- Who IS Gex's greatest voice actor? American comedian Dana Gould? British veteran Leslie Phillips? Red Dwarves Danny John-Jules? This is just one of the questions answered as we explore the complete history of the best video game series of all time - Gex!
Join me on a journey starting with the Panasonic 3DO as we take a look at the Gex trilogy, along with chronicling all of Gex's cameos and later game appearances before his unfortunate disappearance.

Considering the TV theme, maybe a remaster name like "Gex: Rerunned" or "Gex: Upscaled" (lol) would work
Very nice! They're getting me at the slim prospect of it happening
Or they could redo the formula a little with Gex in his time away having graduated from his lazy hobby of watching TV to playing video games, the levels being parodies of various game genres and tropes. I think it'd be a hit.
Or a remake my idea make the 1st gex game fully 3D except for cartoon land and uhhhh trying to do a Dana Gould impression and maybe 2 new worlds and Ta da that’s how you make a gex remake
GEX RE-WINDED TRILOGY
@@JohnnyVector Hate to say this, but I thought Leslie Phillips' "British Gex" voice fits more with the Pink Panther... which is not a bad thing, because I hate how Friz Freleng turned the Pink Panther into Jim Carrey in the 90s cartoon.
Hey man, nice review. And thanks for implementing my Behind The Design of Gex: Enter The Gecko video! Personally, I wish that there was a new Gex game...
Oh and p.s. Gex isn’t the James Bond of Gaming. He’s the Austin Powers of Gaming... at least in the U.S.A...
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for uploading the 'behind the design' video. It was fascinating hearing a little bit of behind-the-scenes info about Gex.
@@JohnnyVector I actually found that video on Twitter. And from doing more research, it was actually a part of the fifth episode to the first season of a video game tv show called Electronic Playground (they even have a UA-cam Channel, too).
Regardless, Gex I think gets way too much hate. Even moreso than necessary. Paraphrasing ExoParadigmGamer, he says the following: “For a lot of bad games (or in Gex’s case: considered ‘bad’), The degree of awfulness is usually exaggerated or romanticized for entertainment value. Sure, the games usually are ‘bad’ for the reasons a reviewer (or in Gex’s case streamer-whether it’d be Gextra Life, or any Let’s Player who’s NEVER at all touched the game at all-thus proceeding to bash it ‘because it’s an obscure game’) will describe. Though sometimes, the badness is so oversold, that you might actually be disappointed when you get around to playing it for yourself.”
This game was tripping on shit lol stop signs tun into colorful things to collect and smack their faces on the ground I guess an dancing candy chains like a tree trunk turning into a candy Cain stem in is own right then some sprees Turing into a swirly ice cream.

