AC Unit Buzzing Noise - How to Install an Emerson SureSwitch to Stop Noise
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- Is your AC unit buzzing, humming, or makes a clunk sound every time it starts? Those noises are likely made by the contactor. In this video I show how to install an Emerson SureSwitch or how to replace a contactor in a condenser unit. (basically instructions on how to install an "upgraded contactor" in an air conditioner step by step). These are great if you have frequent brown-outs in your area, bugs constantly getting into the contactor contacts, a noisy contactor, or if you often replace your contactor because of voltage fluctuations.

ALWAYS Awesome Detailed Explanation 👍😉
Nice video, best upgrade you've ever done to an AC, no chatter noise when it start up/shutdown, and sure will last longer than the unit itself since there's no mechanical wear out like regular contact. Sad it's not widely recommended by the tech. Anything that reduces the service call is not welcomed by the industry.
I got one of these in my unit. Totally worth it
What a PERFECT way to start the Saturday morning coffee sipping ritual! You're too funny there buddy! I live for the "...and if you're still here and not in the comments section." Like a toy in the Cracker Jack box waiting to be found. Thanks Jay. This was a great video as I've been replacing my controller frequently over the years and this is a GREAT solution. Hope you, the family, the geckos and tropical plants are all well. Not so much for the Palmettos! Love to you all buddy and thanks so much for all the time you take to make such great videos! I really appreciate you!
Haha thank you Patrick! Good to know that some people enjoy those endings which are, at times, sub-par ':) Glad I was able to show you a great solution! There's a good chance you won't need to replace the controller ever again :) Things are going great over here! Geckos are thoroughly terrified of my son and we are harvesting some fruits and grasses in the back. Luckily no more palmettos in the house but I did spend 20 minutes in the middle of the night catching a rat. Bought a Honda Accord yesterday (probably paid more than I should have - live and learn.. Makes me want to make a video on what to look out for when buying a car) Today we went to the beach for the first time which had some giant waves! Being sent flying/tumbling with arms and legs flailing all over was refreshing. I loved it. Wife and son didn't share my sentiment.. Anyway, thank you for watching our videos and enjoying them! We appreciate the love and comments! God bless you and family!!
The wiring performed in this video is 100% correct. Most Emerson SureSwitch videos on UA-cam the wiring is incorrect. Please follow this video if you want to properly install this product.
Thank you for confirming the wiring M.T! Much appreciated!
Refrigratór repair
Excellent vid sir! Hope everything is going well in Hawaii!
Thank you Moises! Everything is going great in Hawaii so far! Just bought a car yesterday so we can get around now.
Awesome jay!!!
Must have been a hot day for George. He's very active
Awesome, thank you very much!
Dude, thank you very much!!!
Good video.
So much replacements for my small repair I do I will have to double capacitor two or three just to start the compression to get it to run
Would you please make a video about minisplit ductless A/C technology. Which brand is best...thank you.
Did you ever get a chance to do any video or anything related to mini split units or will you ??
Like your videos for sure.......
Thank you for asking Carl/William! Unfortunately I never ended up making any videos on minisplits or heat pumps in Minnesota. Once I buy a house here in Hawaii, I hope to install a minisplit system then and that will be a test subject for many of my videos :) And Carl, I seldom worked on minisplit units in the last couple of years so I don't have a good answer for you as to which brand is best.. Haven't exactly worked on a large variety of them.
Super
Great Video. Have a nice weekend. Thank you for sharing ^_^
Thank you ZE KENZY! Appreciate you always commenting, have a great weekend as well!
Nice ! Works with all units ?
Up to 5 tons only.
If Emerson SureSwitch is not optimum solution then what brand is highest quality mechanical contactor to use as a replacement?
Lee Sternhagen Confusing question. Where or why is it not optimum solution?
Is your time delay for the compressor in the thermostat?
Compressor I believe, most installs I put the switch in the off position because many thermostats have a time delay built in.
