  • This is the game that will live forever in my memory. Valentines Day in 1984, Arkansas on less than 24 hours rest beats the number one team in the country, led by Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins in Pine Bluff because Dean Smith wouldn't agree to come to Barnhill Arena!

McQuire, Sutton, Smith, Enberg all are gone. 38 years ago they all looked fairly young. This was played in Spring of my senior year at Arkansas. Time flies. Sutton coached one more season after this at Arkansas then left for KY. I loved Sutton. Good man. Remember him showing me, Barry Thomas and Mark Calcagni the SWC Championship rings in a case before he handed them out to the team in '83.

Wow, I've never seen this. A buddy and I drove in from Memphis for this game, met a guy from my hometown for tickets. What an atmosphere.

This game was actually played on February 12, not the 14th, but was dubbed "Balentine's Day" by the Razorback Nation

McGuire trying to will that last shot in from Carolina. Shouting "its good" before the ball even reaches the rim. The basketball elites were shocked to their core that their blue blood favorite team could actually lose to Arkansas. And in Pine Bluff at that😂

Aguirre said many years later his "it's good" meant it's a good look & shot at the basket considering the short amount of time north Carolina had left to set up a shot, of course that's bullshit but still I thought I would give his side since he's no longer with us.
As for Balentine yes he made a good shot under pressure but that play is ALL made by the great Alvin Robertson. Robertson drew the defense & like a wishbone QB makes the quick dish over to an open Balentine. Seems like yesterday when this happen, because the memory is so vivid. What a game! The biggest regular season victory for Arkansas basketball ever in my opinion.

Tied I would say by 2 other games.....stopping Phi Slams Jama's three year unbeaten rampage through the SWC that carried them to 3 straight Final Fours , at Barnhill Arena that same season....AND.... going to to Rupp Arena our first year in the SEC and snapping the Wildcats long home conference winning streak which helped Big O & MayDay capture their 4th straight conference championship!

What he meant was...or so he later said....was that the shot was LAUNCHED before the clock expired so it counted.

Pine Bluff Convention Center. What an odd place to hold this game. Barton Coliseum existed in 1984...they could have totally had the game there. I think Pine Bluff had a nicer facility at the time than Little Rock did.

I could not stand Al McGuire as a basketball commentator with his close-minded viewpoints on how the game 'should' be played, nor his incessant fawning over players from 'establishment' programs like Kentucky, Indiana, UCLA and of course, North Carolina. For all his game long Tarheel cheerleading, he deserved every ounce of raw egg Arkansas left on his face after they pulled off this monumental upset.

Michael Simpson No I'm certain Arkansas had just beat SMU, literally the day before. Then had trouble actually making it to Pine Bluff for the north Carolina game on time because of weather, still flew in suspect conditions. Someone sure didn't know how to schedule because it could have ended in a tragedy. Hopefully Frank Broyles fired whoever was responsible for that amateur BS.

@@averydaymond1560 Actually, you can blame Dean Smith AND NBC for this one. Both CBS and NBC had been trying to schedule Heels/Hogs as a mid-season game in Fayetteville for years as a return game for Hogs/Heels in Greensboro in 79-but Smith refused to play in Barnhill. NBC also had a habit of shoehorning Sunday national games back to back with a conference game-scheduling like that wouldn't fly today
