Studying in school just to pass the exam isnt the same as learning in your free time to know things long term. The problem is that the workload in school is so heavy, you often dont have time to learn in your free time for long term knowledge, so it makes sense that these days (especially with people relying too much on chatgpt and AI Autocomplete extensions) students graduate and they dont know as much as they should.
its also the fact that in college you cant "fail", the best way of learning is to fail at it a bunch and learn from your mistakes. But you cant do that in college because you're not gonna graduate, so you're forced to just memorize crap that you forget anyways, instead of taking the time to iterate on mistakes