@@m.t.3109 how can you tell if a thermostat has the delay? even the new ones don't say on the box. i have rentals and I'm getting tired of them blowing the compositor . LOL
Art McLellen
I call the manufactures help line/cs rep.
I noticed the instructions weren't written in Hawaiian ... Lol ...And please say hey to George ...
Lol :) I will need to submit a complaint. Ah and George.. We graciously left him in Minnesota :D
because it's more electronic, be prepared to have more problems over the long haul.
You will have much less problems. Been installing these for well over 10 years, zero call backs.
A Contractor is a simple device works or doesn't... Why reinvent the wheel? More time delays, flashing lights and Chinese electronics to go bad. NOPE..
Yeah.. There's that too but I have heard from more than one person that the sureswitch did wonders for them. Folks that replaced their contactor 2-3 times a year claim they no longer have to replace it ever since they put the sureswitch in. Or bugs still getting into sealed contactors but problem solved with the sureswitch. Etc.
I installed these on 2 of my condenser units and I'm so glad I don't have to hear from the loud clap when the contactor is energized as my bedroom is between the 2 AC units.
@@cyrilasfrenchyaz Oh yes
Terrific young man. Nice to know! Thanks from a Texas wife near beautiful City of Corpus having the most wonderful Ocean View!
I installed one of these 3 years ago after bugs kept getting into the contractor. I had to replace 3 contractors because of bugs. The last 2 were supposedly sealed units!!! My ass!!! Never had another problem from the unit after the upgrade. Fantastic compared to the old school switches and easy to install.
Awesome!! Thank you for sharing your experience with it and good to know it really did take care of the problem for you!
Well done, as always! Thanks! Do you have a preference for a DIY hard start kit?
Thank you! The easiest one would be the SPP6 Kit, I like it the most: ua-cam.com/video/ThBsRFrdNiY/v-deo.html
@@WordofAdviceTV Thank you for the information!
Chanchachalaka i like that 😅
How to identify L1 & L2 same black wire
They can be swapped, it doesn't matter which one goes where. Both are simply 120v hot wires. 👍
Iwante aske u plz this power is it 220v🤔 why this unyt ac .only L1 and L2 . No neutre🤔 her in my contry this model 400v
The Emerson SureSwitch also has compressor cycle count to the nearest 100 cycles. Good video. Thanks
Nice tutorial ...shout out from philliphines
Thank you!! Appreciate the shout out from Philippines! Aloha from Hawaii! :)
Thank you, great video!
I have 2 of them that I installed last Summer and they are working so good. Also, they are quiet! No more clapping when the contactor is energized. ;o)
Great video and dialog explaining as you go! I previously (retired) worked with the original style contractors for years. Nice upgrade and easy install. Thanks for posting.
as usual great video
After watching 4 other videos this one makes sense to me. I want to install a SureSwitch and also a Hyper Engineering Soft Start on my 4 ton unit so I can power the unit with my 10.5K generator. I would like to see your install of the H.E. Soft Start also if you could with the SureSwitch.
HVAC school channel have the engineer explaining how to install it and which generator to buy for it. I guess is late for the information 😌
R22 compressor unit what would cause high preasure 140psi and low pressure 145psi. Compressor not turning on unit runs fine.
The terminals of the 24 v wires are too close to each other. You can accidentally short one of them and kill your transformer if the thermostat wasn't turned off.
Just a heads up!
In figure 3, bottom right of page 2 of the instructions
the electrical diagram shows the L2 leg to common thru the switched side of the contactor. This is not the case in all manufacturer’s.
Thank you for the heads up!
You can’t pump a unit into itself with these switches can you?
Thanks for the vid bud! Got the perfect customer for this! System installed right outside their bedroom window, complaining about the contactor pulling in.
