people talk about this team as if it was a complete disaster and they were 30 seconds behinds everyone else when the team keeps getting better and better since the beginning of the season, and has reached a level of performance which is one of the best they've achieved since I don't know how many years
And by the way talking about Alonso leaving because he apparently knows the team is a "doomed ship" is pretty ironic considering all his horrible career choices in F1
The funny part of this is Alonso's mechanics, engineers, Rossi (head of Alpine) and de Meo (head of Renault) knew about Alonso joining Aston Martin.
None of them told Szafnauer (Alpine F1 team principal) about it.

Sure, he talks a lot. But he gets the good job done. And if the drivers do so too, there is nothing to fear about Marko.
Rossi on the other hand is quite, almost invisible. This makes him unpredictable.
Lauda said once that he very much appreciated Marko. Discussions with him are honest, efficient and straight forward. No place for BS with him.
Just watch the amount of great drivers in F1, FE or WEC that went through Marco. He gave lots of guys the possibility to be professional drivers. We can't deny his achievements.
Rossi could not even manage to get one young talent a seat as we have seen with Piastri.

I'm an orange blood, lifelong McLaren fan. I cannot happier. Not happy for DR3, but 1.5 years with McLaren DR had a more than reasonable amount of time to adapt to the car and raise his performance to the level expected by his paychecks. Alas, he could not. Oscar, welcome aboard!

Piastri did what was best for him. Alpine tried to keep a great talent in the team but failed to do so because they just didn’t care what he thought.
Good for him, he gets a better seat and doesn‘t have to drive around at the back.

I am with Piastri with this one. Webber did the right thing as a manager and If he is really as telented as everyone says he is, keeping him with a team like williams would have been the wrong thing to do. Its just like how Mercedes wasted georges starting career with williams. however, rumour has it, Ms William had a rock solid contract that george couldnt get out of. I really felt george could have been a world champ and the battle with lewis would have been great to watch.
One does not win 3 back to back championships in spec racecars without talent.

Like already said, if Alpine really was interested into Piastry, then they would have a contract and a seat for him. It’s one thing to have a driver academy, but another thing to not use these drivers and only use the same old faces again and again. Using Alonso as a young driver is a slap into any real young driver out there and shows, that Alpine/Renault are not interested in promoting young drivers.

Yeah but he was the one verbally pulling Piastri through the mud, who okayed the announcement he was driving for them next year and publicly claimed the team had a valid contract with them expecting to keep Piastri or get a large compensation package.

It might be shocking but the one who is asked to publicly make a statement is usually the one who the public sees making said statement and as a result gets backlash.
Tbh I feel no sympathy for him, the fact he’s been in f1 for so long and his CV essentially reads as a list of f1 teams that no longer exist and has the added extra of jaguar laughing at him even applying to them despite the decades he spent working for them outside of f1. Suggests he might not be a great team principle, yeah he can’t be blamed for those teams closing, but there’s probably a reason no team with any real ambition, stability or vision has gone for him. Alpine is the perfect place for him, as much as I hate to admit it Renault have been incompetent and the grids laughing stock since their 2016 return, although I wouldn’t exactly argue against someone claiming this incompetence was around before they left the sport
Loyal drivers in F1 are likely to miss out on their best career moves and, in this sport, most chances really come only once and then you're done. The same level of deal won't come your way again.
Ricciardo left Alpine, Alonso is leaving and Piastri will too. Integrity or no, there seems to be a reason why people do not want to stay with Alpine. It needs new leadership.

Like I said the other day this reminds me off when Alpine were Renault in 1983 fired Prost for falling win championship & firing Cheever too who wasn’t too bad that year.
Otmar's attempt at smearing Piastri is such a pathetic move. If he really cared about having Piastri on the team, he should have signed him up for 2022 while he was under contract with Alpine. If anything, it's Alpine's fiasco of an announcement based on an expired contract that shows a complete lack of integrity and in my opinion they should face the consequences for it. What's for sure is I don't envy whomever is getting that Alpine seat. They will no doubt know they'll be the team's 3rd choice and they will be driving for a team playing fast and loose with contracts.

What want mentioned that Alpine did not have the resources to push through a deal for piastri. According to other articles there was one person handling all the contracts and had thought that what they had was enough which is why they went too the CRB.
Alpine shot themselves in the foot by giving Ocon a 3 year contract back in June 2021. It robbed them of any flexibility while assuming all three of their drivers would be alright with the status quo. Alpine treated Piastri like a mistress that was promised a future wedding and tried to guilt trip him by saying "I've spent this much on you, how could you" when he tried to leave.
Especially since the guy had zero options. If someone had offered him a similar contact maybe then OK. BTW, wasn’t his contract four years? Which is even more insane.