"When in doubt, lie with Gex."
Any Scott the Woz reference gets an automatic heart in my book
Is it gex night
Don’t lie. I’ve lied before and it’s too fun
@@bottomgear4055 No, it's Gex year.
I've always had a soft spot for Gex. Yeah, I recognize the games' flaws and how dated a lot of it can be, but they were pretty good games all the same.
Absolutely! Thanks for sharing the Gex love
As someone at the right age when this game released, most of the voice clip references were outdated then too. But then again, not outdated. See, back then a TV addict would mostly be exposed to mostly reruns of shows from the 50s through the 80s. So when Gex referenced, say, Petticoat Junction (1963-1970), it didn't seem too odd at the time even though it was technically an old reference. TV and reruns went hand in hand, which with on-demand media, reruns aren't really a thing anymore so a reference from just a few years ago already feels very outdated.
Either way, I really enjoyed the Gex games. They're fun little platforms especially at the time. Would love to see a new title one day. One where I don't think you'd need to make Gex reference like vtubers or something more contemporary. Maybe more 2000s movies and shows at least. But keep those classic references too like Lassie and Star Trek.
Interesting point about reruns. I was raised on Scooby Doo and Looney Tunes, which are both from decades before my time. I wonder if primary school aged kids these days are still watching such old stuff? I doubt it because of how much instant entertainment is out there nowadays.
What a valuable vid! So many people who never grew up with these games won’t know the majesty of experiencing such a unique whacky platformer that wasn’t exactly like Spyro on PS1. Even the camera system (in Gex 2), despite being difficult to get used to, had a knack to it that no other game I know of has.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm happy to see so many people have fond memories of Gex. His series was so unique!
That camera system has costed me countless deaths on the Space Channel levels in Gex 2
I feel like the world needs a new Gex right about now
just reminding everyone that gex has still sold more copies than the persona series
Saying that Gex was a product of his time is both fitting and an understatement: he's too stuck in the 90s (both literally and figuratively) to be relevant today.
Thanks for 'hearting' my comment! By the way, a remade trilogy would make sense, considering other 90s franchises got that treatment.
Haha I see someone's been reading the Wiki! Alot of the ReSaurus information you covered was written by me. The magazine ad scan was also done by me.😉 Good video all around. Although, when discussing Gex in 2015, you forgot to mention the Gex game concept from Sushee Games we almost got. It's fine though. I guess it is an obscure fact. Also, the Keith Richards line is actually one of Dana's lines. Not Leslie's.
Thanks for writing so much good Gex info! I wasn't aware of the Sushee Games concept, I'll have to read up on it.
@@JohnnyVector It's just a single tweet from them. I can link it for you here: twitter.com/SusheeGames/status/1050368812309258244?s=19
Tbh, I think we dodged a bullet on this one. I feel like this take on Gex might've ruined the franchise. Reminds of the whole Young Conker debacle some years back. lol
There is Gex reference in Crash bandicoot 4 ( in final tape level ). Let's send a message to Activision about Gex trilogy remaster!
Glad I grew up with the Gould version
I had no idea IGN did a giveaway on the Resaurus Gex figures, that's awesome! I think if Gex were to get an HD remastered trilogy it'd be called Gex Rerun. But I hold onto the hope that a Gex 4 will hit store shelves and video game e-shops soon. Crash got a 4th game, will Spyro get one too and perhaps Gex? Bubsy got not one but two new games the past decade and he's not that great, so what gives? Anyway, great video :)
Gex Rerun sounds very fitting. I am puzzled about Bubsy's resurrection because the new games looked...not so great. We'll just have to sit around with our fingers cross for more Gex goodness in the future.
I remember playing Gex on the N64 and PS1 respectively...
(Both games I believe were on both systems...)
Yeah that's right, a few minor differences between the PS1 and N64 versions. Gex 64 had a little Titanic-themed bonus level missing from the PS1 version.
Now he works for Geico
I remember enjoying the original game on the PS1 along with its music, though I only understood like, less than half of the references he made as a kid... the later games felt like lost a lot of the charm as he made his way into blocky primitive 3D as the textures and graphics were dumbed down, plus not much of the music stood out for me (except maybe Gex 3's boss music?). Though amusing Gex has had a total of 4 voice actors, while it was mainly consistent in the US with Dana Gould... kinda jarring hearing him go from young American, to a suave old Englishman, to... jive I guess?
I dunno about an HD trilogy rerelease of these, considering how Crash and Spyro are a little more timeless not having many references to pop culture (Spyro's skateboarding referencing the popularity of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater being the only exception I can think of)... Though if Gex does have a sequel of sorts, I can imagine him having a kid, maybe a daughter being more of an internet pop culture sort of character, as TV's pretty much on its last legs these days.
Yes good points, a lot of the humour and references would be painfully dated if they appeared in a remake. For what it's worth, I love the third game's music. The Mystery TV and Anime Channel tracks are great!
@@JohnnyVector similar with me with Gex 1's soundtrack of the horror and cartoon levels, boss and map, along with Rez's final boss fight.
But yeah, considering how horribly dated Gex is with his over-reliance on TV and its pop culture relevance, I feel it'd be better going all next-generation acknowledging his past games but doing something more modern...
or just rebooting it entirely and completely do away with the old premise.
Have dated references to old internet memes and viral videos... plenty of material to work with and make people cringe equally as much as the TV references back then

Awesome video! I had no idea Gex 3 had those secret/unused levels! Personally, my favorite voice is Dana Gould (nostalgia), though I appreciate Leslie Philips. I just feel like the punkie, youthful energy of Dana Gould fits Gex to make him sound like a piece of shit, haha. As for a HD remake, I dunno, but I saw someone mention a name for a sequel. Gex 4: Geckos Never Die sounds like an amazing name.
Thanks! Geckos Never Die sounds good. I think it's probably nostalgia making me favour Philips as well.
What is the game at 1:50? I remember playing it but I cant remember the name at all..
Bubsy
I feel like he would do very well in today's world with references.
Is it just me or does the concept art for Gex 4 remind anyone else of Jak and Daxter?
Good call, I agree
Thanks to MVG we are getting a Gex Trilogy, I'll pre-order my physical copy and lets hope it sells well enough for a sequel :)
And yeah, the british Enter the Gecko voice actor is still the best one imo...

