Forget reducing fuel duty. SCRAP THE ROAD FUND LICENCE/annual car tax/whatever they are calling it these days, they keep changing the name. I am a low mileage driver, I need my car. Only yesterday I took my infirm 89 year old neighbour for a 19 mile round trip to a specialist unit to have bloods taken because doctors won't take blood anymore. The journey is an impossibility by public transport. My fuel works out at just under 15 pence per mile. My £295 road fund licence will cost me more than 30 pence per mile this year. Scrap the road fund licence and increase fuel duty to cover the lost tax. There is no point in trying to reduce your mileage because the lower your mileage the greater the cost per mile of the road fund licence. I know the same applies to insurance and depreciation but abolition of the road fund licence would help. How about dramatically cut the cost of MOT tests and go to the Continental system of only once every 2 years ? An elderly person doing 800 miles a year, that £48 or £54 annual charge is 6 pence per mile. Every little helps as the old woman said whilst piddling in the sea.
Find a way to tax EVs to make sure that their drivers do not get a free ride. There are public car parks where you can park for free whilst charging. My local town centre car park is a pound an hour or part thereof. Park for 1 hour 32 minutes, that is a little over £1.30 per hour. It can take 1 hour 32 minutes to charge an EV up to 98 or 99%. The charge rate drops dramatically as you attempt to squeeze in those last few kWhs, therefore the cost of charging per minute drops and drops, so, if you want to wander round the town why not take advantage and charge almost to full and save yourself £2 in parking charge. Council tax payers have paid for this. As we have seen so many EV fires whilst overnight charging on driveways or in private garages, let's ban home charging and force them to use public chargers, thereby, forcing them to pay the full cost. EVs continue to be powered by coal for the time being. The only reason that we are still burning as much coal as we are at the moment is because the grid cannot keep up with increasing demand placed on it by EVs.
Drax is burning woodchips brought from Canada. The excuse is that it is carbon neutral because as the trees are cut down to be burnt, new ones are being planted. This ignores the fact that petrol chainsaws are being used to cut down the trees, Diesel bulldozers are being used to drag the logs to logging roads. Heavy grossly inefficient American diesel engined lorries are being used to get the logs to places where they are mashed up (more energy) to be crushed into pellets suitable for Drax. More diesel is being used to transport the pellets to port. Ships are then making a 28,000 mile round trip via the Panama Canal from British Columbia to the Humber (there is no return cargo) using heavy fuel oil which gallon for gallon emits 3,500 times more sulphur into the atmosphere than the diesel that I am permitted to use in my car. When they finally stop using German coal imported into the Country rather than our own coal thanks to Margaret Thatcher, (Radcliffe on Soar is due to close on 30th September), they will trumpet "LOOK how clean we are !" and import even more wood chips from British Columbia. EVs will then be running on filthy dirty wood chips. The great majority of EVs are run in countries which intend to burn coal for decades into the future including, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, much of Africa, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Australia. Then we have the big ones .... China, Pakistan, India, and Indonesia (pop 275 million], all of whom are building new coal fired power stations to provide the electricity for the growing demand from the increasing numbers of stupid EV owners. The great majority of EVs across the World run on coal and if the EV fad continues, will do for decades.
I have an answer. For the benefit of the environment, we should keep our old cars on the road for as long as possible until we can make the transition to hydrogen internal combustion cars. As, on average, more pollution is created in the manufacture of a new car than the pollution created in the entire driving life of a car, we should still be ensuring convenient access to petrol, diesel, and LPG for as long as is necessary so as to keep our old cars on the road for as long as possible. Instead of subsidising EVs, the installing of EV chargers etc., we should look to subsidising a 1,000 hydrogen filling points spread right across the Country including rural areas ready for the first hydrogen powered cars .
What do you propose to do about Council Tax? in its effect upon those of average and below average incomes, the most regressive tax that we have. For a household with an income of £28,000 per year, council tax of £1,400 per year is an income tax of 5 pence in the pound on every penny of income. If we apply the current personal allowance, the Council Tax is the equivalent to an extra 9.1 pence in the pound on income tax. For a household on £140,000 a year a Council tax of £3,500 is only 2.5%. If we add the income tax allowance, it becomes a income tax of 2.74% ..... 2.74%, extra income tax for the rich, 9.1%. for those on average income. Dramatically reduce Council Tax and put the loss of income onto VAT. For those on average incomes, by the time that mortgage or rent, utility bills, food AND COUNCIL TAX is paid, there is very little left for standard VAT goods. The rich spend LOADS on standard VAT goods .... far more on clothes, expensive cars, holidays, fancy TVs, iphones, sky subscriptions etc than those on average and below average incomes. Remember, Council Tax is where it is because Gordon Brown increased it way, way above the rate of inflation in order to drag millions of working people into his great grey-green, dirty, filthy, stinking, slimy swamp of means tested benefits in order to threaten them in 2010, "You might not like us very much anymore, but don't you think you should stay close to nurse through fear of something worse ? You are getting your wages topped up with my lovely means tested benefits especially if you have kids. If you can't remember what Margaret Thatcher did to people in receipt of means tested benefits, then ask your Mum ans Dad." Of course, he did not mention that they were in means tested benefits because of the increases in Council Tax, the increases in TV licence tax, the ridiculously low income tax threshold etc. ...... AND HE NEARLY GOT AWAY WITH IT ..... DIDN'T HE ?
What are you going to do about parking charges (as you know, a nightmare in Cornwall) ? Another regressive tax on the poor who have to have a car because they cannot afford to travel on our grossly expensive public transport and is often the only way to get to work. I spend a lot of time in Slovakia with moja milovaná (my beloved). Train fares average 7.5 pence per mile. (You can book if you want but it is no cheaper). From our village, we have 24 buses a day to our local town. The three mile journey costs 30 Eurocents (25.5 pence). Outside of Bratislava, parking is free almost everywhere. When I tell Slovaks what it costs us to park at hospitals, they are horrified , "NO, NO ! You cannot charge people to PARK at the hospital ! BOŽE !!! (God !!!). Incidentally, parking is also free in the railway/bus station car park .... for days if you want.

Hi Roger. Unfortunately, you are not my candidate, but I am supporting Reform UK. The wind noise made it difficult for me to hear what you had to say. However, what I did here, made a lot of sense. Perhaps get a piece of equipment called a dead cat, to put over your microphone. it will eliminate the wind noise. Good luck on Thursday. ❤️🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧❤️

(Andy replying for Roger) - Thanks to be 100% honest Steve, we did not have a lot of time, I have a dead cat and all proper camera equipment however for speed I just filmed everything on my iphone, Sorry about the wind noise, although I think that was mainly only in Perranporth the other places I thought it was ok. And that is why I added the captions above too. Roger really wanted a video or two to show local people he had been to visit their areas (he has been to these areas many times) and I had the idea to give a policy at each stop as I think Reform UK's policies are great and that would be a fun way of sharing them. Thanks for your feedback and support, we really do appreciate it.
