Mrs Vaclab could have opened the valve on the hose's handle (if it does have a valve) as well as have lowered the canister's power when cleaning the dark blue rug in the bathroom.
Since owning energy efficient vacuums im watching this thinking you dont always need full blast on hardfloors medium would do the same trick and saves a lot of working hours on the motor
More airflow equals more or faster dirt pickup. Unless you know how much dirt is left behind, you wouldn't know exactly what power settings to use, so it's simpler to just run everything on high and hope for the best. No vacuum ever gets it all up in a few cycles under most circumstances.
