Streetlight IMO is kind of in a class of its own in ska. This song is one of their faster paced and among the hardest to follow he lyrics. Definitely dive deeper into their catalogue!

But none of those guys hold a candle to Streetlight in terms of raw talent or unique sound. Calling them “ska” is like calling Tool “metal”. Technically, it’s correct, but it’s really selling them short.

They’ll always be punks at heart. But some of it has such a different sound, that it doesn’t really even resonate as punk to me. And I think that’s great. The most defining feature of punk, to me, has always been that cry for a revolution. It’s more of a mindset than a genre, and they’ve nailed that mindset to a T. I love more typical-sounding punk bands, but what makes Streetlight special is that they don’t really sound like anything else. They touch on metal, classical, a myriad of European styles from different time periods ranging from Spanish to Eastern European to Medieval. Hell, the opening to The Hands that Thieve even has a traditional Scottish vibe to it. I wouldn’t be surprised if their next album (whenever that happens) starts to incorporate Eastern Asian influences into the mix. It’s just such a phenomenal conglomeration of cultural influences that it feels wrong to group them into any existing genre.

Few of their riffs are actually ska and they often have a difficult time trying to classify themselves in a single genre. Also, you mentions keasbey nights. Kalnoky, the lead singer for Streetlight, was the lead singer and writer of the Keasbey Nights catch 22 album and left the band shortly after.
I would consider them pioneers of ska, just because they are pushing the boundary of what ska can mean. They aren’t necessarily at the forefront of the mainstream ska sound, but they are at the forefront of what ska could be and how it can be played
I can't agree with you more gimpleg I was lucky enough to see catch 22 with kalnoky in Boston at the Axis and they were on Victory records wich was NOT a Ska label more hardcore and I also had much respect for Victory stretching outside their norm and putting out keasby nights because they realized how hard, fast,intense and amazingly talented they were that they didn't care if the hardcore/emo kids gave them shit for signing them and putting them on the compilation. Also streetlight is a melting pot of genres "and that's fine" they don't try to fit in they do what they love, music! @Gimpleg

The reason it’s so associated with punk is that the third wave of ska wave of ska (80’s-00’s) was mainly made up of a sub genre called ska punk which was most of America’s first introduction to ska. Reggae actually came from ska which removed much of the brass, slowed the tempo and changed to emphasis on the offbeat. Other ska bands to check out are the Skatalites (1st wave traditional Jamaican Ska), the specials (second wave English two tone), goldfinger (poster child of successful 3rd wave ska bands) and Operation Ivy (ska-core pioneers, plus one of the most influential bands in both ska and punk scenes).
Well, the punky ska was a long road away from jamaican ska. It evolved via the UK two tone movement which really didn't sound that much as jamaican ska either. But the roots were in Jamaica of course.

Streetlight is deffinitely a bit fast pased for beginners. He plays a lot of his songs slower paced with a more mellow feel under the name Toh Kay. He is also the Catch 22 guy, as well as the lead singer of Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution.

Bass and drums were great. They sound like a Ska master. 3.7. Many Ska bands draw inspiration from Oingo Boingo and Madness. I'll request "No One Lives Forever" by Oingo Boingo.
Loved the reaction. You should listen to any song on Arrogant sons of Bitches "Three Cheers for Disappointment" album. Also to be that guy Ska is older than reggae this is third wave ska(more punk) and Keasby nights is the album, song is 9mm and 3 piece suite (by catch-22)

this is an old video but when discussing big ska bands, you guys forgot quite possibly the biggest one (at least of the 90s) which is Sublime! Not personally a fan of them but they are undoubtedly the most successful band to come out of the 3rd Wave, them and the Bosstones
Mighty mighty bosstones, Suburban legends, Reel big fish, Goldfinger, Ska-P, The Valkyrians and The capital beat. There's a few good ones to check out.

I like it, but with conditions. It won't go on the regular playlist, but it will go on the Party Playlist. It has good party energy. It might mix well with alcohol, even though I don't. Had to give it up years ago. This could be my alcohol substitute.
You know there’s a specific dance for Ska Punk? If you like dancing to the song so much you should look at the dance. It works really well with practically every Ska song.
Ok a tour of Ska. Ska actually predated reggae in Jamaica. Look up the Skatalites as sort of indicative of first wave ska. The second wave started as a result of the cross-pollination if west indian and working class white culture in England in the 70s. There was indeed a lot of punk influence, and that went both ways. The Clash were big fans of Ska and their bassist, a white dude from brixton, actually grew up playing in bands with his west indian friends. But the standout second wave bands are groups like The Specials, Madness, and The English Beat (the first album. The second album got into new wave...that happened a lot actually). Third wave is in the USA and contrary to what a lot of ppl said in the comments Catch 22 (founded by the same guy who founded Streetlight Manifesto, though he quit after one album) does have a claim to being a major part of the start of the third wave. That said, bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, OpIvy and Fishbone were definitely earlier and more experimental. In the third wave the influence of punk becomes much more explicit and they even bring in heavy metal. Operation Ivy was very unique in that they never really had a brass section, but also really couldn't be called anything other than a ska band. They broke up after one album and several members started Rancid, which was much more of a punk band but with very clear ska influences. Believe it or not, No Doubt's first album or so were very ska. But Reel Big Fish are much more indicative of West Coast ska. Sublime were a bunch of wannabes.
Catch 22 and streetlight are basically the same band, same singer and a few other members are in both. But check out Less Than Jake, The Slackers, Upstanding Youth, And The Mad Caddies

Streetlight Manifesto is one of my favorite bands, but "pioneers of the ska genre" is way off. They're a late 3rd wave ska band. First wave ska developed in Jamaica in the late 50s/early 60s as a precursor to reggae. 2nd wave ska (two-tone) was popular in the Caribbean diaspora in the 70s-80s, and third wave developed in the late 80s and into the 90s, fusing traditional ska styles with punk. So SM represents a fun evolution of a long long history of ska.

I wouldn't call Streetlight pioneers of ska, but they are my favorite band ever.
Streetlight are amazing! Another song I'd recommend is Red Rubber Ball. If y'all didn't know, the singer also has two other bands, BOTAR and ToKal.
They are absolutely awesome live! Their stage presence gets me everytime.
