This is why I find the commercialisation of drugs in America so fascinating. The ability to run ads on TV for drugs simply does not happen in other countries.

@@pfw4568 alright. That is not possible. Some drugs you can buy over the counter, same ones advertised on television. Everything more potent/dangerous needs a prescription from the doctor before you can buy it. The hardest meds, like Antidepressants or opiats and other pain medication even needs a "Betäubungsmittel Rezept", which means anesthetic prescription. These are hard to get and hard to counterfeit.

I think it should be illegal to advertise drugs directly to consumers. Doctors should be an unbias third party that weights the pros and cons with you.

It is illegal in other countries! For example, I live in Canada and companies are not allowed to advertise drugs to us. But I live near the US border so our cable picks up some American tv stations. It's disgusting how many drug ads are shown during commercials. It's crazy!

Antidepressants have way too many side effects to be the first line of treatment for depression. Psychotherapy is the first line, and if that does not work then antidepressants are used. These drugs are dangerous, but can be effective. 1/3 of depressed people need psychotherapy, 1/3 need antidepressants and the last 1/3 are screwed. We still do not have a good overall method to treat depression.

I was on prozac for a year and I've been on SSRIS for three years total. They've saved my life. I used to be almost bedbound from depression and anxiety. I'm now graduating on time, an AP student, and doing as well as I can. I went from C's and D's to A's and few B's. I still have depression, but it's so much more manageable now. I don't feel like I'm suffocating from my mental health. I can manage my depression when I have a relapse.
Update: I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and put on lithium. I feel even better now on lithium than I did on SSRIs. I'm stable. I've only had one relapse since starting lithium and that lasted less than a day. It also has helped my anxiety immensely. Turns out the highs I was having on SSRIs were hypomanic episodes. I'm not an A/B student anymore, but I'm not failing. I'm stable. I have a social life now. I'll be grateful for my time on SSRIs for helping me function even somewhat, even with the enhanced hypomania.

They don't pay us anything. My story is extremely similar to these. Although, I still sleep too much as the side effect I have. But I stopped having such severe panic attacks, and then after a few months had fewer and fewer.
My migranes were maniged with the previous SSRI I took, as were my stomach problems (look up the research papers of SSRI and gut health.) But it did little to help my deteriorating mental state. And going up actually made it worse. Finally went to a psych appointment and got on this Prozac. After about a year of working on dosages, I am balanced and able to start catching up from the 6 years of total mental shutdown.

When I was younger I suffered from severe anxiety and depression; you could not stand the state of my personal hygiene and self care. Every day I attempted suicide because I felt so horrible. I couldn't function, I didn't eat, I didn't shower, and when I did something it was always crying and breaking down. My family had taken me to a therapist, and then came a night where I locked myself in a bathroom, with a plastic bag. The morning after I was in the hospital, in the psychiatric unit. The treatment I got, and the medication, helped save my life. Ever since I've recovered I feel like I'm happy, and I'm able to live happily. I'm so thankful for my recovery- I can live and dream, living doesn't hurt anymore, and I'm excited to live the rest of my life, both the ups and the downs.

I could not deal with the side effects, Mainly I was sweating a lot, I felt my heartbeat was fast most of the time and my Anxiety increased. So I decided to reduce it to 20 MG, The side effect reduced and i feel better, Somedays when i feel more down I go 40 MG but most of the time I am on 20 MG. I realized it's about being on the right dose to feel just right. This med has saved my life. There is no way i would still be a live without taking it, that I am 1000% sure.

The last part of this report talks about ads for medication. That could probably be its own report. Doesn't seem super relevant to Prozac???

allyourcode Actually, I've witnessed first-hand how the field practitioners who AREN'T funded by a county program are quietly concurring that it's been over prescribed and to too wide of an age range and to too many disorders. In this line of thought, there's followed the observance that because of this, it's been more harm than good, and no one EVER mentions the almost uncontrollable rage that it brings on in MANY people. It accentuates the hyper active moods... Hence the name... It basically has had some of the same visible outcomes as stimulant street drugs. (Rage fits that follow hyper and seemingly passive upswings that begin to burn out into irritably and ultimately into a full on tantrum with a minor trigger... If the trigger wasn't an external one. It kinda sounds like an extremely short cycling manic-drepression (bi-polar) which is exactly what my second psychiatrist told me it was. And why she didn't prescribe it to prepubescent people... It's like a controlled mania to balance the depression.)

It is as safe as the FDA says it is, but they've been wrong many times before. The rule of thumb is usually if it hasn't killed anyone yet, then it's safe. From my own experience, it made matters worse. I was having vivid homicidal dreams and thoughts; and felt like I could just about do anything. Temper became much shorter as well, and I'd cry for no reason while just walking down the street. Coming from a place of being clinically depressed and suffering from PTSD, to finally accepting help, and then this happens to you...it can be quite a lot. It was a lot. I almost killed myself and thought of taking several with me.
I'm no longer on the drug and have started treatment with cannabis instead. I haven't had a suicidal thought since I started 2 years ago. I'm healthier, happier and can deal with life/my past now. I still cry and get sad, but it doesn't feel like the end of the world anymore. No more homicidal dreams or thoughts since I've stopped taking the SSRIs.
On the other hand, my mother has tried them(when she was going through a sad moment in her life) and it did absolutely nothing for her. It helped her a little at first(I think it was just the placebo effect), but then did nothing. She still felt sad.

