Can't lie, I do have often some isoprop on hand, and a lighter, so I do some wooshes (with sturdy PLASTIC bottles). But all this tiktok bs is sooo frustrating. Now we show kids like faked results of potentially dangerous experiments without providing them with all necessary science, precautions etc. yaay.

@topapo3661 Gallium is incredibly expensive, there are lower-melting-point alloys out there, like Wood's metal, but they often contain toxic metals like cadmium and lead. If you use actual petrobond sand there's no risk of a steam explosion unless you actually add water to the sand, though I have no idea why you'd do that.

Being intimately familiar with the hazards can, under the right circumstances, allow experts to "break" safety rules, as those safety rules include a lot of margin to account for error, mistakes and environmental variables. That's not too say you should routinely break safety rules because you think you know what you're doing, but more that a person who is breaking those rules *can* be a pretty good educator about why they exist (see ElectroBOOM for a more long-standing example, he deliberately recreates electrical hazards in a safe, controlled and dramatised manner to showcase why safe practices are important).

2:59 as somebody who spent a summer of their childhood trying to intentionally get the whoosh rocket to it explosive air fuel mixture. It's a lot harder to do intentionally than you'd think. That is probably makes this even more dangerous because it'll probably be okay almost all the times you do it. If for some reason you're not going to heed the advice and do this. I recommend a piezoelectric grill lighter, some nails, a good run of speaker wire and some sand. (Oh I almost forgot and IR thermometer, for things you're planning on touching) Me as a child learned, You don't play with fire without safety precautions and preferably a fire extinguisher or 2. Yeah I didn't learn the expected lesson of not playing with fire. I just learned that if you engineer it properly and understand the science you can do it without hurting yourself. That 'sand', is more of a clay. I do jewelry and that looks exactly like the shade of Casting Clay I use for making temporary castings. It is kind of a mix of sand and clay that compacts for molds, but is heat resistant enough to not burn, melt, or harden when you apply molten metal. It's the same thing Tony used in the first Ironman when he was in the cave and casting the ring for his arc-reactor. I personally order it from Rio Grande where I get most of my jewelry supplies. I've never really looked anywhere else for it.
The difference between my childhood and the current generation of kids' childhood: When _we_ watched videos of dangerous experiments where stuff went boom, it was done by trained professionals with all the safety equipment and the good old catchphrase "Don't try this at home!" Mythbusters was one of the best shows ever for getting folks excited about science. It's a shame so many people are trying to follow suit but _without_ all the knowledge and training and precautions they went through to keep things safe! I mean even just something as simple as always erecting a blast shield, something so few UA-camrs and TikTokers do. These apps _need_ safety to be added to their Terms of Service so people doing dangerous experiments without the proper precautions and/or safety warnings will have their videos taken down or at the very least flagged as not following correct safety procedures!

The difference between my childhood and the current generation of kids' childhood: When _we_ watched videos of dangerous experiments where stuff went boom, it was done by trained professionals with all the safety equipment and the good old catchphrase "Don't try this at home!"
Mythbusters was one of the best shows ever for getting folks excited about science. It's a shame so many people are trying to follow suit but _without_ all the knowledge and training and precautions they went through to keep things safe! I mean even just something as simple as always erecting a blast shield, something so few UA-camrs and TikTokers do. These apps _need_ safety to be added to their Terms of Service so people doing dangerous experiments without the proper precautions and/or safety warnings will have their videos taken down or at the very least flagged as not following correct safety procedures!