Can you one for rheem
The code 58 water circuit open
hi great video , love the way you explain , i need a advice , i am doing gas technician course from Canada but it got delayed due to covid, I have practical experience , some one was suggesting me to do EPA universal 608 certification form a USA college online and with that certification you will be licensed to work on HVAC equipment on your own and not have to work under someone. they say the cartification is valid in canada too. Can you guide me on this ?
M.R.T. thanks 4 another experienced filled video, you'all R the best
I like how you handle that fork terminal! 😂 great 👍
Haha thank you! Might not be a Kosher approach but it hasn't failed me yet :)
How do you pump down system with this Contactor.
Turn thermostat to cool, bypass the low pressure switch with a jumper, and then when system is pumped down and both service valves are closed, remove jumper to remove 24 volts from contactor.
Nice job 👍
Thank you Harry!
what is names of types of heat exchangers in a home furnace
a couple "OF" times
sure doesnt loook like HI
Indeed, that one was filmed in Minnesota, posted from Hawaii :)
Great job you are a teacher 🧑🏫

Well done as always thanks
Thank you good sir! Appreciate you watching and commenting!
Good clip thanks
nice video thanks
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Great video 👌🏼
good👍👍👍👍job
I'd like your opinion on the Emerson 49P11-843 SureSwitch Relay? I am thinking of using these on the condenser units at my home. Thanks, Jenkins A/C & Heating
Great clip always !
Crystal clear my friend
Thank You
Thank you! Glad to hear you liked it! :)
Gracias ya vi el video el lunes lo cambio el contractor Gracias👍🏼
Excelente! Me alegro de que hayas podido solucionarlo. 👍👌
Excellent Video !!!
Your scaring George with your hand movements :)
Lol. I do flap my arms a lot don't I... I have tried to suppress the urge but before you know it, the arms are all over the place again ':)
Great video. You going to start making videos on the Big Island?
Thank you! I would like to but the house I am renting has no AC, just ceiling fans haha (I might make some non-hvac videos) so for a couple of weeks here I will continue to post videos that I filmed in Minnesota before we came here.
should pull the connector not the wire
I wonder if my new a/c unit has one of those. I'm not gonna look.
It's guaranteed for 10 years. I'll probably never have to touch anything in there, except, I will clean it out myself. 😇
As far as I know, there are no brands that have it factory installed. So probably not :) But Mr. Classic.. I do hope that your unit will not give you any troubles at all for at least 20 years!
@@WordofAdviceTV , That's good because I doubt I'll need it that long.
Super
Can you make a video of boilers. The sequence of operation. What the parts do and work. How to check if they're faulty? 🤞
I can try to in the future.. There are not very many boilers in Hawaii though.
@@WordofAdviceTV okay if you can i would really appreciate it a lot. If not it's okay I understand. Just the way you have your videos are very clear and easy to understand.
Grate videos!! I can't find a video for - I have a question regarding gas furnace and hot water on demand. How offend do I need to have it service? Especially for hot water on demand unit. Thank you in advance !!!!
Hi Jay. First you are THE BEST. thanks for all the great videos! am an engineer and worked in AC & refrigeration 40 years ago. I still have it here and there but left field since then. I have water leak at 3 ton electric air handler unit. Please advice how to handle drainage issue of an air handler. I am pretty sure the pipes are clogged but I never worked in such systems before. any word of advice? lower tray is rusted so am replacing it. upper compartment icing metls and pours all over. one relay swithc at botton tray was not working tested and it needs replacement. the upper floating switch either not working or pipes clogged. please advise if I can cut pipes and vaccum the pipes or flush them etc. thanks Jay!
