- It's such a shame this historic building has been left to end up in such a sad state. Built in 1889. Unfortunately some of it has been demolished due to being "dangerous" and it also has fire damage, and only a small amount remains of what it once was. I've tried my best to film every bit of detail left I could find to give you an idea of what it looked like.
Information:
Originally called the Jubilee Hall, the building was erected as a new town hall through public subscription. It displays a curious mix of Scots baronial and Germanic styling. The building's corbelled turrets and pinnacles were removed in 1937, when it was converted into the Ritz Cinema by Alexander Cattenach. The battlements, machiolations, niches, rope-mouldings and round-headed entranceway survive however.
I fell in love with films and cinemas in that place. I grew up in Linlithgow, and used to go there on Saturday afternoons for the matinees, sometimes using the deposits on glass bottles to get in. That's not a joke - two bottles would get you a ticket and a drink.
When it closed down, you had to travel to Falkirk or Edinburgh to see a film - the old Odeon and ABC theatres near Falkirk Grahamston station - and I am truly sad to see the level of disrepair it fell into - and the fact even the front is now going or gone. If Bo'ness could get the Hippodrome reopened, how did we fail to do it here?
Thank you for this at least you have archived it as it has now gone. Its a shame the did not pull down those hideous 1970s houses that blight the centre of the town instead.
What a shame that a place that must have had such history and hold such memories has been left to rot like that. Thanks for sharing.
See the ashtrays on the back of the seats, used to love smoking in the pictures and seeing the projector cutting through the fog.
Ive been in there lots of times Tina when i was a kid staying at my grans. They made the bottom hall into an video arcade & slot machine room.
wow great vid again.you have natural talent for urban exploration
that stained glass window is awesome! must have been a great place in it's day, damn shame places like this are left to rot :p
Well there's sort of a roof...they've demolished the back half (where the screen would be) leaving the entire wall missing so you can see inside even from a distance. They demolished it because it was dangerous and left the safe bit intact, but now it's open to the elements getting into even more of a state
These are fantastic. You go into the places im too scared to go.
Another great vid and it reminds me of i used to live across from a cinema that shut down while i was there would have made a great explore but just never occured to me back then....
I know you get alot of comments, but heres another one for the record. I realy like your work.
Thanks Matt :) I tried to find as much as I could of what's left to film
A big thanks for filming and recording such a wonderful cinema .
I just love your videos! They are so well done. You must have such a awesome time checking these places out!! Have fun and be safe
Indeed, the video I watched earlier showed a few seats at the back of the circle and a jungle, that was it!
Another interesting and unusual explore, well put together docu of this urban beauty, topps!
I grew up in Linlithgow and I recall when this was an musement arcade up until the early 1990s. My folks still live in the town and when I was back today I came across a local magazine which showed ambitious plans to return the site back to a cinema. Sadly the plans didn't include the retention of the impressive architecture at the front . I only found out today that the back of the building was removed, I lived in the town up to 2008. The building was sadly doomed from its inception due to unstable foundations; I hope some good comes out of it one day.
Iain Lindsay Well, it seems as if those days will never be coming as planning permission for demolition has been granted and if the plans go ahead then it will simply become flats of no unique form, much unlike that of the existing façade...
Such a shame it's now been bulldozed another piece of historic architecture gone
Another great video, ! Have you ever been caught ???? I.d be shitting myself the places you go in to!
Thank you :)
fascinating documentation ~ mould & decay creating art
Thank you :) I used to be scared to when I first started exploring, so you should give it a try sometime :)
sure is, can't believe they've let it go like this!
very cool!
Such an ashame, to see a place like that get destroyed by people who just dont care. :(
Hey good idea, but couldn't have anything happening to you in there though, hehe, I'd be totally responsible! :o0
just last week i took some up-to-date pics of the outside and it seems he only openings there at the moment are the windows at the top. Looks alarmed at back too :oS
It also just recently had a 'For Sale' sign put up by a seemingly brand new Property Management (family affair) in Kilwinning too. I wonder if the ABC still actually owns the building or if the Council do...
Thank you :) I could have a look at the ABC for you, looks like a tough one to get inside though so will have to try work out a way in :-)
Amazing Vid, Tina. Truly heartbreaking to see the dilapidation of such 'Regal' buildings.
I am desparate to see if someone can get inside the Old King's Theatre (more recently the ABC Cinema in Kilmarnock, closed down in 1999). It's a stunningly beautiful building (IMHO) and has lay derelict for far too long. I would LOVE to see it restored to it's former Theatre glory instead of sold off to some business nitwit who wants to convert it to flats or something even less inspiring.
So so sad...
Thank you very much :) Yeah I'm not happy unless I'm looking around old buildings lol
Epic how'd you manage to get in? Your vids / locations are sick so many ideas
alexander cattenach also designed the playhouse cinema in perth
wow you're lucky Paul! That's cool, wish I could have seen inside. Did you take any photos by any chance? :)
I wonder if they ever showed Highlander there...
yeah it was cool, I found it under the floor of all the seats! I think that is what it must have looked like when it was first built.
Well it wasn't easy put it that way lol You can see it from a distance around back :)
I'll have to look through my computer cause I can't remember. I'll let you know!
Me and my 3 pals broke in there 3 years ago :P
Have you ever found a ghost in one of those places,or see something really weird?
Now that's a dam shame :o(
Where was that?
this reminds me to silent hill downpour
How did you manage to get in here? From the back or something?
I love this vid - is this beautiful building for sale? What's the story? I sincerely hope it will be rescued.
LEDlights
That'd be a damn shame - old cinemas should be rescued, there's a demand nowadays for nostalgia...I hate those modern multiplex boxes.
TheBoweryScum Sadly planning permission for demolition of the building has been granted and depending on the outcome it seems set to become flats, Such a shame.
summerspirit
Shame. Another important part of the social history of the town gone forever.
Flats wont happen
haha yeah it does, I love silent hill! :)
Go visit now (if you want to see some rubbel)
Hmm, shame we didn`t get to see the pros` arch and screen end of the cinema.
Easy explanation - the north end of the building no longer exists and most of the stalls area is covered with fallen timer and rubble, hence the video had to concentrate on what was left - the upstairs seats at the south end.
Wasn`t griping but fair comment all the same. At least you got what you could.
Like a kino den toten
I s'pose asking the owners for permission would be a waste of time...Health n Safety and all the BS?!
:o/
haha yeah maybe! :P
