got the exact same bivvy bag mate, its good, unsure if mines the XL. I'm 5ft9 and iv got loadsa room in it. nice and light. unsure about using it on its own in a downpour. held up fine against snow and sleet and hail. to keep the bugs and slugs etc out i use a mini bug net tent that goes over the entire bag and can be staked out around it with a valance going underneath the bivvy. you can then pull the head end of the net tent up and guy it out to a tree, trekking pole etc. very light and packs down to size of a coke can. cheap as chips too. atb Tom.
I got the large so i can get my Thermarest in with the sleeping bag. Ive just got a TW Mozzie Tent to go under my tarp. ( www.twhammocks.co.uk/Bug-Attack-Protection/Mozzie-Tent ) to keep the slugs and bugs out. Looking forward to trying that out. atb macker
Nice review. I've placed an order for the Hunka XL and it just arrived today. I'm actually pretty impressed with the how small it compacts down to and how light weight it was. Question, does the drawstring on the built in pouch actually seals up all the way after packing it? Mine doesn't, and I'm beginning to wonder if mine had been sewn defectively. I can pull the string to a certain extent, but it does close up like a regular stuff sack.
+birdbrainZ Mines the same. Its because the drawstring is only on one side of the pouch as the bag itself makes up the other side. Never had any problems with it coming open in my pack. Just the way its designed.
A superb review Macker. I am considering the Alpkit Hunka XL and Snugpak Special Forces bivvy bags as lighter weight replacements for my army issue goretex bag which is great but bulky and heavy. Your review has been very helpful. Thank you. Paul :)
Macker's Outdoor Gear Reviews and Wild Camping Thank you Macker....without having both bivvy bags side by side and being able to try them both out its a toss of a coin at the moment lol. How has your Hunka faired over time?
Macker's Outdoor Gear Reviews and Wild Camping That is how I intend to go Macker...groundsheet under bivvy and tarp over top similar to how I use my military bivvy. It's looking like the Alpkit Hunka XL for me. Thank you :)
I was considering this to replace my British army gortex bivy bag as its a 1/3 of the weight and 1/2 the size looks good this is the best review of it so far might be my next purchase
So far Ive always used the Hunka under a tarp when its rained. Dont think it could be sealed well enough at the head end to risk it on it own in a downpoor.
Hi Macker...I think it breaths well. And it's nice and light and big. Alpkit are good homegrown designers of gear. It would be nice for an opening to the side. For the price as you say it's very good. ATB Mark. P.S I find stuffing it tricky...fills with air.
+WyeExplorer Thanks Wye. I agree, a side opening would be great. Might be difficult to keep it waterproof though. Having to get in and out at the end is a bit of a pain when you need a pee in the middle of the night. Think most bivy bags are the same.
Macker's Outdoor Gear Reviews I have seen bivvy bags with space to the side. Can't recall the brand or make but I have seen them. This is a good bag though...Ihave one and it has served me well. Any way, all the best Mate. Mark.
+Macker's Outdoor Gear Reviews Hi Mack..returned to this one. I was speaking to Alpkit today and asked them if you could re-proof it with Nikwax. They said it is well and good to do so. We can therefore prolong its life so to speak and improve performance when needed. Thought you might like to know. All the best. Mark.
Macker's Outdoor Gear Reviews Ha ha yeah. It's been wet for sure. I feel for the land workers. Not a lot you can do with this wet ground. Info share a pleasure...ATB Mark.
never tried a bivvy bag but looked at these before so might invest in one. what tarp would you recommend. I thought about a hammock also just wondered if you have used one if so which one. great review. atb kev
Thanks kev. I use a DD Hammocks medium tarp (3.5m x 2.4m) over my bivvy bag. I prefer ground dwelling to hammocks but DD Hammocks are really good as are tenth wonder hammocks.
thanks for the video, just taken delivery of the XL and a sleeping mat, this video was super useful in knowing how to pack into the sack!

Thank you. Short & to the point. You still happy with it? I would use it without a tarp. The current ones have the sealed seems

Very lightweight and compact Bivvy Bag and great value for money. Nice vid Andy.

Thanks Paul. Be interested to know which one you go for.

Mine is still in good condition. I always have a ground sheet underneath and a tarp over the top when I use it so it doesn't get to hard a life.

I m considering the same.. But breathability and taped seams is my biggest concern..
very nice bit of kit! Love Alpkit gear, and ive had my eye on that XL bivvi for a while now. All the best!
+jediknightofthewoods Thanks Jed.
Nice review macker, I've been looking at the Alpkit XL Bivi for a while now, looks a good bag. Atb Glenn.
Have you field tested this in the rain yet?

Cheers Mark. Good to know that mate. Hoping to use the Hunka a fair bit this year, as soon as everywhere round here stops looking like a swamp.

Spark protection for your sleeping bag? What do you think?
Id have to say not. The Hunka is made of nylon so sparks will melt small holes in it if its close to a camp fire.
Looks like a great piece of kit atb Dave
the XL is great, the regular size one is just too small for me :)
how big/tall are you?
@@SantosAl about 6ft and medium build.
@@TacBlades thanks for the quick reply mate. You're a champ.

thanks for that, at the moment I just use tents but want to feel what its like in the open air, might give it go. atb kev
looks good andy
any internal condensation issues ?
I havent had any myself. But I am a cold sleeper, which leaves me less prone to this problem.
@@mackersoutdoorstuff5235 cool, cheers mate.
Looks cool 👍
Great. Thank you.
nice but all the insects...
I always worry more about the slugs lol.
Rubbish review. Showed nothing, and told us what you’ve done with it. Means nothing pal.
You knob. It showed me what it looks like, how it packs and unpacks and gives a buy or don’t. Pretty useful I’d say.
Not a great review in my opinion