Thank you for your video enjoy your home and Hawaii
Thank you for watching Jozef! Yes, we got a car yesterday so we will try to go find an open beach today :)
Hello there my good buddy 👍 ol pal Jay ✌️🐕🐕 good to see you again my friend I just got through cooking supper sloppy joe.lol..i ate two bigfoot had four and Arnold had two.. I'm trying to talk bigfoot into washing the dishes.lol...with them big paws he could sure get it done.lol...well we are doing pretty good today Jay 👍 buddy. Bigfoot is still doing great today is day 7 I believe it is that he has been doing better than normal..he always did collect old bottles but since he hasn't felt good he hasn't brought any home probably over a year and day before yesterday he comes in with a Mrs butterworth bottle..it's syrup that came in a bottle shaped like a woman.. he already has one now he has two... he has his bottle collection in my front porch behind the swing in the corner out of the way will he brought it up the steps and set it down so I can see what he has then he picked it back up and went behind the swing and put it down upright next to his other bottles.. I've never seen anything like it a dog who collect antique bottles he has a good dozen of them back there I wish I could send you a picture of it.. have a wonderful blessed day my friend 🙏 god bless you and your family.
Hi David!! You sure have a variety of scrumptious meals! Bon Appetit'! I've always thought that simple but delicious food always trumps extravagant but suspicious tasting dishes. And I love to hear that Bigfoot is feeling great! Not too long ago it almost sounded like he may not make it. He has sure gone a long way. It's incredible that he even has his own little bottle collection going! Awesome! I like him even more now haha. Thank you for the well wishes, may God bless you and yours as well!! Stay healthy and enjoy the weekend!
@@WordofAdviceTV Jay it's a miracle that bigfoot is still alive it really is and he has been doing so good these last several days it's been a wonderful time with him and Arnold.. my vet said that with his type of cancer three months is a long time even with treatment but he didn't qualify for treatment because his age and condition he has severe arthritis and cancer and congestive heart failure and he is still trucking on my friend..it's been a blessing to me to still have him at my side he and Arnold... little Arnold was washing his face earlier.lol. A tongue bath to his face and ears.lol..i like just regular old fashioned food.lol..i like a big iron skillet of fried taters sometimes.lol. You can't beat a good fried taters.lol. I hope you have a wonderful weekend to my friend..it's just me and Arnold and bigfoot just three of us.lol..
Sounds like a very relaxing environment, just the 3 of you resting at home. Yes, I agree that it's a miracle that Bigfoot is still going strong! (from everything you told me in previous comments) He must really love being with you and Arnold so he is not willing to give up the fight. I only hope the good health and happy mood continues! Do continue to enjoy the serene time that you get to spend together at this junction in life. You are making memories worth treasuring! And the simple delicious foods like fried taters makes it all the better! :)

@@WordofAdviceTV 💚👍✋ God bless you .. Thanks
Could you please make a video on how to use AC gauges and how to refill a system.
👍👍❤❤
Can you please do a video about zone system troubleshooting?
I'm guessing the larger contactor here has actual larger contact points to aid in longer lasting use. Am i right ?
I don't believe so, the contactor is solid state.
Honestly, it's a little hard to explain the science behind it but in this old video, the guy explains it real well: ua-cam.com/video/F_JH41nHdf4/v-deo.html
Using only one screw to secure is leading to trouble if vibrations loosen it. Not twisting the wires before before putting them under the lugs and not cutting the crimp connectors off before putting them under the lugs is questionable. The video/tutorial in all is very good and informative. Keep up the good work.
It will more than likely be ok.
Those are all valid observations, thank you for pointing them out! Optimally I should have used at least 2 screws but since the old contactor was on only one screw I simply just reused that one screw and it was on there really tight. As for crimping the connectors.. I have always done that and have never had a problem before but it is probably better to cut off the connectors and strip the wires as you say.
@@WordofAdviceTV I know this is just my opinion, but I agree that L1&2 should have been twisted but I don't cut off the fork terminals either. I figure it's a much more solid thing for the terminal screw to tighten up against
Thank you!!!
Finding a frog would have been a super bonus!
This video inspired me. Got Emerson unit installed on my 20 year old compressor unit, thanks to your video. The delay function got me worried that I had done something wrong, but the unit ran after a couple of minutes. Next, will be the 5-2-1 cap for my compressor.
