Put a small hook on the back weedless style instead of the split-ring and your hook up ratio will go up a good deal. Over 40% considering several fish will just grab the tail and then spit it out. You'll catch smaller fish as well but you won't lose as many big fish either though. You can put a nail weight in the end as well and it will help with the depth but changes the action a little but still works good.
My girlfriend made a lure just like this years ago. She would sit there and play with all my used soft plastics. She balled up worms and put line through them and said make it like a puppet on a string LOL. I never used it. Well, there it is!
Yall.should make em.an sell em karl I love my monthly mtb subscription to see this in it would through me out on the water an the fish will also get pulled out lol
My issue with this rig is the free floating hook. I feel like on a good hook set you'll just tear the tubing out of the worm before you transfer enough energy to drive that hook. I could be wrong but that's what I feel like would happen.
Still best if all weight is at the front so inertia helps flex the worm. Rod pointed at the worm with slack taken up before setting with no stretch lines should bury that hook
A buddy of mine who is a trout fisherman called me this morning to tell me he just saw this rig as I was watching your video of it. Synchronicity. He wants to try it ice fishing this winter, in Maine. I'm going to try it for bass here before the ice. Thanks for sharing.

Great video thanks! I watched the same Japanese video 2 weeks ago!... Instead of pushing the tubing through at a 90 degree angle, he pushed it through at a 60 degree angle... I believe it's the exact same Japanese guy but probably an updated video after he experimented a bit... Believe me, that way the worm has way more action since the line glides through the worm with less resistance!... Thanks for the great video, you won yourself a new subscriber! 👍👍👍
This is the only way my uncle used to fish soft plastics worms. Not the exact same set up but same idea. He used the little gas station coffee stir straws and instead of a split ring he used another hook. It works. He always caught them on it.
the only thing i would do different is putting an o-ring right there where the hook is at instead of putting a hook right through the worm. This will probably save you tons of worms.
Really cool, I’m sure that will catch those finicky fish. I like your idea of a second hook rather than the split ring, probably would help hookup percentages. Thanks for sharing.

I saw this yesterday on a Japanese fishing channel. The rigging looks a little complex. In the one I saw they rigged a Zoom Swamp Crawler. It looks like an inch worm or a mosquito larvae under water. hey Matt, looks like a very cool rig to try! I agree with you about putting a small Neko weight on the tail since that would actually allow more curl action. I put together this rig after watching the Japanese video. Couple cons: - the split ring will eventually pull through the plastic. So maybe better to use tubing? - easier to gut hook fish. If you are fishing at a catch and release place, this probably ain’t the best lure. - it will only last a few fish at most. The way is skin hooked it’ll rip the plastic on the worm pretty easily.
One thing that might work well for the tube is fuel line. I have a gas powered weed wacker, blower and hedge trimmer. They all use 2 different sized fuel on each machine. One is a feed line the other is an over flow tube. One hose is very small, the other is tiny. Might work well. The kit comes with both sizes.
Rigged a 5" senko. Tied the hook to the line with a palomar and left an inch and a half of slack. 2/0 Owner mosquito. Still wiggled. Didn't try it long. Two takes, no hookup. We caught 18 yesterday on a tough bite. Someone on another post suggested the hook on a dropper and skin hooked. Also after fishing it a while the split ring pulls through the worm. Have a good weekend.
