FUNDING CAMPAIGN CASE FOR SUPPORT
For more than 130 years Wellspring Lutheran Services has been impacting communities across Michigan with services and programs that engage people with various needs. Since its inception, Wellspring has actively sought out unmet needs and worked to fill them - now serving 12,000 people each year in more than 50 of Michigan’s 83 counties.
Wellspring Lutheran Services is once again being called to step in and preserve important programs in Saginaw County that serve a growing population of adults with lifelong cognitive, mental, and physical disabilities. This is a result of Wisconsin-based AbleLight announcing its intent to exit its work in Michigan, impacting 24 vulnerable people who are without additional options. AbleLight’s main driver for this decision was the chronic financial losses incurred and an inability to address them properly from another state. A local, faith-based provider was preferred as they announced their exit.
People with lifelong disabilities of this type require daily services that include supportive independent living where staff queue and support the most independent living as possible. Services also take on a more direct care role with staff providing significant support for clients’ daily living activities, including dressing, bathing, grooming and nutrition. Clients enjoy rich lives that include meaningful activities, community outings and events, as well as regular worship and Bible study programs.
As Wellspring assessed this opportunity, we were “Stirred to Help.” And we recognize that to be successful in turning these programs around, we will need additional community support funding to assure continuity of services while also investing in the future.
Having successfully stepped in to preserve struggling programs in the past, Wellspring is experienced and understands the task at hand. Experience informs us that stabilization and turnaround of this nature will require three years of focused stewardship, being careful to avoid financial cuts to the core of the programs and the resultant impact on staff.
To assure success, the Wellspring Board of Directors has authorized a campaign to raise $400,000 over a 3-year period. Up to $250,000 to be pledged over three years will allow Wellspring to stabilize the programs, while maintaining the strong and loving culture between staff and clients. An additional $150,000 will allow expansion at the Mayer Road home in Frankenmuth to include private rooms for all clients and a general upgrade to outdated finishes.
From the earliest assessment, it was clear to Wellspring that stepping in to preserve these programs to support vulnerable people was the right thing to do. It was equally clear that to be successful, the support of the community was essential. This campaign will allow needed community support to translate into strong programming for decades to come.
