I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains. Cut a few paths to a water source in my days. You can see the fires burning in the night. Sheriff would drive up in town and just say "The mountains on fire tonight." give a head nod to us with a "gentleman" as he pulled off. And everyone knows even the police, you better not go on that land uninvited. I was taught that you never mess with a man's copper unless you're prepared to go down copperhead road. The meaning implies the copper around the lead of the bullets. Good folks, but they don't play around. P.S don't be a government person trying to talk to them, there's a reason they stopped sending the census man around.
Reminds me of the movie "Lawless", set in depression era, Franklin County Virginia, with brothers running a moonshine operation. Tom Hardy and other good actors made for a very good movie.
My greatgrandaddy who passed before me was know pretty much as the town drunk, Western NC, close to TN. Caught up in moonshine bad, physically abusive to his wife, that whole mess. My Grandfather grew up humble and poor, never talked about his upbringing.. when i was older, relatives talked about how my great grandaddy one night was coming through the woods and saw Satan who said, "I'm comin' for ya". The next day, obviously everybody thought he was drunk or crazy but whatever he saw, it sobered him up in the early 1930s, never drank or hurt his wife again. This song reminds me of that and the Vietnam part stings. ❤❤❤
Love the song first time hearing it! When I was young my Grandpa blew out the back of the Garage it was said that he was making moonshine! I can remember drinking something that he made from dandelions it was delicious and I can remember my Grandma would say to my Grandpa (Lester) do not be giving Judith Ann anymore of that Wine! Miss them both so much! ♥️♥️
that was dandilyon wine, I used to drink that stuff when I was 19, made my own many years later, great stuff!! Its a sweet wine but really messes you up.
How can you not love this song! Steve Earle makes you feel it in a big way! Iconic lyrics and that dog passing in front of Steve in the last scene is a certain kind of wonderful!
The lyrics tell a great true story of one man going through hardship and made a very good music with it. One of the most sung song for western dances in America. My respect that he served America so we enjoy what freedoms we have. I will always enjoy this great song for some of us also overcame circumstances we had to face through out our lives.
Love the pipes intro. And recommend listen to this song with the lyrics. Very cool. When granddaddy comin round again lol. Copper head Rd yall Stuff happens.

Yes... Feeling family vibes from this song. Sounds cliche, but genuinely sorry for your loss. Music is so bittersweet.

That's because they respect women. But a man better not try sneaking around on their property.

Klannity Tim, can you tell me how serving in the military saved our freedoms? War is for the rich to profit and the poor man dies, nothing else.
