How to Install a Framed Bamboo Friendly Fence

- Bamboo Fencer teamed up with John Novak of Novak Landscape Design to install a framed Bamboo Friendly Fence to block an unsightly boat in his neighbor's yard. Fence panels are available at www.bamboofencer.com
I built this almost exactly as you describe about 2 years ago. I used 4x4 posts since that was what was available at Lowe’s. Because 4x4s didn’t allow enough depth to contain the bamboo in the frame, I simply attached a 2x4 of corresponding height to each fence post on the back. I used dark bamboo, but realized that the stain used by the dealer (bamboo company in California) faded quickly. So, I just used more dark stain, then used marine polyurethane to seal and make a bit shiny. Still looks great. Offers privacy to our pool, and I’ve had comments regarding how “professional” the fence looks. I’m going to build another one, starting today. Thanks for sharing your experience. How is the poly seal holding up? I was considering doing the exact same treatment but couldn't find much information online about this. It made sense to me but I figured I would ask someone who has actually done this before.

You can cover the chain link fence with the bamboo.

One word of caution though. I ordered the 1" thick bamboo and some of the bamboo was as thick as 1 1/2". Visually it's no problem, but it did affect the calculation a little from front to back of each panel. Also, although I built this almost entirely myself (and I'm a 52 year old 110lb woman, I did need help lifting the bamboo onto the temporary rail during install, so a helper is advisable!).
Carla , what was your prior experience level? I want to do this. Out of budget limitation, as in I have no money saved for hiring.... LOL... But do have tools galore...
Sandra Parisi Sandra, you can do this! You’ll need exactly the tools and screws you see the man in the video using. So take it step by step, take your time, and enlist a helper to move the bamboo rolls and set the posts. Hopefully your soil is not too hard or rocky so that you can use simple a post hold digger to dig your holes.

I will have to lower it some as I can only go 4 feet. how long are your 5x5's and how many inches did you put into the ground? I have well draining sandy soil. I think I would need Quikrete. We have an existing 3' chainlink fence with 6' bamboo roll affixed to it (by the previous homeowners). Is there a way to frame out this existing fence using the existing chainlink posts for support?
does the cedar need to be dipped in tar to keep it from rotting in the ground first?? just asking...🌲🌲🌲

That was very good. Id like to do something similar in Australia but live in a very hot climate and am being careful not to stop breeze flow as I face East. The breeze is a life saver here. Do you find it stops breeze?

Hi, I have a question if you can answer? I put up this same style bamboo fence about 8 years ago modelled after yours here. Great idea! It looked great afterwards and has withstood lots of wind. I used cedar for the uprights and for the horizontal sections. And I painted all of the boards. However, the horizontal boards have rotted and care literally crumbling away. My question is: What type of wood did you use for the horizontal trim pieces? Thank you
My brick wall was damage by my neighbour,so took it down it was over 8 ft.,and have not replaced it since, because the formation base is bricks,
If you're using another type of wood, do you have to install it in cement to prevent wood rot?
That fence will rot out because it's untreated cedar if you want to prevent that I recommend using cooper green on the part that is going to be in the ground but otherwise just use pressure treated wood and I recommend putting it in concrete anyways it makes for a more rigid fence

Just wondering, when you drilled into the Bamboo to make it tight against the frame, did you screw into every piece of Bamboo, or 1 in 10? 1 in 20? Many thanks for the informative video. I just might take this project on.

Use galvanized steel shoes in concrete, impregnated timber and carbonized bamboo and it will last for 30 years. The screws and nails you drove in from the top will drill water pipes into the wood. Nevertheless, I like the construction, shape and finishing. It looks solid and neat.

Missy Rabbit, I suspect it will last a very long time. I've made several garden features in my garden with home-grown bamboo and they've lasted for years and years. And I live in SW France where we've been having lots of unprecedented storms. No treatment necessary. Bamboo is naturally insect repellent. Very strong and flexible.

This is Bamboo fencing is PERFECT for covering the back of our neighbors hideous fence. We are going to use the existing metal poles that are sunk in cement. Where can we get 4 or more panels of the rolled bamboo fencing that is capped at the top?

Jason Branson concrete kills the life span of the posts. It traps water and causing faster decay

I went to a lumber yard and asked for a 5x5 post and they looked at me like I was stupid and on drugs and some old timer who worked their said he had never even heard of a 5 x 5 post. I live in Oregon.

Seems like all bamboo has a slight inconsistency to the diameter. Some smaller diameters mixed in there."the nature of the bamboo business "so probably will get the one inch.those 3/4 inch rolls seem to have probably some half inch peices mixed in there.Lol.the one inch more likely to have " acceptable thiner pieces" Lol

seems a shame to spend all that money on a bamboo fence and not use bamboo poles to support it. Now it looks like a half bamboo/ half regular wood fence.
+bill bixby Yes i agree wrap the posts in durable plastic before burying the posts….even a shrink wrap would be ideal and trim above the ground line after backfilling.