That's a pretty great and well done retrospective for the Gex series. I'm pretty impressed by the research put it and it really highlights the series in a way better light. As someone who loves Gex, it's a real pleasure to watch.

I would totally buy a remake of the first one on Nintendo Switch. Gex was one of the first videogames I ever played all the way back in kindergarten (dad worked at 3D0 so it was our first console).
Thanks for the comment. I think there's definitely a market for the entire trilogy. I wish Square would release it just to test the waters for a future game. Did your dad get any cool Gex gear from 3DO?
@@JohnnyVector Didn't get any gear, but I definitely agree it'd be cool if they tested the waters even if it just meant a quick little direct port of the games that doesn't require them to invest much capital.

Billy West: Hold my beer
The Media Dimension encapsulated this low grade TV aesthetic which I adored, the deeper you got the more nightmarish it got. Rez is one of my favorite villains and I think he is a big part of why I love the Gex series.
Yeah totally, Rez is an underrated villain. He's genuinely pretty creepy.
Gex is coming back with a complete collection!
The game was called "Spintail" but Gex himself was named "Reno". It's weirdly not named after the character over there like the first game was ("Gex").
Thanks, that's interesting. Do you know why the name 'Reno' was chosen? I wonder if it has any particular significance?
@@JohnnyVector Sadyl, I have no idea why the name was chosen. I don't know if he was named after somebody or something.
Interestingly, the Mecharez fight's name there is more accurate to the movie it's parodying: "Renozilla vs Mecha-Renozilla".
Pretty much all the written text in the game was removed. Some of it is replaced with symbols, but most of it is just straight-up removed with no substitute.
It was a really long time ago since I played the Japanese version. I don't even remember what Rez's name was over there for this game.
I love Gex. I would absolutely love a remake of the original trilogy with all the deleted levels and content included, and finally get a Gex 4! :)
i think a funny name for an HD remake collection could be something like “Gex: Reruns” or something similar. or maybe something like “Return of the Gex” or “Gex, Return of the Gecko” could he the name of a new sequel or HD remake collection, serving as a nice reference that its been so long, over 20 years, since Gex has made sort of official appearance.
Gex Return of the Gecko sounds awesome. My ideal future for Gex would be following Crash Bandicoot's lead: a re-imagined trilogy of the original games followed by a totally original one.
Gex rerun trilogy
Nice, I like it!
Send this to Square-Enix!

I remember when I was a kid with my N64, I had Mario 64 and Gex: Enter the Gecko. I always preferred Gex over Mario even though looking back now Mario 64 has aged much better, especially in the controls department (Offering a full 360 degree movement). I had the Leslie Phillips voice (which is still my favorite Gex) and I always preferred Gex's edginess over Mario's super family friendly vibe.
I still hope that one day Square Enix will just put out a cheap throwback trilogy pack on modern consoles with some updated visuals (Resolution, framerate, textures and draw distance, possibly even different voice options for each of the games that featured them) for both Gex as well as something similar for Tomb Raider, but with every passing year I think it's becoming less and less likely that they will.
I think it's going to just remain as a special memory for those who were around to experience it at the time, and I am kind of okay with that.
Thanks for the comment. Philips is my favourite Gex too. It's a shame some series get forgotten about, but we can hope.
When my mom brought home the first 3D Gex for my original PlayStation, I was quite let down, but when I actually saw the disc I was intrigued. I can safely say I had many hours of fun with the game. At the time I didn't know I was taking part in such a legacy. Didn't quite realise I missed out on really great sequels.
Gex could probably do with a reboot for those of us 80s/90s kids.
Thanks for this video. 👍🏾
i remember playing gex 2 as a teenager and hearing that joke about boy george’s pants and thinking “how the hell did that get past the censors”
"Quick, someone call my agent and get me on Love Island"
"Who left gamergate open?"
*Whilst driving a racecar* "Now this is what I call Joycon Drift"
"I before E except before phone"
*In an ice level* "This blizzard is nearly as bad as the company"
14:54 Don't go there, mate. The James Bond codename theory doesn't withstand scrutiny when you consider all the references made in the Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan movies about the death of Bond's wife in George Lazenby's film.
I have all 3 games on my vita and love going back to them to relive childhood memories of this series
Gex had amazing gameplay, fun level design and the character Gex himself was awesome to me as a kid growing up in the States. He was boisterous, funny, crude, and had an attitude. In America we love that lol. To me, hearing Gex with that refined english gentleman accent sounds so ill-fitting.
Haha thanks for your perspective. I kind of like how divisive Gex's British accent is. For me, the American Gex sounds equally odd.
If Gex does return than I hope they would remake all three games and combined them into one, something like Spyro reignited trilogy
It's kinda funny how heavily associated Gex is with the 3DO given his late appearance on the system and very speedy porting to other systems. A lovely summary of the history of Gex with some new info I had never heard of and interesting snippets to ponder over, such as how the pop culture focused reference prevented his enemies having a distinct identity (perhaps it would have been better if some enemies were repeated across levels, but dressed up to match the theme of the level, much like Gex does).
And now, in 2023, we have confirmarion of the remastered trilogy coming soon.😊
Square-Enix should get all the resources from the Gex 4 project and actually MAKE that game...
This video was better than taco night at James Earl Jones’s
I highly prefer the American gex voice but I guess it depends on which version you grew up with

