Well… to be fair about Michelle Yeoh, in Sun Brothers, when she played a Taiwanese immigrant moving to the States, every time she spoke, I was like, “Wait, what? That sounds like who she is in real life-a Malaysian with a Cantonese background.”
In the Hollywood world, like how British actors work hard to portray American characters (or vice versa), I feel that mastering the accent is the most basic effort an actor should put in. Otherwise, every time I watched Sun Brothers, as a Taiwanese, the moment she opened her mouth, I was taken out of the scene… thinking, “Oh no, this is our first representative in Hollywood?”
I mean, would you see someone playing an Italian character suddenly speaking with a British accent, or someone portraying a French character but sounding Australian?
…uh… anyway, I guess until East Asians’ English becomes as natural as their mother tongue, and we can produce international media content with our unique identity, Hollywood probably won’t be able to tell the difference between Asians or Chinese people.