What you fail to mention is that alpine and piastri had an exclusivity contract that stipulated alpine must find a seat for piastri by 30th of june. They failed to do so, which made their exclusivity expire. That is also why piastri signing on 4th of july is key part in this as it is after the conract with alpine had indeed expired already.
Did Schumacher show Jordan loyalty? Did Hamilton show McLaren loyalty? The door was open, he walked through it.
I think it's good for him, more than likely they would've resigned Alonso and good for him to go to Mclaren instead of williams.

I don’t understand the people calling him a snake. Alpine could just as easily have turned round after year 2 or 3 of him as reverse and tell him they’re going another way.
One year out is fine, two is too many not to look at other options and he had every right to see who else was interested. Not sure what leg Alpine thought they had to stand on but maybe a sign of their lack of understanding around the whole situation. If you’ve won the F2 championship you’re ready for F1, you can’t sit out 2 3 4 years while you wait for your team to want you once one of the other drivers leaves.
In all sports when the player wants to leave but the club wants to keep them they’re labelled as disloyal, and yet when a team wants to get rid of a player but the player doesn’t want to leave then they’re being a problem. You do you and get the best deal you can for yourself because loyalty in sports is only available to those who’s teams believe they offer them something still
F1 is still very much an "old world" sport and Renault being extremely french is the "old world" among the old world. As such there's a lot of fans in F1 and Alpine especially who hold the notion that employee's are indebted to their employer. They do not care if Alpine ever promoted Piastri, in their mind he should have waited until Alpine decided what to do with him.

Danny Ric can't trailbrake, Piastri is touted as one of the most adaptable young drivers of the sim racing generation, that's a perfect fit for McLaren as their car requires Alien+ drivers like Verstappen who can handle a lot more oversteer. In the long term just from a management standpoint, McLaren is a no brainer, Alpine could still be a Renault exit strategy and their management is a mess, Rossi should be fired over this. So well done Apline, you're now going to get two Frenchmen in the same team who already hate each other. This is going to bloody amusing to watch, Satre would love this.

Where on earth did you find this explanation? This is the complete opposite of reality, McLaren's car is an understeery mess and that's why Ricciardo can't be fast in it, because it's the opposite of his driving style which is oversteery cars like the Red Bull. And McLaren won't get back anywhere near the top as long as their car behaves that way.
I think you are getting bad information. McLaren does not have an oversteering car as Olivyay stated. You got the trailbraking thing wrong too. Danny Ric is one of the late brakers. You can’t be a late braker without being good at trailbraking. You have to slow down somewhere and if you do less of it on the straight, you have to do more in the corner.

Ricardo tried and failed to adapt to left foot braking to optimize the braking zone, that implies the car is too on the nose for him, you would never trail brake if the car suffers from understeer., You use trailing throttle to balance a nervous car, his braking style is off throttle, the race did a video on this.
@@AdastraRecordings I think you mixed up and/or misunderstood a lot of things here. All F1 cars have used left foot braking since the 90’s, except for Rubens I believe. The RB had it and Daniel did well. You absolutely use trail braking on an understeering car, not sure where you heard you never do. Trailbraking keeps the weight on the front tires and helps it turn. With less weight on the rear it rotates around easier which is exactly what you need on an understeering car. You use trail braking on many/most corners with both types of handling, just to different degrees. Trail braking on an oversteering car is just trickier because the rear is already prone to coming around. Trail brake too much with it and you spin. It’s great your trying to learn about car handling, but the best way to learn is by doing it. Actually Feeling what a car does will teach you infinitely more than watching a video.

Signing Ocon for 3 years was insane.
- Smart people barely gave Bottas a 1 year contract at Mercedes.
- Smart people struggled with giving Carlos Sainz a 2 year contract at Ferrari.
- Esteban Mojon had been driving F1 for almost 6 years and he has NEVER beaten a teammate. But they decided to give him a 4 year contract (1 year + 3 year extension).

As an Aussie, I’m massively conflicted. Over the years we don’t get many drivers through to F1, the last 20 years have been a real purple patch. I’m thrilled about Piastri, but gutted that it’s coming at Ricciardo’s expense.