Prozac is used as both an antidepressant and amti-anxiety medication, like most SSRIs, and like other SSRIs, the effect it has on mental health varies depending on the person. For example, Zoloft, another popular antidepressant, can work for one person but not for another with the same condition. Since side effects of SSRIs can include suicidal thoughts (ironically enough), it can be dangerous depending on how your brain works. However, for other people that get better and don't face physical side effects, it is completely safe.

It's very important for people to share their unbiased, unfiltered experiences of antidepressants online so that people can be aware of what could potentially happen to them.

These videos make a difference, you can see the human bonding by the comment sections. This is one of the few videos where the comment sections have been so clean. Thank you Commenters and the Washington post. Continue making more videos and informing the world of real issues. I also want to compare this informational video to how much the news have become tabloids, but I don't want this comment to make the comment section more toxic, so I'll reference it like this.

As someone who has taken Prozac for several years of my life, I can safely say that it’s not that useful, especially on its own. For depression, it can help stabilize your mood and it’s more effective for some people than others but it lost its effectiveness for me and coming off of it was a horrible experience, I relapsed and was far more depressed than even when I first attempted suicide which is why my doctor prescribed it to me in the first place. It is a relatively safe drug, which this video never even gets into, but it’s true effectiveness lies in conjunction with therapy and lifestyle changes

This prescribed medication helped me. I had other options, but Prozac has been around a lot longer and being aware of my naivete, I figured it was better to choose a medication that's been around longer and studied longer.
It really does help stabilise mood. It doesn't make you happy, but allows you to function again when you exhibit clinical catatonic depression.

It’s definitely not for anyone who is bipolar; it can drive them off the deep end. I’ve seen a close friend absolutely loose it because his doctor gave him Prozac to treat depression, not realizing he was bipolar.

Reality check. I was in a bad marriage, which caused me to have suicidal thoughts, the man in question was manipulative to the max. In the same way that oppressive men did to outspoken wives in the 1850’s (laudenum), the whole Prozac kept from leaving an abusive marriage. It made me feel like a zombie, quit after a few months. Took me another ten years and some really good psychologists that enabled me to leave him. Even then he was trying to convince our family doctor that I was just “depressed” and needed some meds, she disagreed, and said I seemed to be a very happy person (I had already started the process of getting him out of my life.

i was prescribed prozac when i was barely 12 years old, for “depression “. I wouldn’t admit it to my dr at the time, but I was just living in an abusive environment and everyone just wanted me to stop crying so much. of course it didn’t help me , so I stopped taking it after a short while to appease my family . But when I got a little older ~18 It was very useful for controlling my moods during my cycle . I wasn’t as randomly weepy , or angry . I eventually didn’t need that anymore as I controlled my cycles with BCP. For me , all other anti depressants I had tried would make me either angry or tired. Prozac helped me gain some normalcy !

  • @lalababette

I feel like this does well to capture how much Prozac was lauded and then demonized before evening out. I didn’t know that some psychiatrists considered it for really tough cases though! I always thought of it like a starter medication. When I was 18 I finally decided to get help for my depression and my pediatrician prescribed Prozac for me. It helped a little but ultimately I was still having intrusive thoughts and my ocd was still bad so eventually I was put on the maximum dose. In that very short time, I started to think about killing myself all the time. I didn’t want to die, it was just a repetitive intrusive thought that came at every opportunity. If I was in traffic I thought about getting out of my car and getting hit by another car.
I changed meds after that and through some trial and error and bad therapists I’m finally on three meds that work really well. I can drive and hold down a job now. I don’t succumb to the compulsive rituals as much anymore and I don’t hate myself. I still have bad days. But not as many. I can function which is ultimately what ssris are meant to help you do. Not make you happy the way Prozac marketed themselves, but to help people that cannot function under their depression, capable of doing basic stuff to live a normal life.

I've been on prozac for about a week now and I notice positive change. Of course, a week of taking it doesn't change much, but I already don't wake up every morning, feeling like i want to die like I used to. It's been years since I last woke up and was excited for the day. I'm so thankful my psychiatrist put me on it. Of course it's not for everyone but for me it's an amazing tool to finally help me get my life together.

I definitely am one of those who became more like themselves rather than becoming like a new person with an SSRI (not Prozac). It was like I had had amnesia, and suddenly I remembered who I used to be. I was someone who could live in the moment and enjoy myself. I had a sense of humor. I could laugh things off.
It didn’t solve all my problems, but it greatly improved my quality of life, and SSRI adjustments and related meds have helped through major episodes.
Everybody responds to different medications differently. So yes, some may have very negative effects. But I believe this class of drugs has saved many lives, and improved the lives of many others.

I had horrible side effects from Prozac. I had been adhd but never violent. Prozac made me loose my sanity. I had no control over my emotions. I raged nonstop, couldn't stop. I hurt people. Finally I figured out it might be this drug, because I wasn't like that before. I stopped taking it and I finally regained control of myself. It was a nightmare. I have no idea who the person was that Prozac turned me into.