I live in Europe and I really don't like Leslie Phillips performance as Gex. His voice does not match the character at all, that why I imported myself an US version of the game.

For a "Sonic Ripoff", his games are quite unique and good. Would love to see more Gex in the future.
Edit: HOLD UP A MOMENT
I would honestly love to see a return to the gex franchise I don’t care if it’ll never happen a guy can dream I would definitely say gex is the joe the camel of video game mascots he may have been very controversial and inappropriate but he was cool! i still think he deserves a comeback I mean hell if video game characters like bubsy can have a new game regardless of people not actually wanting it then I think gex should too
Speaking of weird Easter Eggs. There's one if you have the "Moon Jump" cheat on and play the MuShuPork boss fight. Jump as high as you can and move left. You will land in a weird green room (It's been so long since I've played it) and some text will pop up on the screen saying "Gex is a pink bunny". Now beat the level and play the Godzilla boss level. You are in a pink bunny outfit. I never knew if it did anything to other levels, but I never heard anyone else mention it or what it means.
Here's hoping whoever now owns Crystal Dynamics decides to do actually make and release Gex Jr. which was supposed to be a follow-up to Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko with the plot being after saving Xtra from Rez and getting together with her Gex decides he's done with the hero/secret agent business and while binging TV in him and Xtra's mansion in Maui Hawaii for what seems like the 1000th+ time in a row a mysterious figure sucks him into the TV/Media Dimension however this time something happens to where Gex regresses in age to that of a kid body-wise but his mind, and personality don't regress in age and so once again he has to save the TV/Media Dimension in order to return home and normal. Or do a fixed-up remaster of the first game or if we're lucky a fixed-up remaster of the entire game.
"gex is a tv addict"
that..... that explains so fucking much! my boyfriend and i were watching a playthrough of gex enter the gecko, and we were wondering why gex was constantly quipping and making dated references. now i get it. he's the 90's/80's version of that kid that talks about nothing but anime.
I have Gex tattooed on me. I have a Gex plush, button (from Sega Saturn I think), and I have the novelization which I found in a thrift store. Blew my mind 😂
Thanks for making this, really enjoyed. It would be interesting to see how a modern Gex game would turn out, considering most of the references were dated even on release (I also played the UK version of Deep Cover Gecko, which I remember referenced Johnny Weissmuller, who'd been dead for 15 years even on release). It would be nice to think that a new Gex game would go down well considering the trend for 90's nostalgia, but I suppose that's wishful thinking.
And it's Leslie Phillips, no question.
Certainly a lot of media and references for Gex to draw from since the old games.
I was really looking for an informative video of gex and this one really hits the spot thanks

you say it would not age well with new time players because of the lack of nostalgia, But I was born in 2004 and this shit tickles that kind of nostalgia you have for a time you never lived in. It is kinda like 90s kids likeing 80s themed things I guess.
