I've been to Japan 4 times. But with the help of friends I avoided many of the mistakes you made on this trip. I estimate you spent about $700 more than you should've, maybe even more. I would've gotten the 7 day JRPass and saved the first use for the bullet train and used SUICA for the first 3 days. At least that's how I planned it. The mistake of losing one of your JRpass was a large extra expense. And when I looked for accommodations I did a LOT of research and asked others. I found a nice family hotel in Mejiro, about 2 train stops from Shinjuku. Total stay for 13 days was $450. Other than that, the amount you spent sounds about right. I splurged more on food instead of getting souvenirs. I only had so much room in my luggage😂😂.
I agree, the 7 day JR Pass would've saved a couple hundred if we did more research T_T. Our thought process was that we could use it around Tokyo, but it definitely wasn't worth. Losing a JR Pass was a bonus lesson learned lol!😭 13 days for $450 is way cheaper than ours, less than half of what we paid! We'll need to do more research on lodging for our next Japan trip. Thanks!
@@doki-_-7002 it was $35 a night for me solo. It was a small family run style hotel. Like 20 rooms total in an old neighborhood in Mejiro. But I know friends who have gotten Airbnb cheap and shared the cost. So it can actually be cheaper if you shop around. One year I stayed in a capsule hotel in Asakusa that cost me $18 a night, but it was for a maximum of 5 days only. I had to move to other places for the remainder of my trip. That was $55 a night for 3 nights in one place, then another capsule for $25 for another 3 nights. So yeah, if you don't mind old style places with paper thin walls, tatami rooms and futons, and an old lady with no English whatsoever tending the front desk. It wasn't a 4 star hotel but it was quaint and the staff were very nice and clean.
@@doki-_-7002 this place had 4 shower stalls and 2 toilets and a onsen next door that was like ¥600 extra per use for 20 minutes. So it was "shared" but it wasn't bad. It was a new experience for sure but I was all immersed into the Japan experience, so I loved it.
Great and very details video. Really enjoy it. Thank you so much for posting this. We are planing our Japan’s trip next Summer around June.. I hope the weather was nice
Thank U! I am a mature female traveler who wants to travel Solo in Japan for 2 weeks - Tokyo and Kyoto for the longest period plus Osaka - I want to backpack and just enjoy the slow trip of my dream.. been to South Korea 7 times now I want to visit Japan again.. not just 12 hours transit like in 1998
I was in Japan with family and friends at pretty much the same time as you were. Japan was a blast. The culture was awesome, and the food was amazing. I’m going back this November.
hmmm,.... if you ever go back there is a JAL hotel very close to Haneda airport which is really good,... it's business class so the service and cleanliness are great ...
Well i guess i splashed more in Japan total trip. Tokyo dome hotel 6night including breakfast 1395$ for family of 4, Osaka Marriott 5night 2433$ including breakfast and alot of shopping , disneyland, disneysea, universal studio, Helicopter tour, Mt fuji full day and many other good spots all over in Japan
Your travel video showcased the hidden gems of Japan beautifully! Speaking of travel, have you heard about the new V4 of the Bento Bag from Nomad Lane? I believe it could be a valuable addition to your future travel adventures.
Good video! 👍 We want to do a similar trip except we will also go north to visit family in Yamagata/Akita for a few days. I have been to Osaka and Kyoto before and if you ever go back, stop at Himeji to see the White Castle which is one of only twelve original castles left in Japan. Smaller, but very impressive and difficult to climb! With the 70% JR pass price increase later this year, losing the pass ticket will be a bigger fear for me next year. 😱
Thanks! Feel free to ask if you have any questions about a spot. Woah we didn’t know about the 12 original castles, super cool! We’ll have to look into that for the next trip. Wish the JR pass could at least be a card instead of a flimsy piece of paper lol.
@@UghTakeMeBack With the JR pass increase, I hope they do make it an IC card or even pay-by-phone. Ridiculous right now because a 7-day pass is basically a paper $200 bill the size of your thumb. 🤦♂
Great video. Working my way to south east Asia, was considering a 10 day in Japan. Going to a hard pass this time, no real interest in the scenery and culture. Hello BKK, on my way!!!
We're planning on going next year. Trying to see the Sakura trees and all highlighted spots of Japan. Starting in Tokyo march 24th or 25th. Hoping that will be the perfect date to not miss the blossoms. Hope the forecast is similar to this year?
We are planning on starting our 10-11 day trip in Tokyo on the same days then headed to Kyoto/Osaka! Hoping to get lucky with the perfect cherry blossoms!
Great video. Do you think it's feasible to do the waterfalls and the view to the mountain in one day coming from Tokyo? Without staying in the town you moved to..
12:20 lol why the voiceover change to a queer gentleman from a 1940's spy tale? Great video though, I like the budget add up as you go through and the fast-pace so it's watchable
LOL I was using a free ai voice generator and ran out of downloads so I had to find another one. The spy was was the best one I could find that didn’t sound too robotic.
Hello, thanks for the video. Do you think waking up early is the best way to avoid the crowd during peak tourist season like April? Also, were you disappointed not seeing full bloom of cherry blossom? (I'm planning a trip to Japan April next year as well)
Waking up early is definitely the only way to avoid crowds, especially in Kyoto. We were a little disappointed about the cherry blossoms since that was part of the reason we went in April, but the trip was still great! We actually had more cherry blossom sites in our itinerary but we adjusted our plans.
Very enjoyable but it's very fast I loved Tokyo and kyotobut preferred kanazawa where we met a real Geisha so grest on our first trip she stopped sat with us and talked a little but made kanazawa the best😅😮😅
Great video! Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!
Best trip report video. I love the specific time frame info. Super helpful for creating a realistic itinerary
Thanks we really appreciate it! We tried making the video practical for people who are trying to plan their trip

450$/13nights per person or per room of 2-3? I was thinking about going to AirBNB found place 5min train from tokyo 70$/night for up to 4 people.

can someone tell me how to get to Mt Fuji from Tokyo using JR Pass? and from Fuji, is it best to get back to Tokyo or go to Osaka or Kyoto. Thanks!
