  • As a Disney performer, the idea of turning 30 always felt like the kiss of death. There are many reasons for my fear of aging, but being an ex-princess may be the biggest one. I have a lot of work to do to rebuild a healthy relationship with the concept of getting older. This poem is part of that healing. In it, I wanted to express how time does not exist at Disney. Not in any real way. Time is manufactured and manipulated. You enter a world of fantasy, and the real clock stops ticking. You know what to expect. The fireworks will always go off. Tinker Bell will always fly. The princesses will always be the same age. Working in this environment blurred the feeling of time passing for a lot of us. We woke up one day and we were "old". I loved my job more than I can say, and I miss it every single day. But it's time to learn that 30 isn't the end.

Saw you on a Gianmarco Soresi standup video, thought your situation sucked then, but hearing you in the middle of processing all this age-related crap... I freaked out when turning thirty not because thirty was old, but in my twenties I could say "Well, in ten years, I'd still be in my thirties and that's not so bad!" and all of the sudden, 10 years from now became a vision of an unaccomplished, unremarkable man in his forties. For what it's worth, my thirties have been less filled with pain than my twenties - the same heartaches and emotional wounds come and go, but they don't sting as sharply - and I notice myself being... more myself than I was a decade ago, more for the better than for the worse. I wish you the same epiphanies and joys of self-revelation in your thirties and that the storm of "aging" you've endured from that "magic" kingdom is quieted by a truly royal and brave heart of a powerful woman coming into her own. Keep at it, Saoirse, you are doing well, you are enough. -From a stranger on the internet-

The older you get, the older 'old' gets. It's only a number after all. Have a great Birthday !

My thirties were like a "remastered' version of my twenties, with bonus experiences. The 30s are a time when you'll encounter the prime of your life, enjoy.

Hey, seemed inactive on Twitter, so this seems the best place to drop it, since I also have another piece of feedback here :3
    1. Your link.tree links to the anthologies where your content appears appear to be broken.
    2. I know I at least would find it helpful if the spoken word pieces had in their description a transcription of their content - the poems or the flash-fiction. I always do better parsing poetry when I can read it, and I'm sure there are others such as myself. While you can use the Google Transcription service, it doesn't account for line breaks, which can make or break (ha!) poetry.
    Best regards.

Your poetry is fantastic, but that clicking is so distracting. People should refrain until the end and clap appropriately when you're finished.

Glad you like the poem! Trust me, when you’re doing an open mic, the snapping is VERY appreciated. We call it feeding the poet. There is nothing more terrifying than performing to a bunch of blank silent faces 😱 it’s also really helpful to hear what people respond to because it allows us to make good editing choices as we keep writing 😄
